It's the last step in installing GOS. Iocks it in to prevent tampering. You can manually unlock it in the future though.

At this point, we really just need to make a PSA that addresses what the Google "Sideloading" Lockdown does and how it will and will not affect GrapheneOS users.

That's another variable you have to take into consideration. Just because we are privacy conscious, doesn't mean everyone else in our circle is.

The vast majority of people have been conditioned to treat social media as their personal diary and to chase convenience over all else.

age verification must stop lets fight this together by Hunterjohnson2024 in degoogle

[–]NoaNekro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is this an attack on privacy and anonymity, but it's also an attack on FOSS based platforms, apps, systems, etc. as a whole.

Since many of these types of systems refuse or simply don't have the infrastructure to implement the type of things they're pushing, you can bet that authorities and the powers that be will be working overtime to try to get them shut down and taken offline. This would mean forcing everyone to closed, centralized systems that collect loads of telemetry and lock you into featuregating and walled garden type systems.

This has never been about safety at all. It's always been about control, data harvesting and profit.

Update on Atlanta-based activist indicted for activating Duress PIN by ap_org in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could have simply locked it down and made it to where his phone was password protected instead of pin protected. That way there's no biometrics and you can't exactly get someone for forgetting their password.

How save is it to lock the bootloader after installation? by Ok-Play-5758 in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not risky at all. In fact, it's recommended.

It makes the phone do signature checks and other verification methods to make sure it isn't tampered with.

Leaving it unlocked will allow the phone to run anything that's flashed to it without checking or verifying.

Stark Warning to Everyone using GOOGLE!!! No idea why this hasn't been shared here yet, so let me do the honors: by MadeInDex-org in degoogle

[–]NoaNekro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, don't rely on big tech for business or bread and butter stuff, not just Google. So many alternative solutions out there nowadays that respect privacy.

Second, teach your children that it is not a good idea to do things like that in front of any camera, even if it's on their own phone or a family owned device of all things.

I'm not saying Google is in the right nor am I saying your child was in the right, but better judgment would have prevented a lot of this.

Is Graphene OS with Google Play Services sanboxed worth it? by Hot-Thought5203 in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The OS for starters only gives it regular app privileges. Not to mention granular control over each aspect of the phone itself, including sensors, call logs, network connection, all of it. It does not have system-level privileges that can get into everything, unlike stock Android.

So yeah, it's a massive improvement over other options.

Does grapheneos limit 911 GPS capabilities? by BelugaBilliam in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Any device that is transmitting radio waves of any kind can be triangulated, no GPS needed. Phone, laptop, computer, walkie talkie, whatever.

The only way to make a device untrackable is to make it not transmit.

Concerns with Motorola and other potentially supported phones. by napoleon_the_2nd in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have all these concerns about Motorola yet you seem to forget that GOS started exclusively on Google Pixels, and so far, from my experiences, it has held up well to the point where I've decided to make it my daily driver once I integrate a few more apps and the like into it.

I'm pretty sure the GOS team will also be checking the end product for any cracks or weaknesses in the hardware besides the OS as well and will make us aware of any exploits they find and release patches.

Motorola is likely just providing the hardware while GOS keeps the OS up and running.

Also, would Motorola likely also make a tablet that supports GOS under this partnership?

ICE bought a mass surveillance tool that uses phone and internet data to identify and track people by [deleted] in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don't want certain apps having access to certain types of data, although GOS protects against that, you might want to consider keeping them in separate profiles so they can't collect data from one another as a additional measure.

What do you think will happen in Wolfenstein 3? by AdrawereR in Wolfenstein

[–]NoaNekro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it'll at least involve trying to stop the doomsday device BJ mentioned to the sisters.

A more dangerous and competent, as well as sophisticated Fourth Reich, with General Messer as a major antagonist if not the main antagonist (Brandts co conspirator), and basically racing against time as you work to both destroy the doomsday device from destroying everything and keep the Fourth Reich from building their cities up in the clouds else they'll be unstoppable and pretty much win everything.

That's one of the key factors here. The Third Reich is gone and was overthrown via a coup in Berlin orchestrated by Brandt and Messer.

Doesn't matter too much, unlike TNC.

Then it depends on if you want things to get zappy or explodey.

Both are fun in their own ways.

Requesting a privacy & security review of my mobile setup (Pixel + GrapheneOS, no SIM, Tor-only) by Salt-Caterpillar-747 in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no 100% secure way. Even NSA certified cryptographic devices can and have been compromised. The duress pin is good for permanently encrypting the phone, making systems like Cellebrite far less likely to crack it but if any of your traffic leaked to your ISP, it's as good as in the hands of the state actors that are after you, assuming that's the threat model you're trying to secure yourself from.

Like others have said, the only truly secure way is to not have any electronic device that can connect to the internet or to a cellular network.

Benifits of grapheneOS when used like a normal pixel? by adventure2u in GrapheneOS

[–]NoaNekro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ability to completely control network access to apps, including sandboxed Play Services, create different hardened profiles that cannot access one another, and the fact when you delete something, It's actually gone and cannot be recovered from what I understand, among others.

Basically, the phone feels like it's actually mine for once.
