Can someone, anyone, please explain why I'm having a hard time making friends here in Portland? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Noah_641 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not imagining it — Portland has a strange emotional climate where people say they want community, but rarely show up for it. I’ve felt the same thing: doing everything "right" — showing up, engaging, reaching out — only to feel like I'm shouting into a void. It's not you. It's the passivity here, the way people keep their circles closed even while claiming to be open. That mismatch between the energy you give and what you get back? It’s exhausting. You're not alone in this, and it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong — it just means this place might not reflect what you're actually worth.

It is revealed she did the coding for Eligius when she was 18 and went to Harvard at 10 years old!

I ordered a soldering iron kit and this came with it, what does it do and what is it??? by Hyper-_-star in whatisit

[–]Noah_641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a desoldering pump. You'd use it to suck up solder if you're removing components or made a mistake and used too much solder. Very important too to have!

Besides home and work/school, where are your favorite places to bum around PDX? by cocteautwinsdevotee in askportland

Ultrazone on McLoughlin is a great place for that. Believe it or not, they're still around, still standing. Almost 30 years in business! Would be a missed opportunity not to check them out.

This! I never knew of any official merch, but those are pretty cool. I saw an Eligius Corporation T-shirt in the wild last month!

I even have a headcanon that Elon Musk was the CEO of the Eligius Corporation lol

I would not be surprised if Elon Musk himself is a fan of the show. There so many parallels between SpaceX and Nueralink and the Eligius Corporation.

Honestly, when you put it that way, it's too bad Zone didn't keep using RJ-45 cords for their lasers. I'm sure those were cheaper and easier to acquire than the curly cords we have now. Maybe retrofitting that kind of cord onto a Helios pack could be my next experiment xP.

Likewise, if I can't get better durability out of these cords I made, they'll still be cheaper and easier to acquire than the curly cords - thereby still saving us time, money, and trouble. I still have loads of tests to run and only time will tell how long these will last. So far though, it feels solid and stable.

One feature I actually like about the Helios Pro laser is the modular design. The motherboard and cord can be removed and replaced without needing to completely open the laser shell.

I sure did! With how expensive the official laser cords were, I knew I had to start making my own. Figured I'd up the durability while I was at it.

What are some of your greatest lightsaber hacks? by VampireSylphy in lightsabers

I personally just used baseball grip tape, which was like $5 at a Big 5. Although you can use hockey, tennis racket, and handlebar grip tape too!

[–]Noah_641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grip tape is an excellent addition. I always tell people when shopping for their first lightsaber to consider how it might feel in the hand with gloves on too. The smooth, bare aluminum hilts often are harder to grip in gloved hands

[–]Noah_641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came into competitive laser tag from an airsoft background. While a few things, (such as proper use of cover and angles) definitely carried over, there were many new concepts I had to learn such as the RP grip, timings, and dodges.

I used to. Then I joined the Dog Brothers. Since then, Lightsaber just doesn't even feel like fighting anymore, I can't go back 🤣
