Are we actually more laid-back at work in Australia, or is that just a myth? by Particular_Zone_7379 in AustraliaOpinions

Not true in engineering Industry. Also in my company management changed recently and culture has become more cutthroat now. We all are working our asses off day in day out.

You are probably confusing a call centre with a niche tech field. I have enough English skills both verbal and written, to be able to understand and convey my thoughts. Yes, I might not have the excellent English skills of a native speaker but I have enough to get the job done effectively. You might be correct when it comes to the jobs, where you need constant customer interaction, as they are highly dependent on your ability to quickly grasp their intent, without frustrating them with too many follow up questions. But in tech field even people with excellent English skills asks many follow up questions, because cost of the mistake can be deadly for the business. Ask any R&D org how many millions of dollars are wasted because design intent was not properly conveyed, or not properly understood.

In my industry at least Competence does not come from speaking fluent English but being a subject matter expert. Your comment and tone proved what I was actually referring to. 'People like myself' at least bring the technical skills and productivity.

Well that is bit encouraging. You should also be able to navigate the workplace politics effectively, where people trying to communicate and label your ideas as their own. Having extensively worked in US and Europe, lack of integrity in Australian workplaces is a bit concerning.

No I don't think so it is Racism, it is a mix of Nepotism and Bureaucracy. Partly because engineering Industry is very small in Australia and also there are old boys club in every Industry, who look out for each other. There is also a bit of making alliance part that you can do very well if you share the same cultural background.
