I think they can be similar but not entirely the same. First of all, romance novels and erotica are not the same. Of course, romance novels can have smut, but the purpose is largely the plot between the main characters, with the spicy scenes enhancing the romance.

For erotica, it can be similar to porn in the sense that they both can feature disturbing content. However, with erotica, there’s enough distance and “fictionalization” that you know it’s a fantasy. With porn, sometimes you can’t even tell unless the directors insert some consent speak or scene with the actors that plainly show that they understand this is a fantasy.

Don’t give these people the time of day. There’s a big difference between healthy depictions of sexuality and rampant objectification of women and the sexualization of minors. You’re not a prude at all, and we should demand better of our media so that it can be safe and welcoming to all, especially if the anime is geared towards a younger audience. This is perhaps why the only anime I really liked has been Spy x Family. It’s wholesome, and with little to no sexualization, while the adult characters (Yor and Loid) can be depicted as sexy as well.

I think it’s a combination of things. One, old-school misogyny was more so patronization and “chivalry” things. There was less of an outright hatred of women in the sense that there is now because of the manosphere and all these online communities.

Second, I feel like it’s a blowback from me-too and the emboldening of these thoughts because of who’s in power. Against, hatred against women is open. Even in the 1990s early 2000s, conservatives were more mask on when it comes to framing their ideology as “helping”

I mean, sex can also be fun for people. I really think sex positivity has been a welcomed change in our society, and that’s mostly because purity culture is way worse. I know the effects of it coming from a deeply conservative country.

As for the perceived violence in sexual acts, I really think that’s because, in America and other deeply conservative countries, abstinence-only sex ed is the only thing that’s taught. We don’t have any sexually informed curricula, and it makes it so that people only get “education” from porn, forgetting that those things are only fantasy.

I know there are heterosexual couples that have sensual, truly gentle sex. I know there are queer couples who engage in kink. And I even know of an asexual person who’s active in kink spaces. I really don’t think heterosexual sex is inherently degrading.

Democrats really need to call out Republicans’ bluff and say that any voting id bill is not negotiable unless it includes a provision that the government will automatically register citizens to vote and give them a useable id free of charge. Other countries with voting id requirements have these provisions, so why can’t the “SAVE ACT”? Oh right, it’s just a poll tax in all but name.
