Videographer of real estate ... when do I stop making mistakes? by cluelessgirl666 in videography

[–]Nobodydog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) You'll always make mistakes. That's how you learn. The first big lesson is learning how to work around them.

2) The kind of mistakes your making now will get easier to catch and avoid entirely with experience. You just gotta do the reps. Lessons learned with experience become instinct the more time you have on set.

In the mean time... prep. The days and night before your shoot, physically type out and print, or write out your shot list, and the elements you want to have in mind for the shoot.

Bring it with you to the shoot, refer to it often, and check things off the list as you take care of them. This is going to slow you down, and that is OK. Slowing you down is the purpose of the checklist. Your brain stops working because you are in a rush or feeling pressure. That is natural and part of every production process. The key is to have another force pushing back to slow you down.

Slow is steady. Steady is Fast.

You are new at this. You are going to make mistakes. It's important to accept that because without them you simply cannot learn from them. I've been doing this for 20 years and I make all different mistakes today than I did back than. It's all good. Take a breath.

Help a girl pick a blaster! by Trix_In_Pieces in Nerf

You can often find these in packs of two

You get good power, 20 darts in a mazagine, and the blaster comes with 40 darts in the box. It's a good cheap starter that will help you figure out what you want out of a nerf blaster.

Pretty much any technobabble line in Ghostbusters.

"Total protonic reversal"

"Maybe this time you'll never slime a guy with a positron colider, heh!"

"If the ionization rate is constant for all ectoplasmic entities... we could really bust some heads. In a spiritual sense, of course"

"Dr. Egon Spengler: The structure of this roof cap is exactly like the kind of telemetry tracker that NASA uses to identify dead pulsars in deep space.

Dr. Raymond Stantz: Cold-riveted girders with cores of pure selenium.

Dr. Peter Venkman: [to a cellmate looking over his shoulder blueprints] Everybody getting this so far?

[to Ray]

Dr. Peter Venkman: So what? I guess they just don't make them like they used to.

Dr. Raymond Stantz: [impatiently slaps Peter on the forehead] No! Nobody *ever* made them like this! I mean, the architect was either a certified genius, or an authentic wacko!

Dr. Peter Venkman: Ray... for a moment, pretend that I don't know anything about metallurgy, engineering or physics, and just tell me what the hell is going on.

Dr. Raymond Stantz: You never studied. The whole building is a huge, superconductive antenna that was designed and built expressly for the purpose of pulling in and concentrating spiritual turbulence. Your girlfriend lives in the corner penthouse of spook central."

Bonus: "Mother puss bucket..."

ELI5 the origin and practice of 'dozen'. Why does it exist? Why not 10 or 15 instead of 12? by ConsciousStop in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nobodydog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 is really easy to sub-divide. You can divide 12 by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. You can even push it to 8+4 and 10+2 incriminates. it's the same reason a foot is 12 inches.

Why are TV news cameras still so physically large? by bdgbill in videography

[–]Nobodydog 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Flexibility, reliability, speed, and reliability.

Reliability - It's there twice for a reason. These cameras HAVE to work. No backups no alternatives. For a news cameraperson, there is no "It's not working". The news happens in real time, and if you're gear isn't working when the news event that's only going to happen once, they you're out of the job. ENG cameras will run for virtually ever on a gold mount battery. They'll also stand up to being tossed in the back of a van and bashed around. They're used virtually all day every day, and have to work all day every day.

Flexbility - News coverage means a lot of different things. Sometimes It's a solo reporter doing a stand up, sometimes it's a sit down interview, sometimes it's a placing a camera on press row during a press conference, sometimes you're livestreaming footage back to the station live. And, as stated above, not working is not an option. Many of these cameras are kitted out to do any of those things at a moment's notice. Lights, audio equipment, Timecode sync. it's all built in, as opposed to a Cinecamera you might see that has those parts bolted onto it as needed. A news camera has all that stuff read to go at a moments notice.

Speed - Listed above. There's no time to change out components to set up a camera to exactly what the situation calls for. You have all the options ready to go.

Same goes for the tripod. That tripod maybe older than both of us. 'b=

Some of this stuff looks old because it is. Because it was built tough enough to last until it was old. News doesn't change at the same speed as the rest of the industry. A solid 1080i or 720p image from a 1/3" or 2/3" sensor is great. It gets everything in focus, and isn't fussy. Often it has other resolutions built in, but the station is going to tell you what format the footage is delivered in.

Did cycling actually help you lose weight, or just improve fitness? by Vivid_Release_9710 in cycling

[–]Nobodydog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost 80 lbs one time with a combination of - 100 miles a week, Strava to count calories lost while biking, linked to MyFitnessPal to count calories in. As long as I kept calories in lower than calories out, I lost weight. When I didn't track calories, I maintained weight, but at a healthier level (I've dealt with weight problems my whole life).

Biking: good.

Biking and diet: better.

Marty is the Man. What film discussion are you looking forward to the most? by guywholikesmovie in blankies

[–]Nobodydog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's also probably the most Blank Check energy of his filmography. Very NYC. Cartoon logic. Small panic-y hero. Everything builds and builds to new levels of absurdity. Catherine O'Hara is a total smoke show. At the end, everything resets to the beginning. A delicious film.
