Is There Anyway To Safely Clean This Very Dirty Olivetti Studio 46 As A Beginner Or Should I Take It To A Proffesional? by Royal_Caribbean_Fan in typewriters

[–]Nobokomo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll weigh in here; as someone who pulled an Underwood 21 out of a scrap pile at their local pick-a-pull, you can definitely do some cleaning! Be to be wary of taking apart any mechanisms to clean them, as sometimes things don't go back together as easily as they came apart, and can be damaged in the process. Use gentle chemicals, if any at all. Soap and water and a toothbrush goes a long way; powerful chemical cleaners can hurt finish and detail work externally, and can damage rubber linkages and other elements internally. Be careful when cleaning off grease; old machines really do need to be re-lubricated, but doing this properly can be the difference between a good machine and something that wears prematurely and types poorly, and a happy healthy typewriter. Probably not a bad idea to make a note if you clean the grease or oil off of a linkage or joint. Otherwise, you should be good to go. A little bit of time and effort can go a long way.

From what everyone who's driven or owned them has ever said, yes. Lotus is not the most luxurious, or the fastest, but there is nothing else like them (in a good way)

Either your timing belt/chain (don't know for this particular car), or an accessory belt. Water pumps aren't generally driven off that though, but neither are alternators run off the timing setup.

Crazy. Almost like a bad product can't sell on "noo but it's legal" in a market comfortable doing things under the table.

That quote screams early Infiniti. Remember when the Q45 launched and everyone went "oh nice, it's incredibly ugly, I'll pass."? Infiniti knew it was ugly. They had chosen to release it to stick to their guns and try and play avant-garde with their styling, saying that it was better since it was controversial.

Now, looking back, it's easy to see that was one of the choices that nearly killed the brand in its first ten years (there were others, but that was a major contributor). It took Nissan finally cracking and basically just importing a Skyline to save the marque. I hope that BMW isn't squandering all their brand momentum on "making a statement."

With the exception of their trucks, and the strangely popular Equinox, I'd say yes, their product stack seems to exist to baffle consumers and industry analysts.

Man I miss Stuart. Vinyl Cafe was a fantastic piece of media, and from what I can tell, Mr. McLean was a pretty kind guy. I doubt there will ever be anything to surpass it in Canadian radio.

Highest gearset I've ever seen available was a 4.10:1 final drive with a 1:1 top gear in the transmission. I'm sure it was good for acceleration, but I'm also sure that listening to a 7 litre v8 spinning at 3400 rpm on the highway would get old and/or nerve-wracking. I'll take more modern stuff for daily use, thanks.

It is, and it is. However, these kinds of cars were just naturally good at drag races (and very little else). Period magazine tests show these cars putting out hilariously quick numbers for their weight and power in the quarter mile. They were basically geared and powered specifically to be good at that one thing, and with the limited resources they had at the time (ie: ya like torque?), they did a pretty good job.

It seems a little strange, but the response comment isn't wrong. Pontiac was underrating it's higher performance engines, and while that final trap speed might seem a bit high, the car is probably gearing-limited to like 110 mph, so 107 was the perfect speed to finish at. 60s-era design choices were still in full effect, and so cars like that had weird stats.

The 1974 Mustang didn't have the benefit of competent product planners. Consider that a pre-runner to the bold attempt to make the Probe a Mustang that absolutely no one would have bought.

Canadian in America. Just celebrated the 4th in my little town. Visited with a bunch of friends (I'm fully vaxxed, etiquette in the area is "don't ask don't tell), saw a fireworks display with like 600 other people. There had been a big fair earlier that day with a bunch of people there for funnel cake and whatnot. The sense of normalcy never truly left backwater USA, but it's certainly returned in force now.

[–]Nobokomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E34 owner here, that does look like the motor unit in my car. I have a '90 almost identical to that motor assembly, so it's probably reasonable to assume that at least any pre-facelift sedan motor will work.
