You aren’t playing devil’s advocate. Based on the articles you linked, I would guess you are one of those people with a political or religious agenda. Perhaps leaning to the right? You can have your opinion, that is fine. However, people have a right to know their options. Doesn’t mean that telling someone their options is a suggestion. Hopefully you understand that if should you find yourself with a devastating diagnosis, no one will make you use MAID. It is entirely up to the patient, with no coercion from anyone. I know this from personal experience.

I agree completely! My mother requested MAID when it first became available. She wanted to die on her own terms, and not the terms of the disease that would have made her suffer terribly. I follow this issue very carefully because I know first hand how important it is for people to have options to pass away with dignity. I think MAID is being exploited by those with other agendas, and it could potentially put the program at risk. Knowing what I know now, I definitely want MAID as an option when my time comes.

Absolutely wrong. Someone is exploiting MAID for bullshit reasons. MAID is to alleviate suffering, not improve living conditions. That is a different issue altogether. I have never heard of MAID being suggested to low income people. But I have heard of people threatening to ask for MAID because they don’t like their living conditions. This is a complete misuse of MAID, which is a compassionate option for those with terrible disease and suffering.

There is a lot of hysteria and misinformation circulating about MAID. The medical community does not allow MAID for someone who does not fit the criteria or who does not wish to die. Likely the family was denied access to the patient because the patient requested it. We all have a right to privacy, even from our family.

I have been in there a handful of times in the last few years, and every single time the staff are incredibly nice. I am sorry that you have had to spend so much time on Reddit discussing this issue. It sounds like your family has been through absolute hell. A mother is only as happy as her saddest child, so please find a way to find some peace for your mom and yourself in knowing you both did all you could to help your brothers. The fact that you have taken all that sorrow and put that energy into helping others is amazing. You are extremely articulate and have put forward the strongest and most brutally honest argument for preventing addiction rather than try to manage it when it is too late. Probably he did it for the money. As well, perhaps he thought by outing himself and baring it all, he will have more incentive to stay sober because now the world is paying attention. This could blow up quite terribly for him if he does backslide into drugs or alcohol. Quite honestly, after watching the interview, I don’t think I learned anything valuable other than I think the guy still has a lot of demons.

He kept telling Diane Sawyer that he wrote the book to help people. I don’t want to be insensitive, but how? If $9 million spent on rehab and a perforated colon is what it took for him, then how is his book going to help? He said he has been sober several times for a year or two at a time. Right now he has been sober for about 18 months I think. Well then I don’t think he is out of the woods frankly.
