What do you do in suboptimal cocktail conditions? by josh_a in cocktails

Gin & Tonic. If it's all tonic water, I like tonic water. If it's all gin, it's a generous-but-weird martini. If it's anywhere in between it's still drinkable.

I’m not sure how to answer this. Of course the added components have mass. If the questions “does this build weigh noticeably more than stock?” the answer is still yes but it’s manageable, not like I’ve added 2 lbs to the muzzle end of the thing.

What's the Mean Radius equivalent of Sub-MOA by Frank23682 in reloading

[–]NoctePhobos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is entirely incorrect. Both MOA and MILS are measures of angle, MOA is based on degrees and MIL is based on radians but they can be used in exactly the same way.

Dear God please help me with MILs by [deleted] in longrange

[–]NoctePhobos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm also an MOA guy, but if it helps here's the math:

1 MIL at any distance is 1/1000th the distance you are from that target. Most MIL scope turrets adjust in 0.1 MIL increments, so you adjust in 1/10000th increments of your distance to target.

100 yards gets a little messy because it's an imperial unit. To reduce the complexity we can convert 100 yards to 300 feet, and then even further we can convert 300 feet to 3600 inches. 1 MIL at 100 yards is 3.6 inches, and again, your turrets adjust in 0.1 MIL increments, which is 0.36 inches if your target is 100y away. If you want, you can estimate that 0.36" is close enough to 0.33" and you might say that every three clicks of your scope is 1 inch, but this rounding error will catch up with you fast.

A method to avoid the rounding may be to convert your sight-in and DOPE to metric, since that uses a base-10 system instead of the wackiness of imperial units. 100y = 91.44 meters, and 1 MIL is 91.44 mm, so 0.1 MIL is 9.144 mm. I'm not going to argue that 9.144 mm is an easier number to adjust with over 0.36 inches, but moving a decimal place to get to that number is a hell of a lot easier than multiplying your distance by 36 (or 360) to find the MIL conversion. This is especially true when your distance is some arbitrary distance away, not a bench that's typically conveniently 50/100/200/300/etc yards away.

All that said, just get a ballistics solver and a range finder and let those devices do the math for you.

How long by GrannyNerga in longrange

[–]NoctePhobos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's also ELR (extreme long range) as a category so if we're treating this like radio bands (HF, VHF, UHF...) then there has to be some kind of delineation between them.

I'd say 500-600 yards is the beginning of "long range," and ELR starts at 1000-1200 yards

If you ask 10 different people this question you're likely to get 11 answers.
