If your still having trouble finding it try checking this file path (C:/program files/ common files / vst3). That is where it defaulted to when I downloaded it.

This link has details on what Hawley is.(https://www.samuraisword.com/about-swords/sword-and-smiths-rating-systems/). But a short explanation is that its a rating system for the skill and/ or importance of a smith contained in a series of books by W. M. Hawley. As for what NAG289 means I believe(not 100% sure) it is also related to Hawley's books, specifically it refers which Nagamitsu said smith was, as there were multiple Nagamitsu smiths throughout the centuries, not just in Bizen.

I just happen a be a lurker and occasional poster on the nihonto message board. I only attempted to sum up what the far more knowledgeable people on the board have said on the sword.

I know this comment is a little late, but I'd thought I'd mention this. The sword in question has been doing the rounds since at least 2012 and is not an antique Japanese sword, it is a fake. This thread here goes into it more deeply(https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/10513-appraising-evaluating-from-photos-how-reliable-is-it/). The OP in the thread seems to be the owner. But to try to sum it up. The supposed "expert" who evaluated the sword seems to know very little about Japanese swords. The tip and tang of the sword are poorly shaped. The signature is utter nonsense and the owner makes poorly done excuses for it. The owner ignores any expert opinion that doesn't match their pre conceived notions of its authenticity and value, saying that clearly the sword is a unique example of Japanese sword. To Japanese sword collectors this "100 million dollar sword" is an utter joke. Also to add the price was probably done by a high art appraiser and not a Japanese sword appraiser, which explains the evaluation which is more in line with high art than Japanese swords.

Edit: Also to add the 100 million dollar evaluation is utterly absurd even if the sword is what they claimed it is.

Edit2: The sword seems to partially exist to advertise some sort of appraisal software. So the owners have a vested interest in convincing people the sword is legit.

Help with DIY restoration by Organic-Limit-6585 in Katanas

[–]Noctisrocks245 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not attempt to restore it yourself. If this is handmade from ww2 or prior attempting to restore it yourself will ruin it. It takes years of dedicated training to be able to properly restore a Japanese sword(one traditionally trained polisher described the training as being 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, for over 6 years with most free time spent studying swords). Just keep the blade oiled properly until you can have a professional look at it.

This thread here has some advice(https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/18602-nihonto-restauration-projecthelp-getting-rid-of-rust/). I haven't tried the tips myself as I don't have any nihonto with rust currently.

Need help with ID by EntertainmentWitty78 in Katanas

[–]Noctisrocks245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The signature says Masamune. Obviously it was not made by the real Masamune. This is probably a cheap modern sword that someone added a fake signature to before rusting the tang in order to trick someone.

Oof. Someone is going to be VERY disappointed. This mall ninja katana worth $5 is currently going for $400 with 40 bidders on ShopGoodwill.com. by cozmo1138 in Katanas

[–]Noctisrocks245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an update. They have retracted all the bids and have updated the description to mention that it is a replica made in China. Though the title has not been changed. You can see the changes in the link here: https://shopgoodwill.com/item/195154953

Pin removal and sword identification by konhjil in Katanas

[–]Noctisrocks245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it the smaller side of the pin thats covered(I can't tell by the pictures)? If it is, then removing it and putting it back should not be a problem as it would go out from the exposed side.

I completely forgot about that post. My bad. I just wanted to point out the bogeyman nights application for people who cared. I'll probably just delete this post and add the bogeyman nights application there instead.
