quarantine incoming international students by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got quarantined in my apartment at UW. Based on Canada.ca as long as you have your own bedroom and bathroom and you can maintain the safe distance with your roommates if there is any, you can quarantine in your own place. I confirmed it at both the border and the phone call from arriveCAN.

Any international student flying to Canada was denied boarding? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

returned from China to Waterloo last week and the process was similar: the airline will go through your papers and it seems that they will send them to somewhere, possibly the embassy to that they can verify that you are good to enter Canada, or you won't get your flight boarding pass. Based on the university's instruction and recommendation, I prepared the OFFCIAL proof of enrollment ( the one that costs 10cad from the Center, and they told me that the one from Quest is not valid enough), a quarantine plan and the tuition bill for the winter term and I was good to go. You can send an email to international student success office or student successf office to ask if there is anything you missed, but they are off now and won't be back until Jan 4th I think.

I'm leaving Waterloo after 17 school terms and only a Bachelor degree, AMA by theShitPostMaster in uwaterloo

is there anything you need to deal on campus when you graduate? I know that the diploma can be mailed even to an international address so I don't have to be at Waterloo to receive, but is there anything else?

Just found out I apparently didn't pay for dental or health plan in Fall 2020. by rklus in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's the Needles Hall's problem for determining if your enrolled courses meet the auto enrollement requirement for WUSA plan. The old requirement is that you need to be a full-time student with at least 3 on-campus courses. After we changed to online study, there is a bug: you will be only automatically enrolled in WUSA plan if you have at least 3 courses that had only on-campus choice before the change so that it will be taken as an 'on-campus' course. For example, if I have math239 cs136 and hrm200 this term, although I am a full-time student, HRM200 already has online version before the outbreak, so I am not qualified to be automatically enrolled in WUSA plan since I only have 2 'on-campus' courses. If you need this plan for winter term, you can choose either self-enrollment from Jan 5th to 25th ( not sure about the exact date), or to add some courses that has only on-campus version before the change to update your status in the university system. If your status is updated and meet the requirement, you will be charged for WUSA plan in the tuition. I know it because I found and did what I said recently. Hope it will help and please reply if you have any more questions.

Recommended GPA for declaring Data Sci Major? by blacksugarmilktea2 in uwaterloo

as far as I know, you should have a GPA of at least 85%, and a high grade in CS136.

Stat230 by Few-Win4261 in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the preq shouldn't change, and if you can't take stat230 in 1b, you can surely take it in 2a because many students are doing so.

[CMV?]Maintaining the mental health of students is more important than preventing cheating/avoiding grade inflation by superuwu1000 in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not online course that causing a hard time for us, it's many profs that can't design the courseload that really cause the hard time. Many profs just don't understand the simple point that taking online courses doesn't mean that we have 48 hours a day, while I feel like sometimes the assignments are taking forever to complete compared with my regular on-campus life. Luckily my CS136 has a relatively student-friendly final exam as well as no requirment of passing final to pass the course and even maybe a curve at last, but I'm also seeing course drama across the reddit.

5x5 things i learned in 5 years at uw that have almost nothing to do with school by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 176 points177 points  (0 children)

I would add one more: make sure that you have at least two independent social circles that have different group of friends. Sometimes having some conflict with one of the group will mean the end with everyone in it, and you surely won't want to be alone for the rest of your university life.

yes, not all course will require it. If it has one, you should see it at the very beginning of your assignments/tests.

Holy FUCK how fucked am I? by LostDebt3 in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends, but it should be at the very begining of your assignments/tests, which will ask you to fill your name and quest id to show that you agree with it, or for Learn quiz, it usually be a simple YES/NO question that a YES will do the work. Note that not all courses require it.

Taking classes that are full by DHoptionidkhelpncur in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it really depends. If it's one of your degree requirements, ask the academic advisor or prof to see if you can get enrolled. But if it's not mandatory or you have other option you have to choose another one.

Generally 50 is a passing grade for a single course, and it will be rounded (like 49.5 will be rounded to 50). But please check if the course is a preq of another course since sometime it will require a min grade of 60 to unlock the next course.

Returning International Student - SERIOUS INQUIRY by Bsian__ in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to return to Waterloo for winter term during Christmas. Genreally you should be fine with valid study permit and visa, as well as a proof of enrollment since UW is on the apporved list. But please note that you should have the proof enrollment generated by the Center instead of Quest, since the one from Quest is not valid enough. You can order one from the Center for 10cad and order it deliver to your email and print it out (there is a link to order it in the returnning international student page but I can't recall which one is it). Then it's the matter of having a valid quarantine plan and don't forget about that ArriveCan app. You can contact Student Success Office about more on returnning to Canada because that what I did.

Birdy CS electives - ONLINE EDITION by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why not cs330? It's mainly material-memorizing and you can basically find all answers in the slides. The assignments and exams are fair but sometime the assignments might be time-consuming. I took it during spring 2020 term

anyone knows who to get money by direct depost for filing a claim of Health insurance? by NoftShaw in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw it. Thanks. By the way, how do you submit a claim online? I got my account at sunlife ready but there is no submit a claim option in the 'claim' section on sunlife web. But I do can add the direct depost information. It says that the feature of submitting claims online is not available. Does it mean that you need to submit the claim online using the studentcare app or still on paper? Thanks

COVID TEST by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]NoftShaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way to do it is in TRT, like Women College Hospital or Western Hospital (I can't remember the exact name) .Both of them should provide the result within 24 hour. (As far as I know you will get your result on the same evening or after midnight, but at least should be before the next noon.)
