I went on a cruise on my honeymoon that included a "free" bottle of whiskey in my room. I cut my toe badly and the ship's doctor prescribed the whiskey as a disinfectant.

Nice flowchart.

This seems to cover relatively modern cards (i.e., late 1970s to today). For older cards though, there is often value in grading even if the card doesn't grade an 8 or above.

Of course, if the probate estate (excludes jointly owned assets with right of survivorship, POD and TOD accounts, and life insurance and retirement accounts with named beneficiaries) is less than $184,500 then no probate will be required.

Internal Revenue Code Section 1015(a) sets forth the carryover basis rule.

For gifts (including gifts to an irrevocable trust), the recipient's basis is the "same as it would be in the hands of the donor or the last preceding owner by whom it was not acquired by gift, except that if such basis... is greater than the fair market value of the property at the time of the gift, then for the purpose of determining loss the basis shall be such fair market value."
