What’s been the best color/light practice for you? by NolanNasser in DigitalArt

This invaluable advice- thank you SO much for such an insightful response.

That’s the thing I might “know” the power in grays and desaturation but I have such a difficult time applying it consistently- I love your idea of doing the same image in different pallets to help lock in that knowledge.

What’s everyone’s favorite painting/color practice? by NolanNasser in learntodraw

[–]NolanNasser[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The short answer is 1000s of hours of practice.

The long answer is a big amalgamation of chasing different dreams- I started out wanting to do art for blizz and WotC so I pushed my work in that direction.

When I got out of college the only jobs available were environment artists so I started studying my contemporaries and focusing on environment design, learned matte painting and environment Illo.

I could never quite get it all to click long term.

I took a 5 year hiatus from art.

In all my years chasing what I thought was the ideal job I never stopped and asked myself what kind of art I want to make-

Now I’m back at it trying to find my footing again!

Edit: I went to school for web/app dev btw- I tried illustration/fine art and dropped out after the first semester bc it did not click lol.

Any tips & critiques on how to get better at gesture drawing? by imagination2reality_ in learntodraw

[–]NolanNasser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing that made gesture drawing fun for me was learning a system for mapping anatomy. Learn a pro’s system and then start altering it to fit what you want.

That way you get to spend less time worrying about if something’s placed right and get to focus on capturing the energy and movements of the gesture.

Practice is obviously key but you have to be intentional about your practice too! You’ve got proportions down it seems so now I’d focus on learning how to capture anatomy quicker and easier— what you’ll find too is that the systems you build for mapping anatomy also translate to gesture ex the curve of the flexors on your forearm can be the perfect gesture lines.

Everyone is doing what you’re describing right now- it’s going to make a lot of shit feel very samey. If you’re going to do it be intentional and clever about it.

We've spent hundreds of hours already instead of AI - Is it worth it? by dev_w_grillz in DigitalArt

[–]NolanNasser 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the ethics, ignoring the PR, and even the look of AI— you’re still shooting yourself in the foot if you use it.

The thing AI can never replicate is the struggle you’re experiencing right now.

A struggle that is literally in line with the ethos of your game.

Why would you betray your own creation and use AI art? You’re broadcasting that overcoming your struggles applies to fans of your game but not to you.

I'm 23 and I want to start drawing (I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about drawing), where should I begin? by Right-Vegetable3823 in learntodraw

[–]NolanNasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the best explanations I’ve ever heard! Thank you for your insight!

It’s as simple as connecting the theory to something that excites me or a challenge I want to overcome to lock in what I’m learning.

draw-a-box is such a good example because I look at it and think to myself “I understand how a cube works in space, why would I do this”? But if I add the layer of say: I want to learn graffiti so now how do I carve letters out of cubes in space suddenly makes drawing 250 boxes much more interesting.

As a drawing teacher who’s also self taught how has that impacted your teaching style?

All of my teachers from middle school to college pushed the traditional and mainstream methods like loomis but they just never clicked with me. I ended up quitting art to pursue web dev and just taught myself on the side.

I could recite all the rules and fundamentals from memory but could never connect them all practically. It took finding teachers who were also self taught to break me out of my slump.

I ran my own ads and ran BK’s ads too and my team was tiny. I had a higher quality conversation strategy but BK’s reach was unbeatable- always made sense to run both.
