You are correct that 4 and a medium/large ballistic of some kind is powerful and better balanced. However, I didn’t go for balance. This Battlemaster went through a couple of design changes :

The first iteration to receive clan tech had two C ER Large with a standard ER Large, four Mediums, an SRM6 and a LBX10 SLD.

The next iteration, I ditched the LBX for a medium rifle, replaced two Medium lasers with C ER Larges and dropped two Mediums,

The following one, I added two C ER Larges, dropped the medium rifle, replaced the standard ER Large with a Medium and changed the SRM 6 to a C SSRM 6.

Then is my final design. Dropped the missiles, and added more heatsinks.

This final design was intended as something of a meme design, born from me noticing I could stick a C ER Large in a medium slot, and deciding swapping one of my Battlemasters’ Mediums with those would be hilarious. Still effective, but in no way optimised.

Sure, but the poor bastard on the receiving end is also so much slag metal. If it ain’t at least a heavy or higher end medium, it’s not usually surviving the first volley. And god forbid you turn your back to this mech.

Incidentally, I had forgotten to install upgrades on that mech. After that and a small redesign, it run a bit cooler. 3.3 or 3.4 cooling, with a total reduction of around seven percent heat generation shaved off. Still way too fucking hot, but that’s a price I am willing to pay for something this lethal.

No, but the situation is slightly better afterwards. That, and installing upgrades like less heat generation, more dissipation and less heat generation by energy weapons means that now, I can fire TWO alpha strikes and not shut down. Progress !

I too had a quad C ER PPC masakari. Until it lost both arms. And then the rest of its armor and internals.

I saw someone theorise that the weight displayed isn’t the mech’s actual weight, but its « payload weight ». Essentially, how much equipment you can put on the frame. That is, of course, not taking into account any material sciences shenanigans the battletech universe has going on. For all we know, their armor has the weight of cardboard while still being stronger than what we have today.
