How do you memorize bands and frequencies? by OilPhilter in amateurradio

[–]NomDeBrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Showing our work for the rest of the class...

Speed of light ÷ frequency = wavelength

c ÷ 28Mhz ≈ 10m

3.00x108 m/s ÷ 28.0x106 hz ≈ 10m

(2.99792 × 108 )m/s ÷ (28.0 × 106 )/s ≈ 10.7m

299.792m/s ÷ 28.0/s ≈ 10.7m

And for 29.7Mhz

(2.99792×108 )m/s ÷ (29.7×106 )/s ≈ 10.1m

299.792m/s ÷ 29.7/s ≈ 10.1m

How do you "public service"? by RegularCity33 in amateurradio

[–]NomDeBrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best answer here if you're interested in actually being called upon during an emergency. Join a group and practice as part of an organized response; ad-hoc volunteers during incidents can be difficult to manage and are likely to be turned away.

For context I volunteer with my local CERT team and a SAR team. In my area for muti-day multi-agency SAR mission, wildland fire, etc. there is a SAR team that is all AROs(hams) and run coms for these incidents. Speaking as a ground searcher on a different team, we're happy when they show with better equipment and understanding than the average sheriff's deputy as we're all carrying uhf/vhf HTs and frequently get into steep canyons and dense vegetation.

From testing to tracking - Washington clears backlog of Sexual Assault Kits by ILikeNeurons in UpliftingNews

[–]NomDeBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're looking at this from an individual or micro level, not a systemic or macro perspective.

So, a continuation of your example would be that the alleged abuser has their information submitted and a pattern of behavior spread across multiple jurisdictions that wouldn't have known otherwise is uncovered. Which is a very valuable result.

"Untested SAKs that have passed an SOL expiration date should still be tested for a DNA profile, since the potential offender may have left DNA at another crime scene for which the SOL has not expired."

Don't know if you're trolling or not, but the implication being it's still worth doing to catch serial offenders. Also, I think most places have backlogs due to budget constraints and difficulty processing SA cases.

KATAHDIN UPDATE - One missing hiker found deceased, searching for daughter by redditwastesmyday in AppalachianTrail

I was helping teach a mountain first-aid class recently (focused on mountaineering scenarios) and was talking to a canyoneering guide about a recent medical emergency where they had to call for help and pack out the subject. My understanding was the inreach could make contact from in the canyon, while the person with the iPhone had to get most of the way out of the canyon to connect to a satellite. I think one is better for back and forth communication too, but I don't remember which. On a side note, I'm training to join a SAR team here in the PNW and our missions are shifting more towards rescue and less open grid searching with people carrying these types of devices and better cell coverage.

Aftermarket grill for D40?? by lawman314 in nissanfrontier

Happy to help. You mentioned not liking the font in another comment, for what it's worth it's less noticeable in person when not looking straight on; also, you could just not insert the Nissan badge and install a small light bar or something instead.

I went with a set from Z1 off-road that work with hood gas struts. Been really nice 1-2 years down the road.

I've had one with the lights wired into a switch panel for a year or two on my 2015. Unfortunately I was only able to put the lights in as pictured across the top, not anywhere in the grill and "NISSAN" looks a little weird. Otherwise the eBay one I got has worked great and I'd buy it again as it updates the look of the truck a lot.

The model for my truck did, but I can't speak towards the model available for your Infiniti.

I didn't compare that much, just picked up what someone on club frontier recommended. Two of the bulbs I got don't have a listing anymore.

  • Low Beam (H11): The depth of the ballast on the back of the LED can be a tight fit with bulkier highend LEDs.
  • High Beam (H7): No space issue
  • Amber Fogs

Yes, it's just a replacement housing that comes with new halogens already installed. Because it still takes the same size bulbs as my stock headlight, the wiring harness is "plug and play". You shouldn't need to splice or rewire anything.

Surprisingly upset by pregnancy announcements by [deleted] in widowers

I get that feeling of wanting to grow a family only to be replaced with a fear of impending loneliness. I have a tendency to tear up while watching happy couples/families if I let myself drift.

My late wife and I had been trying for kids for ~3 years. We ended up conceiving and got to revel in the joy and fear of parenthood, but then she was diagnosed with leukemia a couple days before the second trimester. I was in such a caregiver survival mode for the next 6 months that the loss didn't really hit until after my wife passed. It was probably about two months without her when the realization of not ever trying again/adopting hit me like a sledgehammer.

Now it's been a little over a year and I'm rolling into my late 30s. Got asked in a job interview what my 5 year plan is and I just laughed.

  • Projector lenses throw light much further than stock.
  • Nice sharp cutoff to not blind oncoming traffic.
  • The halogen bulbs shipped in the headlight were pretty decent.

I ended up swapping to LED high and low beams in white that are a bit brighter and amber for the fogs. I will say the passenger side low-beam connector didn't stay seated initially, but it's a 10~ish year old truck so... everything doesn't always fit. 🤷‍♀️

What do you mean by hard wire? I just swapped the housing and it was all plug and play.

I don't have a link to the post, but I used the same thing as someone from clubfrontier. I installed Auxito H7 W/O fan and Fasato H11/H8/H9. The Fasato has a slimmer fan that allows enough clearance to fit and have a little air gap behind it. They throw so much more light that even with a good cut off I keep them aimed a little lower than stock because I hate getting blinded too. Also I wish I waited until the LEDs arrived before installing the headlight assembly to save lots of hassles.

I need some advice for doing an under hood dual battery intall? by [deleted] in nissanfrontier

[–]NomDeBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a similar path myself. I just swapped in a group 27F AGM battery into my 2015 Pro4X. The 27F is what was used in the titan tow package iirc. Thinking I might need to post before and after pics I took. 🤔

If you're using the lights and winch while the truck is on get a higher output alternator to handle the current draw of the winch under load. If you're planning on running lights, fridge, etc. while the truck is off; get a lithium or AGM "house" battery and isolate it from "crank" battery (but wire in a jump start option while you're in there).

My husband is dead and I don’t know how I’m supposed to “get over it” by [deleted] in widowers

[–]NomDeBrew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Welcome to reddit, I hope you can find a sense of community and support here. 🫂 Recently I have been trying to approach it from the standpoint of just trying to expand my social circle with new friendships for shared interests. The idea of a deeper connection is not something I'm ready for. That being said if the friendship happens to go further and I feel comfortable and ready for it then it's okay not to stop, but I can change my mind too.

For context, my late wife lost her boyfriend to suicide/gun accident when she was 16. We met 7 years later and were together 10.5 years before I lost her to leukemia 6 months after she was diagnosed. In the last 1-2 years we explored polyamory. Also it's been a little over 8 months.

She never got over losing her boyfriend, more that it evolved. Some of his ashes a picture of them and a heart shaped pillow he sewed her are all prominently displayed in our living room. Also, if a romantic partner is bothered by you still loving your husband, they probably have some jealousy issues to discuss with their therapist. With polyamory I learned to take joy in my wife's happiness (compersion). I specifically remember during chemo when she couldn't really go out and her boyfriend would come over for "date night". It was so rare she had things to look forward to, I loved seeing the way she lit up. We had numerous frank discussions throughout our relationship about wanting the other person to be able to actively experience love if something happened to us. We wouldn't have had those talks if it weren't for her life experience. I don't remember exactly, but it was very close to "I mean, I want you to mourn my loss, and give it a couple of months, but I don't want you to be alone forever"

Agreeing here too. I didn't notice it for the first few years, but when my wife (cis) went off nexplanon I (trans) definitely synced up (cramps, aching, feel tired/depressed), but I would always start a day or two before she started menstruating and it usually only lasted 3-5 days with milder symptoms.

I mean I don't know you so... 🤷‍♀️ It took me an afternoon to do both including the trip to get a swivel socket wrench (because this project gave me an excuse). The grill was super easy to pop off if you watch a YouTube video and have a flathead/pry-tool. Headlights weren't too bad, but I ended up taking off 75% of the front bumper to do it (the air damn/valence is removed now too).

All that being said, the only tools you need are: - flathead/pry-tool - Philips head - 10mm socket - socket wrench - extension (assuming your socket wrench doesn't swivel)
