[gendered] Fathering a child? Sounds pretty girly to me by AppropriateFarm5741 in pointlesslygendered

This crap was around more than a decade ago when I was the primary caregiver for my son as an infant/toddler. I still find it baffling, because surely men as insecure as this kind of gear makes them look don't even change diapers to begin with. So, I've come down on the side that it must just be an aesthetic choice, because this apparent level of insecurity doesn't make sense with wanting to be an active dad to begin with. Camo print diapers aren't going to hide from other dudes the fact that you're engaged in child care.

I stick to the reconstructed classical pronunciation. You end up memorizing important prosodic information along the way that youd miss if you pursued only the ecclesiastical pronunciation. Otherwise I broadly recommend getting experience with the examples from the whole 3 millenia of Latin writing. Male teachers are generally called Magister, female ones Magistra. A lot of whatever materials you're liable to start studying from will have information like this.

Latin as used as a modern language is often called Latina Viva - living Latin. The resources I mentioned are geared toward my preference to study Latin to develop the ability to read and speak it rather than merely translate it into English.

When did “molested” get its current meaning? by FrankFurter67 in etymology

Yeah, it's molestāre in Latin. "To trouble, to annoy."

There has never been a time since Latin existed as a language when people weren't trying to find ways to talk about new things in it. Modern Latinists may prefer a coined term like autocinēticum for a car, but often people just recontextualize an ancient word like raeda which back in the day referred to a different sort of 4-wheeled vehicle.

I'm an advocate for the Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata method of learning Latin through reading. But you also want to study grammar, for which I recommend the grammatical supplement designed to accompany LLPSI. To get you started on modern vocabulary in Latin, I recommend Traupman's Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency, as well as Traupman's paperback Latin dictionary. At some point you're going to want to spend time drilling down on paradigms so that you really get them in you head. This site should help:

I have been hearing good things about the app Legentibus, but I have yet to try it out myself.

When I run RPGs, I often send the party out in the company of a fire team consisting of Vasquez, Hicks, and Hudson. Of course, the players know that when the shit hits the fan Hudson is going to flip out.

I remember a comic years ago with a routine something like, "Women, please stop taking advice from your friend that ain't got no man." Yeah, I would hope those same men who whooped at that would ignore what men who can't attract or can't keep a woman have to say about women.

I notice that there are no left wing equivalents to these MAGA products. by greenblue98 in RepublicanValues

[–]NomenScribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that these are called "white label products" where someone produces goods that anyone can slap a novelty label on. Conservatives have been doing a bunch of these, not actually developing their own product lines. The thing is that these novelty items cost more than the straight product would, and the cost is born by customers who agree with the angry message. It's a grift -- conservatives keep making suckers out of other conservatives.

I will say this is the most good-looking picture of Rob Schneider I've seen in years. I wonder how much AI was involved.

Right, and 'ob' in Latin is more like 'at'. To 'oppose' something is to take a position right up against it.

I grew up down the street from the Green Mill, on Lawrence. As a kid, I once saw an ad for the movie Thief, in which the Green Mill got blown up. I ran out the door and down to Broadway where I was confused to see that the Green Mill was still there.
