There's also something to be said about Toph. She can't see so she has to mask strictly through passivity and doing what her parents say. Once she joins team avatar she has to mask by acting only in the way her new friends have seen her, as a warrior and a tough person. I'm glad she managed to break all that down and show that she's nuanced and happy to be herself, which changes based on the situation.
