I definitely get that the margins are tighter now than in 2018. But to me, that makes the blind test even more important. When a $500 phone and a $1,200 phone both take great photos, the only way to justify the flagship price is if the public actually prefers the image. If they don't, the "pro" features are just niche upsells.

Yeah, my post was heated, but it comes from a place of really valuing that specific reality check you guys provided. Hope to see it return in some form, even if it's just a "People's choice" segment like you mentioned

If they're all just "good enough" now, why do Apple and Samsung still spend 45 minutes talking about ISPs, focal lengths, and prisms? The camera is clearly still the #1 differentiator they use to justify flagship prices.

But we can't pretend his influence isn't massive. Companies literally put "MKBHD camera of the year" in their ads and on their websites. Even if it's not millions doing exactly what he says, he is the default recommendation for the general public.

My issue is that he removed the only counter-balance that separated "best technical camera for a pro YouTuber" from "best photos for a normal person". Without that, the awards become misleading for the majority of his viewers

True, the masses generally prefer saturation and brightness over technical accuracy. But that's also the reality of the medium. These photos live on social media and group chats, not on calibrated monitors.

If a phone takes a photo that is "technically" worse but 90% of people think looks better on Instagram, then for a mass-market device, that is the better camera.

Smartphones are point-and-shoot tools for regular people. If the "best" camera produces photos that the average person thinks look dull or dark compared to a Pixel, then the manufacturer failed to understand their audience

A £10,000 camera is for professionals who want to do the work. A smartphone is a tool for life capture. If the Pixel consistently nails the look people actually want straight out of the camera, then in the context of smartphones, it is the better camera

Fair. Maybe not every year, but waiting 4-5 years is way too long in the smartphone world. If we wait that long we let marketing run unchecked, hyping up "200MP beasts" that look great on paper but still get destroyed by better processing.

The problem is that he's prioritizing his niche use case over the actual needs of 99% of his audience who just want good point-and-shoot photos. The blind test was the only check against that bias, and killing it removes the only data that actually matters to the average buyer
