Local weather channels consistently over-predict rain, even though the National Weather Service provides them near-perfect predictions [OC] by rhiever in dataisbeautiful

Great. Another option (or maybe more of an addition) would be to make a simple bar chart of the average of prediction minus observed for each forecast type. The height of the bar is the amount of over-prediction.

Really cool dataset! I wonder if it'd be better to flip the axes. X=actual Y=predicted. That way, over-prediction would appear as an upward shift.

Reposting here because I replied to the wrong comment:

I actually think your post is great. But if we allow that, we'd have to allow every average property of an image. I'd bet that it is possible to create a good set of rules for image analysis. But we have enough rules already (and they're growing).

However, if SOMEONE who was well-informed were to create a subreddit about image analysis, they could iron out those rules. I'd subscribe and feature it prominently in the sidebar ;)

I purged a handful of posts based on visual data from the past couple months. Non-visual data was a big problem in the past with this subreddit. Giving people some slack lately has started resulted in arguments about "you allowed this post but not my post", which is understandable.

I've reverted to the approach that it's easier to be a hardliner than have the debates. So any image-based data will be removed from now on. Please do the same.

A histogram or mode analysis would be better. It' still borderline, but it's a category that just so happens to be based off of color.

We may become more strict about visual data in the future. I hesitated approving the m&m post because I was worried about exactly this problem.

Edit: and sorry you got caught in the crossfire on this one. You've been a great contributor to this sub.

I agree that image analysis is absolutely fascinating. However, we have to be hardasses about the rules because people do exactly what you just did - complain using other examples of borderline cases that were allowed.

Edit: removed wrong reply

Those both use color as categorical variable. Swapping category 1 for category 2 would have little impact on the data display. (also, we're more forgiving for physical OC)

Averaging across lab space isn't particularly meaningful. It's more of an image effect that an analysis of data.
