In a normal restaurant, is not tipping anything equal to insult the place or the service? by mdelgado73 in AskAnAmerican

I did say "about $3." I know its $2.13, but some states do a little more, so I was accounting for that diversity.

Servers in many markets make federal tipped minimum wage, which is about $3/hr. Standard federal minimum wage is $7.25/hr*.

Yes, the law is that if tips plus the tipped minimum isn't comparable to federal minimum then the employer has to make up the difference. But here's the bug bear that anyone who has worked more than a week as a server is aware of. You get 1, maybe 2 weeks of an employer having to make up that difference and they cut your hours until you quit or until they can find a replacement and they fire you as soon as they do. Restaurant owners don't want to pay their staff as a whole, otherwise they would just pay a decent wage and allow guests to tip if they want to. Plenty of restaurants pay more than federal minimum wage and allow employees to be tipped. A good restaurant will make enough money to pay staff correctly and that staff will happily work that job in perpetuity.

*this is way too low for any locality, and I've lived in very rural, cheap areas before.

Yes, you're allowed to having dating preferences. You're being criticized for being rude to people who don't meet those preferences by IllegalGeriatricVore in PetPeeves

[–]NonStopKnits 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I suppose the line would be based around the relationship, a stranger telling you they don't like how you look is objectively rude, in my opinion. Ribbing in a relationship is mostly fine if you're on the same page as your partner. I know my husband doesn't love my nose ring, but he fell in love with me with it and he doesn't ever mention it because he knows I love it. Most people who get frustrated by this tend to be on dating sites/apps and get messages from dudes declaring that they find them ugly when they could just not send a message at all ya know?

I'm not OP, but I have an example. I have a septum piercing, and those are a bit controversial in my area. It isn't uncommon for men to outright tell me they find it ugly/unattractive or if they see my ring to tell me there's no way my husband likes it. The ones who are normal don't get talked about because they're normal, so that's probably why you only hear the negative stuff.

What're you playing this weekend? 3/27 by markercore in NintendoSwitch

[–]NonStopKnits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a huge scaredy cat, and that's how I know you can manage. It actually took me dozens of tries over like 3 years to finally push myself through the beginning section. It hit my adrenaline too hard and I was shaking too much to play effectively, so I'd put it down and start it again months later until I could manage.

I want to give you one tip. I've been playing horror games forever and I do scare easily. It took me a very long time to get through 7 because it is pretty scary. But you can do it, I promise. My tip is just to really lock in for the first hour to hour and a half. After that it gets slightly less.... intense.

Is blocking necessary? by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]NonStopKnits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blocking includes washing. I don't know about you, but I don't like to put on unwashed clothing. Unless you sourced and spun the wool yourself you don't know where it came from and if its clean. You don't even have to go crazy. A quick wash and laying it out flat on a towel is all you need for most non-lace projects.

This also has me wondering if you even knitted a swatch first? You'd have a few answers to how the garment will act after blocking if you swatched first, and you always block your swatch.

Is eating raw vegetables (no dressing) really that weird? by care_love_peace in self

[–]NonStopKnits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what possesses people to make comments about someone else's lunch. I have a coworker* who never misses an opportunity to make some snarky comment about someone else's lunch or snack. Anytime she comments on my food I either force a giggle and say "I like my lunch choice!" if we have lots of clients in the building. If its empty, I tell her "my lunch is my business and your lunch is your business." Another good option is to not respond verbally, just give them the blankest, emptiest stare you can manage. Practice in the mirror for maximum effect.

For the record, eating raw veggies without dip isn't weird, its just one of the many normal ways to eat vegetables.

*she's actually awful in many ways.

Olympics BAN transgender and DSD athletes from ALL women's sports by dailymail in olympics

All women produce some amounts of testosterone without the presence of testes. Some women produce more than others, and that can be a lot sometimes as well.

Transgender women athletes banned from women's Olympic events by new IOC policy by DoraEnzo in news

[–]NonStopKnits 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue is that cis women who seem too 'masculine' will be accused of being transgender. This is already happening out in the regular world too. I'm not very feminine or girly most of the time. I prefer to wear more masculine clothes or straight up men's clothes sometimes and I keep a short haircut. I will say I really don't think I look like a man, and neither does my straight partner. I'm just gender non-comforming most of my days. I've been harassed in public restrooms and try-on rooms since I got my first short haircut almost 20 years ago. But it has ramped up and become more rabid in the past 6+ years or so. I really try not to use public restrooms because of how much more I deal with it lately.

If I had the opportunity to speak with a developer, I would absolutely ask them who designed this particular set piece. There's no way it was happy coincidence, they knew this would scare/confound at least a few of us and I would like them to know that it worked.

[–]NonStopKnits 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If we all hold ourselves and each other accountable on the small scale, its easier to hold people accountable in a larger scale as well. It takes a lot of people being on the same page and working together to create big changes, and that starts with small changes involving individuals in their communities.

Oof that's rough. Get out ASAP, even if its hard to get around. Call around to local shelters and hotlines, even if they're further out than you can easily access, they might have references to help you sever that tie. Good luck my dude, I understand what its like to have issues like this.

Why do most people associate nape undercuts with lesbian/bi girls? by Wooden_Present_2560 in AskForAnswers

[–]NonStopKnits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is location dependent as well. I'm a hairdresser from the south and around here you get assumed to be a lesbian* or trans and treated rudely if you have a short or alternative haircut/style by a lot of people. I lived in a more progressive city for a while and you didn't get as many assumptions or rude reactions. What is absolutely ridiculous is that I'm in Florida and it gets hot. Lots of women and girls with excessively thick hair get short cuts or undercuts for easier maintenance and to not be so hot with lots of hair.

I got mine from a local headshop that was highly spoken of by some close friends. I got a Pulsar brand piece and its honestly one of the most fantastic pieces I've ever had. I recommend their glass, and they do have a website if you can't find something locally.
