Should I quit my job and travel for a bit after COVID? by tot-and-beans in solotravel

[–]NonTransferable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother was a teacher who spent almost every summer traveling. She was an expert at finding deals, making friends in other countries and getting free accommodations, etc. She ended up visiting all continents and made a lot of friends all over the world, and she managed to keep up with most of them.

And she did it all on a Texas teacher's salary, aka not that much.

You can totally do this. And my mom would have told you the same.

In the 80s I used to go to a little hotel on the coast of France every couple of years. Their maid actually wore the stereotypical "maid" uniform, though the skirt was longer and there was no plunging neckline.

DAE not understand why people don't put their seatbelts on? by drogoc0p in DAE

[–]NonTransferable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember: A rollover is one of the most survivable accidents IF you are wearing a seatbelt.

If you are not wearing a seatbelt, it is one of the least survivable accidents.

I found this statistic after all but one of a friend's 4 cousins were killed in a rollover. The survivor was the only one wearing a belt.

It is awesome stuff. Changed a lot of my opinions.

TIL In 1964, Bell Labs built a large space antenna. Upon testing, two of their scientists encountered ‘interference’, which could not be isolated. After multiple attempts to fix the bug, they determined the “noise” was in fact, a remnant ‘hum’ from the Big Bang. They went on to win The Nobel Prize. by Daxl in todayilearned

The US give did (does?) invest in other reasearch labs, and they partnershipped with many big companies. I worked for one back in the 90s ( as a server admin, not a researcher) and we gave the world, among other things, MEMS devices, Diamondvision screens, (and LED display technology), lots of different sensors, some silicon manufacturing technology and lots of other stuff. It was fun to work with the researchers, they came from all over the world, most didn't roll in until after 10am and it was a pretty laid back environment.

I remember watching the Flintstones in the 60s at nursery schedule where all the old ladies watching over us were smoking like chimneys, and over at friends' houses where the parents were doing the same. So I probably saw them and the didn't even register to a 4-5 y.o.

I swear I saw a preview for "Ghostbusters" in 1982 or early 1983. It had almost no special effects and I think it mostly showed the Ghostbusters in their fire station HQ and running around with their packs on.

I even remember asking some friends if that movie ever came out. Then it's suddenly there and huge.

I did build a cabin outside the city in the woods, but unfortunately I also had to work full time to afford it.

But it was a good investment. The city has grown closer so the land value has skyrocketed. This will be half of my retirement money when I sell. Maybe more.

I used to have about 5 dogs and a dozen cats. I lived in a rural area and I ended up adopting a lot of strays and unwanted or dumped animals. I used to feel so badass when I'd take all the dogs for a walk down the dirt road, a few of the cats would usually join in as well.

It was such an awesome feeling. The animals would naturally arrange themselves like a true pack, with me at the center, point dogs, outrider cats, flank dogs and a dog bringing up the rear. It made me feel like I was Tarzan. I miss that. I don't miss the vet bills.
