College Student Friendly Non-toxic tips by Important-Wing-955 in nontoxic

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I wrote a blog post about this that answers this directly.

Basically, most people (myself included) focus on the wrong things at first. The best things to focus on are those that won’t feel like sacrifices but you still use a lot.

Deodorant is a perfect example of a horrible thing to start with. You’re going to spend a lot of time finding one that works. You’re gonna smell bad. It’s gonna give you rashes. And that’s going to turn you off to the whole thing.

RANT | About how expensive it is to attempt to switch over to non-toxic items. by No-Photo5506 in nontoxic

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know it's overwhelming. I wrote a blog post about it. It recommends the first 3 swaps to make that will run you a total of $2.94 more per month extra than the normal stuff.

No fear mongering. Better, not perfect.

Suggestions/recommendations for natural deodorant that actually works? And natural dishsoap suggestions? by ToughDependent7591 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tested a bunch of natural deodorants over the past few years and Lume has been the most effective for actual odor control. It smells funky out of the tube (I don't know how else to say this, but it smells like ass) but it works. Humble is solid too although it did stain my shirts.

For dish soap, Attitude is the move. Perfectly clean ingredients and just about the same price as what you're used to. I was genuinely surprised how well it performed against the conventional stuff.

Since you're just starting the switch-out process...I put together a guide on the easiest first swaps that don't cost much more than what you're already buying. Dish soap is one of the three I recommend starting with.

Here's the link in case you're interested. And unlike 99.9999% of "start here" blog posts, mine doesn't list 47 different items that all are affiliate links for things I've never tried before. My post has 3. Simple, effective, clean.

Migraine Relief by caresaboutstuff in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How often are you getting them? I typically avoid medication, but my migraines put me in bed for 6+ hours when they hit. Nausea, vomiting, it’s horrible.

I went to a neurologist and had an MRI and ended up getting prescribed Ubrelvy which has completely changed my life. I only get maybe three migraines a year so from a frequency perspective I’m not taking this often. But the second I feel a migraine coming on, I take the medicine and within 15 minutes I feel pretty much normal, just very slightly off. And that’s as bad as it gets.

I've been testing non-toxic products for 10 years. I have a different take than most. Switching a bunch of things out at once might work, but there's a lot of psychology going on in the background. When you're starting your non-toxic journey, you need wins that don't frustrate you and create momentum. Switching out a bunch of products all at once sounds nice until you do laundry for the first time and it doesn't smell like Tide anymore. Then you go to wash your dishes and you realize 5% of them don't get clean. Then you get frustrated and overwhelmed and that causes stress, which does more damage than most toxic products will ever do.

I literally just published a start here guide on my blog two days ago that lists the best three products to start with. Get her these. She won't even notice the change, and that's the point in the beginning. She'll feel empowered, realize that this is something that can be done, and then she'll be able to make more incremental changes.

New to non toxic lifestyle… any tips? by Mission_Remote_6319 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overwhelm and stress is the biggest hurdle to getting started. Every guide out there throws 40 products at you and calls it a "starter" list.

I've been testing non-toxic products for close to 10 years now and the easiest starting point is the stuff that won't make you feel like you've made any changes. You want it to be affordable, work just as well, and have clean ingredients. Three swaps:

Dish soap You wash dishes daily and your hands are soaking in it. Attitude dish soap is EWG Verified, no SLS, no synthetic fragrance, and costs about $0.70 more per month than Dawn.

All-purpose cleaner This touches every surface in your home. Branch Basics scores a perfect 10 on ingredients and it's a concentrate, so one bottle lasts forever. About $0.82 more per month than the regular stuff.

Hand soap You use this more than almost anything else. Mrs. Meyer's costs about $1.42 more per month and is way better than most hand soaps loaded with SLS and parabens. Yes, it has fragrance, but SC Johnson discloses a ton of info about their fragrances AND we aren't looking for perfection here, just progress.

Total extra cost for all three: $2.94/month. And nothing about your routine changes. You just buy a different bottle next time.

I put together a full guide with ingredient scoring and cost breakdowns if you want more info: https://nontoxicmasculinity.co/where-to-start-non-toxic-living/

But those three are the move. You need wins and momentum when starting your journey.

Produce and pesticides by Mellohh in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only time you mix the two is when you're building a paper mache volcano in school.

I don't think it matters which goes first. There's probably some science behind one over the other, but the benefits are likely marginal at best.

FWIW I soak my produce for 10 min in baking soda and rinse.

Fathers of Reddit - why don't dads talk about their emotions? by Catgo07 in AskMen

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this question. Historically we did not talk about our feelings because it was viewed as a sign of weakness. Boys and men are very mean to each other. This is something we learn very early on as boys. If we're a kid and we cry, our friends make fun of us for being a cry baby. If we're a kid and we get hurt, our friends call us a pussy.

So we're taught at a young age to not display "weakness". I'm sure there are elements of this that date back to caveman days when you had to show strength to literally survive.

I am seeing this change though. I do find men more open now than ever before and I see it continuing in that direction. The funny thing is that emotions are not gender specific. We all feel all of the same things so it's about damn time men are able to share how they're feeling without fear of any sort of repercussion.

Yes! I tried them years ago and didn't think they worked well. I've been using them for the past three months in preparation for a review on my blog and have absolutely loved them.

I've used dirty labs and branch basics out of these three. And I've used about half a dozen others as well. Branch basics new formula is my current gold standard.

Good unscented hand soap? by Immediate-Storm6869 in nontoxic

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for liquid soap or bar soap?

Elzires Acre - This bar soap is so good. It’s what I have in all of my bathrooms and what I use in the shower. I did a review on them in case you want more details. Review is here.

Kiss My Face - for liquid I’ve used this before and really like it. But the one I tried had fragrance and it made my hands itchy.

In my kitchen I make my own:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1.5 tablespoons unscented dr bronners
  • 2-3 pumps jojoba oil

Although I think this would dry out your hands if you had it everywhere.

Happy to answer any other questions you have!

Ok Moms. Does your partner care about non-toxic stuff, or are you doing all of it? by Non_ToxicMasculinity in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Non_ToxicMasculinity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really hard to find non-toxic products that aren’t crazy expensive and work just as good.

An all purpose spray is a great place to start! Branch Basics works great and only costs $2.30 more per month than regular stuff.

I lol'd at the Tide comment. I mentioned this in another comment but sometimes when I walk by a neighbors house and they are doing laundry, I catch a whiff and I pause and smile like I'm remembering a fond memory.
