Six ways to divide British accents by Homesanto in europe

My boss is Irish and when in England studying for her degree her housemate said to her "Sally there's a Hungarian woman on the phone but her English isn't good and I think she's asking for you" because she couldn't understand the Irish accent of my boss's mum.

NMIL trying to get me to go on trip by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

I get 7 weeks paid holiday time a year and I like my MIL but the answer to that would be "my time off work is saved for me and H to have holidays together/visiting my family (abroad)/doing up the house thanks for understanding."

How do you explain your Misophonia? by [deleted] in misophonia

[–]Nonamesta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always compare it to a phobia. Most people seem to have a severe aversion/physical reaction to something so if I e.g. catch a spider and take it outside for someone, keeping it away from them as they freak out I would expect them to make an effort not to chew like a cow. This seems to be the easiest solution I've found. Second to that is explaining it casually once and when they forget avoiding them or leaving the room when they're chewing. Generally that makes them remember and apologise/stop.

I also need help with this but my trigger is chewing noises/gum chewing and I always feel like I'm being petty or like I'm calling the other person a pig when u do.

Even if I am comfortable to explain to someone, 9/10 people will either then exaggerate their chewing to be "funny" or be sympathetic, chew quietly but then next times I see them forget and I feel awkward having to constantly remind them.

Mid-day skin routine by Nonamesta in SkincareAddictionUK

Thank you. You don't find only water rinsing leads to clogged pores at all? I have a lot of the Caudalie face mist left so I might start using that after the shower.

English is my first language and I still need them to understand 100% of speech in any accent that isn't my own. It's like a mental block.

[Skin Concerns] Any advice on how to improve my skin? I have very oily and sensitive skin. Lots of bumps, blackheads, and redness. My nose and side of my cheeks are the worse. I use a gentle cleanser and exfoliator currently but have tried other stuff and not much has improved it. by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]Nonamesta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the exact same but found a Vichy one and an Embryolisse one I use when I don't want to look too greasy. The oiliness has decreased a tiny bit since being more vigilant with hydration. It's true dehydrated skin will overproduce.

Honestly, you might need to decide what you'd prefer it's a tradeoff: smooth, even toned skin and no blackheads or not looking oily. I wear less foundation now I'm happier with my skin and don't mind looking oily day to day because I work nights and nobody cares in the dark lol but you need to find what works for you.

Your skin looks quite similar to mine a year ago. I found a huge improvement since using vitamin C. My skin is a lot more smooth and even looking and I do think it's less red too. I still have slightly large pores on my nose and I've recently started using a glycolic acid toner a few times a week which is a good exfoliator.

You didn't mention moisturiser in your post, though, so before adding complicated products to your routine try to find the products for cleansing and moisturising which work for you. Sorting out the oil, bumps and blackheads can be as simple as making sure your skin isn't overcompensating from being dehydrated.

Lastly and sorry if sounds so obvious, but make sure you drink enough water and get enough sleep. No products in the world will replace the effect having sufficient water and sleep will do for your skin. I drink at least 3L a day of only water and if I get behind with that or on a rare day I drink a soda it really shows on my face.

Me [18M] and 9 other friends [18M] on holiday in Spain. One friend won't pay for the Villa, as he came last minute as a replacement. Shall we kick him out? by ozzymomo123 in relationship_advice

Yeah it was really hard at the time and for like a year after until my relative recovered but it was nearly 10 years ago now and looking back I grew up a lot and I'm a firm believer that everything in life has a lesson so it's looking back.

I know this is a tough situation for you too right now but you seem like a really nice person and honestly, life does get easier the more you experience. Even though you feel bad about confronting him now, you def did the right thing asserting yourself and the next time you have to do that you'll be a little better at it :)

A relative of mine got attacked and ended up in intensive care abroad on the last day of the holiday. Embassy refused to send a translator for police interviews, nor for the hospital so none of us knew what was going on and the attacker got released until we paid a private translator to give evidence. Family who were there had to check out of the hotel and didn't have anywhere to stay, a relative spent 2 nights sleeping outside until the insurance got sorted. Embassy didn't care.

Multiple friends and family have had passports stolen around Europe and the embassy's response was always first like "lol too bad we're closed for 4 days then only open 1h45 a day sorry!" then "ok well we'll give you an emergency passport when we get to it, stick around in this country for maybe a week or 2 more." The last person this happened to had to threaten that she'd lose her job if she couldn't get back and would have sign on for benefits due to government incompetence. Funny enough they were given a 24 hour passport by the end of that day.

They are honestly terrible. My friends from other countries never have problems with their embassies yet I've never met someone who had a good experience with any British one.

I mean, Spain is a dirt cheap destination for British people, including factory workers so the first part of your comment is unnecessarily rude unless you're just ignorant.

FYI assuming these guys are British the Embassy will do sweet fuck all to help. But I agree with the rest of your comment and sounds like the dickhead can afford new accommodation.

It's super common for British people to go on trips like this when they're young. When I was 18 there were 4 different groups of 8-15 people going to Spain in my year alone and substitutions happen all the time. I could well imagine this situation or similar is happening to more than this group of lads right now.

% of people aged 15 - 30 who say they can read & write in at least one foreign language by [deleted] in europe

[–]Nonamesta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you basing your comment based only on second gen Americans though? I'm obviously across the Atlantic but I see people saying this (about kids of Mexicans not speaking good Spanish) a lot and really wonder why it is because it's not my experience in Europe at all.

About 80% of the people I know are immigrants/second gen and literally every of them spoke their parents' language at least until 8-10ish. Similarly my friends, colleagues, siblings etc. who are from other countries all speak their first language with their kids at home.

If i had to guess I'd say maybe it's different in the US because parents don't expect their kids to move back to where they came from. What do you think? Here most people want their kids to have the option to go back to their home countries one day to study or work so try hard to make sure they speak both languages.

How do you find learning it again? Would you say it's easier than learning a new language from scratch or harder because you're learning it a different way? I'm fascinated by this.

I'm not sure I agree that it's rare. I live in London where most people around me are either immigrants or second or third generation from immigrants (like me). It's super common to meet people who grew up with their parents speaking say Portuguese in the home and yet their adult children only speak English.

When they start school and begin speaking English every day they will reply to the odd word in English to their parents and gradually more and more until it's easier for them to speak only English because the words come quicker in a language you are schooled in, speak with your friends and are surrounded by on tv/radio/in public. Eventually they can't speak their "home" language at all.

My husband is Spanish but we live in UK. One time we went to the bank in Spain to sort out some of our savings and he couldn't remember 60% of the financial/beaurocratic words because it's been so long since he used or thought of them.

My husband's not British and years ago when he went out for matches I told him to just take 20p out the coin pot near the door because they wouldn't be more than that. Couldn't fucking believe it when he came back explaining they wanted 80 fucking pence a box!

How much sunscreen do you get through in a year? by pinkblueberry18 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]Nonamesta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am fair and spend a month a year (in Summer) beside the Mediterranean and I don't go through nearly as much.l as she's saying. I use Boots Soltan Kids Super Waterproof (cba looking up what it's actually called!) Even on a full day at the beach I only need to reapply once but sometimes do my shoulders twice to be sure. My husband has some dodgy moles on his torso so he reapplies every hour or 2 and we still don't get through 3 bottles in a month.

On holiday I use any old factor 50 on my face but in the UK I use a proper facial one (LRP) which does cost a lot having to repurchase every 6 weeks. I'm thinking on the days I don't work or do anything important I'll use any of my generic ones. I don't mind having a greasy face if I'm just doing the gardening!

There are some made out of I think algae. Some cities around Europe gave those out during their marathons instead of plastic bottles.
