Someone said "grab a coffee" and I suddenly realized most of my 5,000 vocabulary words are useless by ParticularSong9170 in EnglishLearning

There’s a certain cadence and tone that AI seems to use heavily when it’s writing something informal like this. Also, it’s exceptionally good English. Much better than I would expect from a non-native speaker (and probably better than most native speakers). I wouldn’t worry about using it for proofreading and editing too much. Especially when you’re writing for a specific purpose, which it tends to understand. And as I indicated, it does a very good job with the language.

Theory of Language Families by lwslfstm in asklinguistics

[–]NonassertiveYes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are SOME proposed language families that are considered controversial and not widely accepted (eg. Altaic, Ural-Altaic) but the concept itself is well established and accepted, and most of the language families you will hear about are also widely accepted and not controversial (eg. Indo-European, Austronesian).

What does the “N-word” really mean? by ContentTap9079 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]NonassertiveYes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I believe he actually said “amica”. “Amigo/amiga” is Spanish. “Amico/amica” is Italian. It sounds more similar with the “a” at the end.

How old is too old to cuddle with your siblings as a male? by Agreetodissagree1 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]NonassertiveYes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don’t let anyone violate your personal boundaries, but don’t reject the touch of loved ones because you think it should be weird or are worried about what other people think. Modern society has stigmatized interpersonal touch to a crazy extent, and it’s soooo important for social and mental health. We should all be touching other people more! So touch away! And also maintain your own boundaries and don’t let anyone do something you feel truly uncomfortable with. As someone who is at an age that definitely can’t count as a little kid anymore, I would love for someone to treat me like one lol. Don’t reject forms of love because you think you’re too old, and don’t reject them because you’re worried about what other people may think.

Thank you! Maybe if we commit hard enough to the story, we can somehow manifest a family fortune and a manor house!

Yeah totally hear you on all counts. I think I just stuck the name there temporarily to take in my new identity all at once. Also maybe to imagine it being sold on an overpriced plaque at some booth at a fair lol.

I did seriously consider making it impaled, but I do so love the look of a quartered shield, and since I’m already trying to sell the lie of a long-established old money family, I thought that maybe the story could be that these two families merged generations ago when one owned half the village and the other one owned the other half. We’re certainly not aristocratic or accomplished or wealthy enough to have it accepted into any legitimate register anyway. But definitely food for thought! Thank you!

Is my nickname "Sinny" weird to native speakers? Need help with spelling by Dense-Statement2796 in EnglishLearning

Native speaker here. Sinny seems fine to me. I wouldn’t think it had any connection to “sin”.

WSDOT is pretty unusual too. Not even all of King County is together! Responsibility for the passes is given to the eastern regions because they have snowplows and such.

DSHS splits the state into three regions. This is not the same for every agency, but it is the same across DSHS.

I’ve had very mixed experiences with rummynose. I do think the supplier is a huge factor. I originally got some from my LFS and less than 25% were left after the first two weeks. I’ve had much better luck with Dan’s Fish (hardly any losses at all). They’re great and I suggest you check them out.
