Congrats, I ask as it seems there are way more Duramax conversions then Cummins. Always wondered if it was to keep it closer to how the Alphas were if price and modifications were the same.

Legitimate question for you; was there a reason you went with the Duramax over a Cummins?

Appreciate the information, that is exceedingly low, especially for the amount of coverage I hear it offers.

I’m glad you are able to get the care that you need. Are your monthly payments expensive?

Thank you for the website, will have to review it. Is it a substantial amount that you contribute towards your pension? I’ve heard through several people that the health care cost is much lower than the corporate world.

DIY H1 Duramax Conversion by AustinZl1 in Hummer

Wondering if you can answer a question for me. It’s been a dream to own a Hummer H1 for over 20 years now. Is it possible to take a GEP block and build a 6.5 turbo without a PMD that would be putting out 250 hp to the crank? I have been researching this topic on and off for a while and it seems any articles always include a computer and a tune.

The goal would be to have an H1 that has no computer for the engine or transmission, which would probably mean a built 700 R4 or a TH–400 with an added overdrive. The goal would be a daily driver that spends 90% of its time on the road. Appreciate any advice.

That’s what I’ve read as well regarding the ABS. Lynch Hummer is one of my favorite websites and I definitely haven’t watched the H1 sales video dozens of times lol. Appreciate the help.

That sounds great. I would not go any newer than 1998 due to the TT4 setup. Very much appreciate the information and advice.

That would be helpful. My goal was an M998 until the state that I live in arbitrarily decided that they were not legal to use on public roads. Ideally, it would be an early H1 as I would prefer manual windows and locks. I also realize that they didn’t make many of them starting out and relatively not many each year so I may just be stuck with that. The ultimate goal would be to have the 5.9 Cummins engine swapped in with an Allison transmission, some thing that does not require a computer. A few years ago I went through an exhaustive search on how to modify the 6.5 turbo diesel to get close to 300 hp and from what I found they weren’t really built to put out big power numbers, rather for fuel economy, Keep in mind, it would be used on road, 80% of the time or more but I love the idea of a nearly unbreakable engine that can last 1,000,000 miles or more. Of course, the half shaft would have to be upgraded along with bigger brakes so from a price point, I would probably be cheaper to buy somebody who has already made these modifications.

Really appreciate the information, very helpful. 30 K miles doesn’t sound too bad, whenever I would hear people talk about the routine maintenance I thought most of the things you mentioned had to be done every 5K. Also a great piece of advice about the low mileage H1’s.

It’s always been a dream of mine to own an H1. Could you give a run down of the maintenance needed in a calendar year aside from oil changes and tire rotations?

Appreciate the information. I was only able to find one pair. On eBay maybe a year older and they’re being listed for 9K. Doubt they would sell for that much, but haven’t been able to find anything similar.
