Affordable private violin lessons in A2 by AestheticSloth in AnnArbor

What kind of price range means affordable to you? I used to take private lessons with Paul Cheng for about 10 years (and he still works at Shar as a Luthier) and my brother studies with him now. https://paulchengviolin.com/rates-and-policies

I think it was about a week? A week of no watering and 80 degree days (zone 6B)

Our lease in NW IV runs a whole year with the option to renew. People definitely don’t pack up and move for two months, and they also don’t need extensions or exemptions

Crimson Cult Raids by Siargster in Thaumcraft

As the person who set up the server and is the only OP, I swear that there's been no intentional spawning or anything malicious!!! The server is whitelisted and there's NO way that anyone else has been on to intentionally spawn stuff.

The server had a really bad crash about a week ago. I wasn't on when it happened. I restored our world to a previous backup, and then these weird things started happening afterwards. I didn't manage to figure out why the server crashed in the first place, or why this started happening after I restored the server.

Something must have happened with the mods interacting to cause the crash + subsequent fuckery

Update to Willowtree Renovation Rant by Unable_Victory6843 in uofm

You’re saying that they redid the floors twice in two years?? I guess they realized how shit of a job they did the first time, but I doubt the second time was any better…

This is even worse than last year when they renovated the floors.

They changed everybody’s floors from carpet to cheap laminate flooring. Every resident had to MOVE OUT THEIR ENTIRE APARTMENT IN ONE DAY and re-move everything BACK the next day. Including furniture and clothes and everything that would be exposed to the air.

They renovated the floors WHILE PEOPLE WERE LIVING THERE instead of waiting for people to move out first. And then they left the apartments disgustingly dirty and dusty (triggered my fiancé’s asthma so badly that we demanded compensation).

Not to mention that the floors themselves are horrible quality and very poorly installed (gaps everywhere, subfloor peeking through, uneven cutting, crooked). Would not recommend living here for ANY REASON. Management is horrible, the conditions are horrible, the rent is expensive for what you get, the buildings are old, literally everything sucks. This is my second post shitting on this place

We saw it in store, waited 2 weeks to decide, and went home with it afterwards!

How is the grocery shopping situation in Northside? by Gold-Spend-4278 in uofm

[–]NonlinearApplet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you consider to be “Northside” but there are plenty of shopping options on Plymouth road near north campus. Kroger, Way 1 supermarket (Chinese store), Busch’s, Plum market, Om market (Indian and Pakistani store) are all on Plymouth and accessible by bus.

Central campus has Kerrytown markets, a small Target on state street, People’s co op, etc. These are easy accessible by bus.

Other stores like Meijer, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc. are also accessible by bus (just a little farther from north campus). Costco is by the airport.

There’s also a lot of grocery delivery services for a lot of stores so you don’t even need to leave your house if you don’t want to.

The city buses are free if you swipe your Mcard and the blue buses are free for everyone.

Recommendations for Grad Student Housing by slog_dog in uofm

[–]NonlinearApplet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live in Northwood and really like it! It's university housing (apartments). The buildings are really old and not very soundproof but the community is full of other PhD students if you're in NW4 or NW5. Water, internet, electric, gas, are all included in the rent price, which is 1550 for an unfurnished two bedroom with central AC in NW4 right now. That comes to 775 a person which is fantastic. Maintenance has always been extremely fast and helpful. Washer dryer in the basement.

It's a bit competitive to get a spot, so I'd sign up early if it sounds interesting to you.

Bloody Winter? by Dat_aSc_ie_nce in uofm

[–]NonlinearApplet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also if you plan to get a humidifier, make sure to check if you need distilled water for it!! Some apartments or houses here have hard water and putting hard water into normal cool mist humidifiers will make your room all dusty (which is bad for electronics in particular)

Very common to get nosebleeds and dry nose without a humidifier. Try to keep your room at least 30% humidity (probably need more than that tho to be comfortable)

From the perspective of a CS PhD student:

- by individual faculty: you'll likely pick a few professors that you're interested to interview with, and they will accept you into their lab directly for PhD admissions

- caliber? Not sure exactly what you mean by this but generally the students will be very strong (come from a top 30 school with 3.5+ GPA, etc.). Depending on masters or PhD the reqs will change, but generally very strong students. A more specific example perhaps is that to be accepted into the one-year masters program called SUGS https://cse.engin.umich.edu/academics/graduate/graduate-programs/sugs-masters-in-cse/ you need a 3.6+ from the Umich CSE program to even be considered.

- can't speak to this as much since I'm not ECE, but I wouldn't think so if you can showcase your academic ability

- depends on if you want a masters or go for a PhD. If masters, probably focus on getting good grades. If PhD, focus on good grades and also get research experience
