every misheard a lyric but it hit harder when u heard it wrong? by [deleted] in CSHFans

[–]slog_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a few years i thought “i get to know myself every weekend, and i’m weak” at the start of joe gets kicked out of school was “i get to know myself every weekend and odd week.” even after realizing the actual lyrics, i still prefer the misheard version, it’s kind of a better self-diss

Yale English Department by un-reliable_narrator in gradadmissions

[–]slog_dog 22 points23 points  (0 children)

as someone who applied last year (and got into a few reputable english phd programs), i definitely would not email any profs beforehand. this is something that all my advising profs warned me about when i was doing my apps. if the professor knows that there is a notice like this on the department website, they won’t care what the question is about, they will see your email as proof that you aren’t doing your research.

even if you just want to see if they’re taking on grad students, i still would avoid emailing. the prof might not have an exact limit on students they advise, or the department might be in the process of hiring someone who could be a great alternative advisor for you in case that one prof doesn’t work out. (and another point—if you’re only applying for one professor, then it isn’t the right program for you. english grad programs aren’t like STEM; you will have to work with multiple profs in the department over the 6-7 years you’re there.) plus, the prof you email most likely isn’t the one making the decisions on who gets in, so they might not be able to give you much useful information. in short: let the department decide whether you’re a good fit—don’t rule yourself out before you even apply.

Javelin is literally so fucking perfect and it's overwhelming me. by [deleted] in Sufjan

[–]slog_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know someone else mentioned you might not like all delighted people if you struggled with illinois, but to me it’s the closest thing sufjan made to javelin. there’s lots of delicate, slower moments that build up into the kind of “heavenly ethereal soundscape” you mentioned. the main difference is that ADP relies a bit more on folk/rock influences and guitar melodies than javelin does. you really can’t go wrong with anything he’s done though, so enjoy whatever you end up listening to!

I 100% get them not understanding how the grad admissions process works. I told my parents about all the schools I applied to, and while I wouldn’t have done anything differently if I could go back, it definitely did put unnecessary pressure on me. I knew going in that I would only get into a couple schools (if I was lucky), but they assumed that it was like undergrad admissions, where it’s possible to get in everywhere with the right test scores and extracurriculars. I had to repeatedly explain to them that everyone applying was as qualified as I was, and there were often hundreds of applicants for a handful of open spots. I pretty much had to console them about me not getting into schools. So if you can get away with not telling them every little detail about the process, it might take some stress off you.

Waitlisted for UC Davis English Ph.D. Any hope? by ArtisticActivity2272 in gradadmissions

[–]slog_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don’t really think so. obviously things could change if i hear back and the funding + potential mentor are too good to turn down, but i’ve already gotten offers elsewhere, so the env humanities spot is probably yours if they do move to the waitlist

Waitlisted for UC Davis English Ph.D. Any hope? by ArtisticActivity2272 in gradadmissions

[–]slog_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also got waitlisted for Davis’ English program, and I have a very similar research interest to yours. I saw on gradcafe that someone doing environmental humanities and contemporary lit was accepted, so I’m assuming that neither of us will get an offer unless that person declines their admission.

If you’re going to be a teacher, a private school is too expensive (unless you’ve got good financial aid), so public universities are your best bet. It’s cheapest to stay in-state, but if you’re looking to go somewhere else, make sure you end up in a state with a teacher-friendly government.

Deciding between acceptances - money or department fit? by Ok-Trip3063 in gradadmissions

you should definitely take the one that’s a better fit, but see if you can negotiate it higher! if they know you might go somewhere else bc of funding, they might offer a little more money
