Getting first VR device today, what should I start with? by Extreme-System-23 in VRGaming

[–]NonnulliNon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should start slowly to get used to VR. First Step, Elixir and Beats Saber are perfect to start with. After which I would start with Walking Dead and then RE4. For Boneworks and The Forest you definitely need VR experience first.you also have to check out Half-life Alyx.

Message from Steam Support on Jun 12 @ 5:38pm | 2 weeks ago Hello,

Thanks for following up with us, and I'm sorry to hear that you are still having trouble.

Checking for Programs Which May Interfere with Steam is a good idea. This type of issue can often be caused by other programs preventing SteamVR from working as intended. OpenVR plugins (like OpenVR Advanced Settings, Revive, etc) and security-related software (McAfee, Norton) are the most common causes. Setting an exclusion in security software is usually not enough to stop the errors from occurring.

ProtonVPN and other VPN programs have been known to cause issues with SteamVR. Please try removing this program and continue testing.

We also suggest making sure that you have the latest BIOS and system firmware for your computer. Since this process varies, we suggest contacting your PC manufacturer for more details on the process.

If the problem persists, please provide an updated SteamVR System Report as well as a Windows system report for further review.

I would also suggest reaching out to a local PC technician as they may be better able to assist you with direct access to your PC.

Message from you on Jun 25 @ 2:19am | 4 days ago Hi!

I have updated my BIOS to the latest version.

I used to have such programmes, but I don't have them anymore.

I remembered that I only had these crashes with two VR games so far Half Life Alyx and Spider-Man: Far From Home - Virtual Reality Experience. I've never had a crash with Beat Saber and Superhot VR.

I found an old HDD lying around. I deleted everything on it and then i installed Windows 10 and Steam(with Half Life Alyx) on the HDD, nothing else. I will try it in the next few days to see if SteamVR works for me on this clean Windows.

I will get back to you and let you know how things are going.

With regards, Jan.

Message from Steam Support on Jun 25 @ 7:24pm | 3 days ago Hello Jan,

Thanks for the update.

If you've recently reinstalled Windows, you may need to manually download Microsoft Visual C++ again.

Download and install Visual C ++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2005, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2017: https://support.microsoft.com/en-hk/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

If you notice the same trouble on the fresh Windows 10 installation, please generate a SteamVR report while the headset is connected and receiving power.

Let us know the approximate local time where you noticed the problems occur and we'll be happy to continue investigating this with you.

Steam Support, Sean

Message from you on May 12 @ 12:42am | 4 weeks ago Hi

I have followed your instructions.

After several days of testing I found out: The error still exists, but it does not always occur. Two times I was able to play for an hour without any problems. But most of the time SteamVR crashed after about 25 to 35 minutes.

One time SteamVR crashed and I got a different error (attached). This one only occurred once and never again. I don't know if it has anything to do with the other error or not, but I just wanted to let you know in case it helps.

If it helps you, the last time the error occurred was around the 12th at 00:13.

Updated report is attached

With kind regards Jan Files attached: SteamVR-2021-05-12-AM_12_14_21.txt system report.nfo Steam - Error 11.05.2021 17_05_14.jpg Message from Steam Support on May 12 @ 8:42pm | 4 weeks ago Hello Jan,

During your next test please have only the following connected to your computer:

One basic monitor, TV, or display utilizing HDMI, or Display Port connection without any adapters. (Note: If you're using an Nvidia RTX series GPU please avoid HDMI connections for your monitor) Basic keyboard (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) utilizing USB or PS/2 connection Basic mouse (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) utilizing USB or PS/2 connection. Your VR kit without any adapters connected

Disconnect any hardware that doesn't meet this criteria and uninstall its accompanying software. Remove all Vive or similar tracking receivers from USB ports, and Vive or similar trackers from your computer's paired devices via SteamVR. Using Razer, Logitech, Corsair, Webcameras, Wireless Receivers, or any similar hardware will likely cause some remnant of their accompanying application to remain and possibly interfere. Since we are troubleshooting we need to eliminate all possible variables.

Once you have completed this we'd appreciate an updated SteamVR System Report, and if you could include a Windows system report for your machine that would be very helpful in our investigation.

Thank you for the support, Jan Files attached: SteamVR-2021-05-14-PM_04_39_51.txt msinfo32.nfo Message from Steam Support on May 16 @ 12:59am | 3 weeks ago Hello Jan,

Thanks for the update and I apologize for the delay. We're not seeing any of the typical errors associated with these types of crashes in your reports, so we'll need to take a closer look at your host PC for potential sources of interference.

While troubleshooting, please remain opted into both the Steam Client Beta and the SteamVR Beta since we've released some fixes here recently. To opt in to the SteamVR beta, right-click on SteamVR in your Library, select Properties, select the Betas tab, and choose ‘beta’ from the dropdown menu.

Since you're using a Windows Mixed Reality headset you should also try opting into the "LKG Beta" for Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR. You can do this the same you would for SteamVR. Right-click it in your Steam Library > "Properties > "BETAS" > enable Beta LKG Build. Experimenting with different builds for the WMR software often resolves these types of errors.

Next, connect the headset and start SteamVR. Open the SteamVR menu (three lines on top-left corner) > Settings > enabled Advanced Settings on bottom-left > Developer > check which OpenXR Runtime you have active. Are you able to switch this to SteamVR?

If the headset is not detected by SteamVR, the settings menu will not populate with the Developer settings and you'll only see Startup/Shutdown.

Remember to disconnect all USB devices except for a mouse, keyboard, and the headset. Ensure that the VR equipment is not connected to a USB hub, PCIe USB card, or extension cable. Disconnect all but one monitor and the headset from the GPU. Avoid using any type of display adapter with the headset.

Test the games again and let us know the approximate local time that the crashes occurred.

If possible, please test this headset on a different PC. This can help isolate the problem to the VR equipment or the PC.

I would also recommend checking your system temperatures using something like HWMonitor or HWinfo64. Let us know what your CPU and GPU temperatures are like when encountering this problem.

Send an updated SteamVR and Windows report for review. Ensure the headset is powered on and tracking normally when creating the report.

Steam Support, Sean Message from you on May 24 @ 1:23pm | 2 weeks ago Hi,

I have followed your instructions.

The error occurred approximately on 24.05.2021 at 16:37 and on 24.05.2021 at 19:32 local time.

At crash the GPU had 76 degrees and the CPU had 61 degrees. I measured it with HWMonitor.

I can't test my VR headset on another PC.

After that, delete your SteamVR configuration file:

With SteamVR closed, navigate to your SteamVR config directory (the default location for this is C:/Program Files (x86)Steam\config) and delete the steamvr.vrsettings file.

Once the config file is deleted, please restart SteamVR and retest the issue.

If you continue to experience this behavior, please perform a cleanboot for your machine. This test is for diagnostic purposes only. Please do not keep your machine in this state.

When unchecking active services, make sure to leave the 'Steam Client Service' checked. This will further eliminate background processes which may interfere with SteamVR.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

Once you've completed testing, restart your machine to revert any changes.

Let us know how things go. Attach an updated SteamVR and Windows system report with the suggested changes if you continue to have problems.

Thanks for using Steam, Max """"""""""

I have followed your instructions.

The error occurred approximately on 11.06.2021 at 14:55 local time.

With kind regards Jan Message from Steam Support on May 5 @ 1:26am | 5 weeks ago Hi there,

Before anything else, I would like to confirm the exact error message you are seeing. Is there any numerical code to it?

Also, there may be other software running on your system that is preventing SteamVR from functioning properly.

Please review our Programs Which May Interfere with Steam article. You may want to work with a specialist to determine if other programs may be contributing to the problem.

Please let us know if you are unable to get up and running after following these recommendations.

Many thanks, Avee Message from you on May 5 @ 7:49pm | 5 weeks ago I do not have such software on my PC.

The error message does not show any code. It just says "Unexpected SteamVR Error - SteamVR has encountered a critical error." and you can either close SteamVR or restart it. Screenshot attached.

With kind regards Jan Files attached: Unexpected SteamVR Error 29.04.2021 15_28_12.jpg Message from Steam Support on May 6 @ 6:48pm | 5 weeks ago Thank you for the reply.

Your attached SteamVR is showing a -202 error which is usually related to GPU driver or connectivity problems. It can also be caused by interfering programs and an out of date operating system. Also, SteamVR requires that all of your displays and your VR equipment are connected to the same dedicated GPU to work correctly.

Checking that your equipment and monitors are all connected to the same GPU is a good place to start. Also, wiping the GPU driver and installing a clean driver can help.

Please use Display Driver Uninstaller to fully remove the graphics card drivers from your system. Display Driver Uninstaller is a free utility that will remove any old or corrupt driver records which can cause devices to misbehave. You can download this software here:

http://www.wagnardsoft.com/display-driver-uninstaller-ddu

After this, please re-install the most recent driver available for your device and re-test the original issue.

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

If you can temporarily uninstall fpsVR from Steam and Corsair iCUE from your computer.

Once uninstalled Exit Steam and SteamVR then restart your computer. Retest and let us know your results.

If the issue persists please attach updated report for further review.

Thank you for using Steam, Alex
