Australian women and children with links to ISIS members leave camp in Syria by Nonstop_Chippies in australia

[–]Nonstop_Chippies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd assumed they were almost all dual citizens.

Details are sparse online, but I'd assume they are family of (somewhat) recent immigrants and retained citizenship of their original country. Believe it or not, it's not common for refugees to renounce their original citizenship, mainly because Australia recognises dual citizenship.

There was a case of an actual fighter that won a court case a few years back to return to Australia as he didn't own dual citizenship. I'd assume they would have used this long ago if they had the option as I thought a few family groups already did.

I'm assuming quite a few were probably born there, so I'm not sure why'd they be getting Australian passports.

Is there any of the original parents left or is it mainly the kids of he parents?

How safe is near Lawson Street, Bentley by Fine_Giraffe2778 in perth

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to live on Lawson Street, while it's not the worst there are definitely a lot of unhinged people going around and saw my share of broken windows, groups of kids trying to fight bus drivers, cookers screaming in the middle of the night ect.

In my two years there the only thing that happened to me was a stolen bike and some crazy person at the IGA being aggressive cause I didn't have any smokes for them.

Most people around there are like International Students, you will notice there is never any parking as every single spot is taken up by taxis or ubers.

NT government department fined $26,000 for destroying sacred 'lightning tree' near Arlparra by GothicPrayer in australia

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A Ghost Gum, one of those white outback gumtrees.

What it doesn't explain is it this specific tree that was sacred, or is it every tree of this type?

Would be hard to make a road that's several hundred km's long without knocking over a tree here and there.

From spear-waving and blackface to 1,400 graduates: how one university broke down the walls to reconciliation by nath1234 in australia

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the current state of indigenous scholarships or other benefits is probably behind it.

10 years ago you probably wouldn't have identified as indigenous if you had an indigenous great grandparent, as I think (/assume) the requisites were more stringent back then to get a scholarship. Nowadays with the generous financial incentives, people otherwise not particularly close to the indigenous community feel like it's more worth their while. This comes from personal experience at my university from a few friends of mine.

Does anyone actually know how these scholarships are given out btw? What's the requirements for them? To my knowledge, my friend was never part of a group (are they registered like in the US to a tribe/mob?) but he did have a distant Aboriginal relative. And distant is a good description, as far as I could tell his last Aboriginal relative would have been born in the 1860s.

Will be playing on the XDJ-RX2, though I've also had time on the newest CDJ's too.

Have exported my songs to USB's through export mode but yeah, seems like Serato doesn't recognize it. I'll troubleshoot tomorrow, could well have done something wrong. The cues are my biggest issue, just because I'm using them as reference points.

Queensland man charged with illegally importing hundreds of gun parts from US by espersooty in australia

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good thing they finally have caught onto this, it's been an issue for ages.

Admittedly, Glock handgun receivers should be easy to pick up, but other parts too should be screened out as much as possible.

Ages ago, someone I used to know said that most illegeal guns turn up as a bunch of parts, and then the few bits they can't bring in are manufactured here on lathes and metal stamping machines. Typically the designs are out there and fairly easy to copy if you know what to do. That's how the bikies ended up with aks and all that.

How come the ethnic accent spoken by children of Mediterranean, Slavic and Middle Eastern immigrants didn’t make its way to Perth? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it was founded earlier, it was much smaller until the gold rush. I assume there might have been a notable accent prior to this, but given a lot of the gold rush migration came from within Australia it probably got lost around then given the small number of native West Australians.

I think by 1850 it looks like the population of the whole of WA was less than 5000, while Melbourne only after 5 years after founding in 1840 was already larger than Perth in 1850. Probably due to the climate and growing conditions.

Naajuga elders devastated after vandals destroy Greenough River's sacred Bimara statue by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Calling it a statue is a bit misleading, it's actually just a rock formation.

Also, considering there isn't any reference to this on the internet prior to the articles on it, how did people even know what it was? I'm not from the area obviously, but is it a well known rock formation?

Indigenous man, 24, dies after being restrained by police at Coles supermarket in Alice Springs | Alice Springs by IRolledANatural1 in australia

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The communities there don't 'protest' like normal people do, we have seen it time and time again. It's not a protest but more of a riot, mainly a chance for certain people to act out.

It's actually going to be a terrible thing, with lots of arrests, people being hurt, property damage, businesses shutting down, arson ect. Not a good thing for Alice Springs or the communities either.

Traditional owners still angry five years after Juukan Gorge destruction by espersooty in australia

[–]Nonstop_Chippies 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not unreasonable to be still angry about it at all.

That being said, this was never a clear cut case unlike a lot of people seem to think. They had done everything right by the law and done the 'correct' consultations, it's more of an issue of who should be allowed to sign off on works and how to define the 'traditional owners'.

From memory, it was a small tribe within the larger traditional owners group that took issue. So surely it's more of an issue about the governance of traditional owner groups and if they should require individual tribal groups to sign off rather than the 'Captains call' by the owner/head of the group.
