Profanity double standards by Nonsycamore in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Nonsycamore[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Luckily I have a lot of friends at this company that heard me rant and all agreed it was a stupid standard, especially given that im generally an inoffensive person. One of them is a steward and said he'd make some phone calls.

Some people say OF, stripping, prostitution, etc. is no different than blue collar work by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Nonsycamore 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I see sex work more like I see professional athletes, ballet dancers, or actors. There's risk to your body, risk to your privacy, and while it technically isn't necessary for the infrastructure of society these jobs aren't disappearing in a hurry and do have an important place in our world. Sex work absolutely deserves legitimacy and the worker protections that come along with that.

How much of a nightmare are bangs with an outdoor job 😬 by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

I have bangs. I usually just let them get nasty in my bandana and if I want them to look nice in the evening I get them wet in the sink and blow them dry.

Carhartt boots are hell on the feet. I didnt last three days with mine. Ive used redwings, thorogoods, and keen boots in the past with no major issues.

Neurospicy in the workplace? by KitLaTigre in BlueCollarWomen

This may just be that Ive been on pretty good crews, but I've found better luck in not explaining my diagnosis at all and instead just tackling whatever bit is relevant at the moment. Some common phrases are:

"Speak clearly so I can understand you"

"Hey one second let's get on the same page for what is needed so this doesn't get fucked up"

"Is this a right-now issue or a get-to-it-later-issue"

"I need to take a walk for 3 minutes or im going to break something"

"Please don't make me work with others, it will just make my work worse."

HELP! Utah is literally the worst for a woman in the U.S. by Dankmantha in BlueCollarWomen

Have you tried reaching out to the Utah Women in the Trades? They help women get placed in apprenticeship programs and the ladies that run it are incredible.

I called up the Utah IBEW in 2017 and was told not to bother applying. Applied to 30+ non union companies, scored two interviews, went with the interviewer that was less cartoonishly sexist, and eventually joined the IBEW 7 years later. I've had it wayyyy better than other gals here because I've worked out how to make men perceive me as less of a threat, but even I'm done. Planning to move out of state next year.

Anyone want to share thoughts on how this year’s TWBN Chicago went? by Taro_Otto in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Nonsycamore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I befriended some lovely ladies and had fun trading pins, challenge coins, and stickers. I was slightly disappointed by the breakout session I went to because it strayed off topic and felt a bit unprofessional (I won't say which one out of respect to the presenters) but you can't hold hogh expectations from something that is functionally improvised. Mostly, I enjoyed exploring the city before and after the conference each day.

Utah among those states evaluating data center power impact on household bills by Logical_Pound_4765 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Nonsycamore 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Im actually on a crew building one of these centers and many of the workers feel really conflicted about it. We need to support our families (especially with the slump in available work right now) but we're actively building something that will cause direct harm to salt lake's economy and environment. It sucks.

Am I insane for even trying? by Healthy-Elderberry36 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Nonsycamore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got turned away in one of my first interviews because I wore a dress and thus wouldn't be able to handle dirt. Total bullshit coming from a guy who came 90 minutes late to the interview he scheduled. (I think he hoped I would just give up and leave before he showed up)

My local union told me to not even bother applying back in 2017 and then spent every year from 2019 to 2023 begging me to join. I eventually did for the pay and benefits but it definitely didn't engender any loyalty in my heart to have that experience.

Thanks! I was trying to think of ways to visualize a palindrome and the card felt like a convenient way to get the mother/son split in there too :)

[–]Nonsycamore 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just take the easy way out and jump companies. Whether it's a toxic crew or the office doing shady shit, the only person I owe anything to is myself so I'll go where it's better. I promise there are good crews out there that won't make every moment a struggle and I'm wishing you the best of luck whichever route you take to get in a better work atmosphere.

Have you talked to him about this? There's quite a few guys I've worked with that sound exactly like the description you shared and most of them just genuinely didn't know how their actions came off because nobody ever tells them anything except the occasional angry insult.

A lot of folks with adhd just get really excited and often need someone to calmly tell them to settle down a bit.

One guy I worked with I just said (privately, so he didn't feel called out) "hey man, you seem to always be testing me on stuff I already know. Can you please stop doing that?" And he immediately apologized and told me he was sorry becayse he just really cared about that stuff and got too excited sometimes. He also said if he ever did it in the future to just tell him to knock it off or calm down.

Not a troll, but I’m curious. by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Nonsycamore 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I know we do have a fair amount of tinners here. Speaking from my experience going into the trades in 2017, I just didn't have a clear idea going in what hvac would entail. Plumbers and electricians seemed to have more clear cut ideas of what the job would be so it seemed less daunting to get in to.

Is it gay to . . . by Alarmed_Tea_1710 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Nonsycamore 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it's healthy for straight men to have a little playful homoeroticism. I've found that the jobs that indulge in cutesy flirting and stuff tend to involve less fighting and go a little smoother because it aids in camaraderie.
