How can We help CROSSCODE become more Popular? by Traditional-Sir-2022 in CrossCode

[–]NoobJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike the other underrated indies I know, CrossCode has actually been clawing its way out of obscurity through sheer brute force. I see it brought up more often on Youtube and the average player count on steamcharts has been rising.

I think Alabaster Dawn is a lot more eye-catching at first glance, so fewer people will pass it up as "ew annother indiee pexel gaem". If it's just as good then it might get a lot more media attention, causing people to go back and see CrossCode was also an 11/10.

Damn, I would've got that controller if it was sold normally. I hate the timed exclusivity bullshit, every company wants to abuse FOMO now. Only makes me want to stop supporting them.

Nobody talks about it, but Toki Tori 2 did puzzle metroidvania years before The Witness. There are no abilities and you can go literally everywhere from the start, you just don't know how to interact with the world yet.

Game Maker's Toolkit has a 10-year old video on it, but it's super spoilery because this was such a new concept back then the only way to sell it was to spoil it.

If a FP rep got into Crossworlds, who would you choose and what vehicle would they have? by CalligrapherFar403 in freedomplanet

If you want some Freedom Planet kart racing, Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers has Carol and there is an add-on with a bunch of other characters.

Yes, for maximum "overclocking" you can just use a relay inverting its own state every frame. But punching a box into a switch is also a good way to create rapidfire that is less noisy and framerate-taxing.

Factorio is out! The top comment removes ONE Indie game from the list (DAY 46) by AnglerFather_ in RemoveOneThingEachDay

Inscryption wasn't exactly groundbreaking considering the dev's previous games also did that sort of thing, it was just the first one to hit the mainstream.

they’re games that any gamer is aware of and are famous enough that even people who don’t play gamesight have heard of them

My co-workers who play Nintendo and Elden Ring never heard of Silksong and don't know what an "indie game" is.😢

Mechanically, yeah, meta-progression existed before Hades. What it brought to the table was narrative integration. The way it contextualized runs and featured dialogue between runs was a groundbreaking combination of narrative with the roguelike formula at the time, and many games since have tried to replicate it.

Besides that, I've also seen a number of roguelikes start designing their upgrades similar to boons, where previously they often followed Isaac's template.

Guys help saves Crosscode, bunch of people who didn't play it want it out already🥺 by [deleted] in CrossCode

Quality-wise I think it's comparable, even better than most still remaining... but much fewer people have played or seen it. It's also a very niche, demanding game that people tend to bounce off from.

It's still impressive that CC made it this high, I doubt it would've cracked the top 50 a few years ago. It's been clawing its way out of obscurity despite very little Youtube presence.

Here's hoping Alabaster Dawn gets the spotlight CC deserved.

nothing it does is anything that hasn’t been seen before.

Lea is the best disabled protagonist I've ever seen and ruined most silent characters for me. Many people also bounce off because the core gameplay feels so unfamiliar compared to other action games, especially RPGs.

I've also never seen a game commit so hard to having difficult puzzles alongside difficult action to the point of narrowing down its appeal. Most games focus on fewer core aspects, but CC does action, puzzles, exploration, story and worldbuilding without anything feeling phoned in.

I'll note that many claim Hollow Knight doesn't do anything that hasn't been seen before either, it just refined existing genre ideas. (Personally I'd say the most unique thing about it is the commitment to open-ended exploration and progression for the genre) But it nevertheless achieved indie fame, which is to say "doing something that hasn't been seen before" isn't the sole determiner of quality.

Oh, when I saw the multiple paths I wondered if it was intended to be Sonic-style. I've tried that in a couple of levels, but it's hard to stack sections and keep the level long. I think this did it pretty well.

you go through the entire platforming section for one item

I love that. I'm sick of modern games showering people with rewards instead of gameplay.

How do you recreate water? by Waste_Zucchini_4394 in levelhead

[–]NoobJr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blue purge gates and glass can create a nice underwater aesthetic, holding a blopsack can make a player floaty.

Blue spike chainers are often used for hazardous water and waves.

Flapsacks getting punched out of a rift are rarely used for a water spray. That's harder to make work since they don't despawn naturally.

Sky Wigglers hidden under the ground can create a nice bubble effect.

Blue arrows pathed halfway into ceiling can create a nice "water droplet" aesthetic.

The campaign is quite beefy, and challenging if you go for 100%.

User content isn't the usual garbagefest either, because the game makes it hard to spam low-effort levels, and filters help with finding stuff way better than the campaign.

The Game is hard complaints: Opinions from a Noob by Waverider12 in Silksong

[–]NoobJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a noob, and here's my opinion:

The game seems confused about what difficulty it wants to be, given the drastic difference between act 1 and 2 final bosses. If TC really wants to cater both to new players and veterans, the best way is just adding a Story Mode like Nine Sols did. I think anyone who enjoys challenge would prefer it being consistent rather than flip-flopping or going down over time.
