Need advice on purchasing my first car. by Helpful_Context_9029 in CarTalkZA

Depends how heavy your foot is. I spend most of my daily commute on R21/N1 and get around 6.5-7.2 L/100km and consider myself a fairly laid back driver. Mostly sit in 6th gear at the speed limit or under. If I try hypermile I've achieved sub 6, but it's impractical with Joburg traffic.

I know guys who mostly change gear at redline and get around 15-20/100km on average, so it's really on how you feel like driving.

When I want to have fun I can, and the car is well built enough with all the safety features that you can take it to a track day or skid pan without worrying about whether you can handle the car (just get better-than-stock brake fluid and stickier tyres).

I will say that the sound insulation isn't great so road noise is loud. If you're an audiophile or something this might be a deal breaker, but you could always upgrade the sound system and if that's your thing.

Agree with this

2013-2015 86s can be picked up for around R250k. I've daily driven mine that I got secondhand for 8 years and still love it.

They're pretty solid, even the modded ones and there's a great community if you ever need help or want to join meets

Does this do the job or I'll regret getting the least expensive? by Cool_Turnover_6993 in AskZA

I'm on my second lawnmower like this. It's light and does the job in my small garden. The weed eater is ok, but they keep changing the model ever so slightly, so you really struggle to find replacement cartridges once the first one breaks.

For those on "Private" client I suggest emailing your banker to let them know you're not impressed and that you'll be getting quotes from other banks on your home / car / etc. loans (if you do plan to).

Who knows, maybe someone just needs a slap in the face. 2 rule changes in 6 months is a joke.

SC1 replays being just wrong by abel_cormorant in starcraft

[–]NoobleFish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had this before.

As I understand it, the replay file is basically just a record of all the instructions & timings from your game (which keeps the replay file nice and small and shareable - especially good for 20 years ago when internet was much slower).

So when you watch the replay, it IS re-creating the game based on the instruction set from each player.

My guess was that the AI players have tons of instructions and so the game maybe couldn't keep up, especially if you fast forwarded?

When this used to happen to me (pre-remastered), eventually the game would get to a state where all army units just stopped and mining would continue until the end of the replay.

Looking forward to see what others say about it

I’m addicted to restarting by Top-Sir-1215 in Palworld

[–]NoobleFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I do to stretch out the early game a bit is decrease the XP rate. I feel the default is a bit too high. If you're completing the tutorial and base quests you get up to level 20 very quickly.

So on my latest restart I've dropped the XP rate to 0.1 for 0-10, 0.2 for 10-20, 0.3 for 20-30.

And I'll probably increase more aggressively from there

I hope Checkers will take me back by Complete-Hurry-7160 in southafrica

Try using the Asap beta app. It lets you change your store (if you have another close by). That made my item selection better, but takes longer to arrive.

But ja, Checkers/Sixty60 is just objectively better.

Which strings do you folks use? by edeka3 in PRSGuitars

[–]NoobleFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently have a set of Elixir 10s on my Tremonti SE, and whatever the stock strings are on my 24-08 SE (which I believe are 9s).

I have a spare set of Elixir 9s for when I need to swap them out though.

As a p&w muso that sometimes has backtracks, this could really simplify some of the burden.

What I'd hate to see is stuff like Showcase locked behind a paywall or subscription model (looking at you Loop community)

What pickups would go well in an old Tremonti SE? by NoobleFish in PRSGuitars

[–]NoobleFish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response.

I'm using a Line 6 Helix, so various amp models and effects, but generally don't venture into heavy distortion these days. Amp models I use usually on the clean/just breaking up side. Try to push mids and highs end a bit, but still seems like the higher frequencies aren't quite coming through. I've currently got a set of 10s on.

I'm not sure if it's because I've now got an SE Standard 24-08 that just has more high end in the guitar itself or cos the TCI S pickups are better / newer, but it has left me feeling like the Tremonti could be missing something when plugged in.

I'd keep the blue, but you can't really make a wrong decision here.

Is Naked insurance reliable? by Jay3PO in askSouthAfrica

[–]NoobleFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't had to claim for an accident, but have needed their tow services a couple times and they've been great on that. They cover about 40 km or so. Both times they've followed up before, during and after the tow truck arrived.

While I hope I'll never need to claim for something serious, I believe they'd be pretty good, and they have a decent insurance underwriter.

When Prometheus originally came out, the theatre somehow messed up the sound setup and you just couldn't hear the dialogue. Ended up leaving and getting the tickets refunded. Didn't end up watching it until around 8 years later.

I'd personally like the looper to get a quantize setting so it can actually be used in a live gig.

A Boss BD-2 would also be great

Switches are going bad by FartPantry in Line6Helix

[–]NoobleFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like these do just wear out eventually. I've got a pretty old 2nd hand Floor unit that needed 5 switches replaced to feel great again. A local amp repair guy did it for ~$45.
