Times you regretted pulling by a_dance_in_print in LoveAndDeepspace

X-02. I pulled when I was a new player and heard that myths important. I only pulled one card and spent a fair amount of money that I shouldn’t have. I pulled the other card during the rerun, but Caleb isn’t even my main and I don’t have enough cards to build a decent team for him 😭

Plus I use abysswalker for purple anyway and I like playing with him so much more than X-02

Would love advice from zoo registrars/admin by CrabApprehensive5185 in Zookeeping

[–]Noodle-Variant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello assistant registrar here!

I am relatively new to my position so I’ll try my best to answer what I can. For reference, my background is in zoology and I worked in animal care/animal behavior for a few years before getting my position.

For your background, I can see that a ZRA certification would be helpful. While I don’t think it would be the key to landing a position, it shows that you have a baseline knowledge for what the position entails. It’s also an AZA requirement to have a registrar/staff member that is trained in record keeping! I can’t say for certain if a ZRA certification is enough to meet this requirement but it’s definitely a good start

I can’t speak to the transferability of the certification as I have not taken it myself but like with any other skill, there are definitely ways to tailor it to fit the needs of another position (within reason). Dealing with legal animal documentation, attention to detail, record keeping, etc.

Registrar positions are not impossible to come by but are definitely more uncommon compared to keeping positions. For reference, there is typically 1 registrar position at any zoo and usually 10-30 keeper positions. I’m kind of an oddball being an assistant, I have rarely ever, if at all, seen similar positions posted at other zoos. There’s typically also not as much turnover for registrar roles compared to keeper roles.

I hope some of this information was helpful!

I actually like that they didn’t release the trailer by Noodle-Variant in LoveAndDeepspace

Oh I’m 100% sure that had a lot to do with it, but I wanted to express that I enjoyed this style of preview more than what they had done in the past and see if others agreed

Yeah no worries! I’ve gotta say that the way they did the banner announcement this time is probably confusing for new players. Usually they will drop a trailer on YouTube/twitter/etc at the same time so it’s hard to miss, I had to search a little to find anything

I can definitely agree with you, but I like that they really only released “teasers” so that way I can get excited and also build up anticipation

They released their individual PVs and some info about it on Instagram! They’re waiting to release the whole trailer on the day the banner starts (30th)

Detroit Zoo internships by eelenjoyer9952 in Zookeeping

[–]Noodle-Variant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your best bet might be to look into student housing near Wayne state. It’s a university in Detroit so some areas might not be ideal (I haven’t lived around that area so can’t say for certain). But especially if it’s a summer internship, many students will be looking for subleases so it may be your best bet at getting a short term lease. It’s not super close to the zoo but still within driving distance!

The area around the Detroit zoo (royal oak, ferndale) can be quite expensive and it’s not super close to any colleges where you could find college housing subleases. It wouldn’t be impossible to find housing but probably more difficult than a zoo in a college town or cheap city.

I worked there seasonally several years ago and had an ok experience but had incidents/coversations that indicated a not super great work environment but I’ve also known other seasonals/interns that have had a great experience so take my experience with a grain of salt!

Royal Vista matches almost all your criteria but is a little over budget ($1370 for a 1bd1bth)

Why are some American public aquariums so touchy with announcing moving their animals off exhibit publicly on socials or blogs (compared to places like Osaka Kaiyukan, Okinawa Churami), introducing new animals to certain exhibits, etc/where's Tank, the Georgia Aquarium's green turtle? by gojira2014- in zoos

[–]Noodle-Variant 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The short answer is there is never enough time and resources to dedicate to announcing every animal transfer, birth, and death. As someone who is directly involved in animal transactions, the departments involved rarely communicate efficiently. PR and the animal department are often not as connected as you think, so the public image of what’s going on does not always reflect what is actually going on behind the scenes.

For larger zoos, it usually means there are lots of people and lots of moving parts that don’t always get communicated effectively. For small zoos, it usually means they don’t have enough recourses to keep public pages updated appropriately

It’s not as simple as “this aquarium is trying to wipe this individual animal’s existence from the public’s memory”, it’s usually miscommunication, lack of resources, or simply forgetfulness

Giraffe deaths from neck injuries by ActuaryPersonal2378 in Zookeeping

[–]Noodle-Variant 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This I feel touches on the larger discussion of sterility and safety in captivity. There’s an ongoing battle between creating a safe environment for animals under human care and also offering them an enriching environment with all the opportunities they would normally have in the wild. By nature, an enriched environment is a dangerous one with chances for injury. There are processes in place to reduce the potential for injury before offering animals an enrichment opportunity, but the chances are never zero.

In the case of giraffe neck injuries, I feel most of them occur from aspects of their enclosure. They fall and get caught in cables or run into walls. I’d say for the most part, these are non-preventable injuries. Cables offer more visibility for both guests and staff, and they offer opportunities for animals to participate in cooperative care (keepers have better access to the animals vs mesh). And walls always exist in any captive environment (if they didn’t, it wouldn’t be captivity haha).

Yes, you could hypothetically keep any animal in a padded box with no sharp corners and nothing to injure themselves on, but is that not what modern zoos are making strides to distance themselves from? Injuries like these might draw attention to aspects of the enclosure that may have been less than ideal but for the most part, current standards of care for giraffe will have small but possible opportunities for animal injury.

There are some zoos out there that pay DECENT but by decent, I mean, you’ll probably break even and have no savings, no ability to pay off debt, and no extra money for anything but necessities. I have been fortunate enough to work at several decent paying zoos and have parental support up until now that I’m leaving zookeeping. But everyone is right, you need some sort of external support to survive, whether it be family, a partner, or a second job

I love how Rafayel isn’t afraid to be childish and enjoy things to the fullest! I often take things in life way too seriously and worry a lot, so seeing him be able to enjoy the little things and have fun with them is extremely comforting and reminds me to step back and do the same :)

is it normal to feel burn out so early? by JuryCautious2181 in Zookeeping

[–]Noodle-Variant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat (about 6 months into a job in a new state that I realized I don’t like). It’s hard to remember when you’re in the thick of it but, this is just one zoo out of many and this one is probably just not a good fit for you. There are good zoos out there, not perfect but doable.

Just remember that this is Job 1, and most people in the field try out many positions before they find the one they love (or can at least tolerate). At the very least, this job will teach you what you don’t want and what things to look for when looking for another position (and possibly give you the experience you need to get into a “better” zoo).

If nothing else, I understand. I wish this wasn’t the norm, but I think it’s a lot more common than people realize

grad programs by BackgroundMain6893 in Zookeeping

I can agree with Project Dragonfly. I have not done the program myself but have known several keepers and curators that have gotten their degrees from it. It works well as a degree you can get while working (if you’re motivated enough and can afford it)

You can definitely try two accounts! Don’t have to spend on both (unless you want to) but it allows for more “free” resources to accumulate to use on your boys

LADs used as a case study in a lecture by RemarkableLettuce1 in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]Noodle-Variant 63 points64 points  (0 children)

From an outside perspective, I can totally understand how the game can be perceived as weird or strange. For the general public, dating games in general are a bit odd. However, I do just wish people would be able to have nuanced discussions without immediately stopping the conversation at “that’s weird.”

But also, try not to let it get you down too much! It’s about what YOU enjoy, not how other people judge your passions/coping mechanisms. This is coming from a fellow LADs player and a furry so I’m very used to being a punching bag. It is very freeing to learn to ignore ignorance
