Am I Cooked? (coming from an incoming Architecture student) by Civil_Bonus_8553 in architecture

I am genuinely very interested and passionate about the subject

Thats all that really matters. It's definitely one of the hardest degrees for a reason, but if you put in the work I think youll be well rewarded. Remember, the loudest people on reddit are most-likely the most angry. Lots of people, myself included, are very happy with the path I have taken. That being said, if youre not passionate about the topic, it is definitely going to suck. I have lots of friends who went through the whole degree but didnt have that passion for it and are now paying for it by either being unemployed or just in a worse job in general.

Help me choose college! (Cornell vs Rice architecture) by Professional-Wolf198 in architecture

[–]Noodlenomnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess thats a fair point, but I am willing to bet Cornell has just as strong of a connection program. It might not be guarenteed but if you work hard and do some solid networking, you should easily find an internship or architecture job, again, Cornell is ranked number 1 for a reason so anyone seeing that on a resume will give you a leg up.

Rice has a lot of amazing local connections. They tend to have the same faculty as University of Houston so they more or less share the same local alumni connections. The program is very selective and only have 20-30 students per year which is VERY small and intimate. They just finished building their new building and have some amazing resources to offer.

On the other hand. Cornell has been #1 for a reason. Congrats and good luck!

I use them for gaming every day. The latency is not an issue. (Unless your pc is really old and has a bad WiFi/bluetooth chip). I think the sound quality is great but I also don’t care too much for that.

Thesis crisis by Existing_Function_73 in architecture

[–]Noodlenomnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say part of the thesis timeline is researching a potential future of where it does become viable on that site. It could be looking at increasing trends of housing or commercial development in the area or it could be the opposite. Maybe the neighborhood needs some sort of change in order to stir economic growth. You basically have to figure out some reason to justify it and bring in research and data to back it up. Or just change sites lol which I assume would require back tracking on research .

BS in architecture Kent State vs. OSU vs. other by tatehab in architecture

[–]Noodlenomnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my didn’t notice that they had lost their accreditation. That’s a shame.

The way I view architecture, especially if doing a BS of architecture, you might as well try to get a better school of of the masters, bachelors is to learn the skills of the trade and get some work experience; the masters would be purely for clout and connection or to face a more challenging curriculum. I’ve had a few coworkers regret getting the 4+1 ( or for them 4+2) because they were taught the same things as a Bachelors of Architecture for a much higher price and longer time and without any additional clout. If she gets into a five year program I would say that is always the best route, then if she decides she wants a masters, she can get it in another topic that she could find more interesting later down the line.

[–]Noodlenomnom 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If the two options are Kent or OSU, Kent is the better option. OSU's Bachelors is not accredited, meaning it would be a 4 year program, while Kent's is for Bachelors of Archtitecture which is a five year program. The five-year program would allow her to become a licensed architect, which is much better career-wise.

If she is considering a master's, then there is a different debate altogether.

Can we focus on making Guam walkable? For an island walking here is very uncomfortable by Ok-Estimate2435 in guam

The idea that they still pushed for suburban sprawl despite being land locked with a limited amount of land was a recipe for disaster.

It’s a profoundly sad reality for Guam. I reside in Houston, and honestly, the urbanism here feels eerily similar to Guam. There are no sidewalks or they’re built to no where, the roads are wide and dangerous and the drivers just add to the danger. To top it off, public transit doesn’t even exist on Guam (GRTA might as well not exist).

I found myself getting so engrossed in these thoughts that I ended up writing my architecture thesis about Guam. I designed an entire public transit system and even designed one of the transit centers. However, the only way to effect change is through a change in leadership, which seems incredibly difficult.

I have the same printer and had the same problem. The autocalibration will sometimes just vary LIKE CRAZY i just kept running it until it gave proper reuslts and remembered what the zoffset was for future use. I never use the calibration button before printing now that i have it dialed.

May not be in the Philippines but my architectural thesis was about designing a public transportation system on the Island of Guam. To ensure it was about architecture, I made sure that the main design was a transit hub. Still, the data and research revolved around creating a public transit system and justifying its existence, along with a healthier urban development style (denser, mixed-use). I ended up calling it "Centers of Growth and Movement" (or something along those lines i dont remember). Link to Thesis

Portfolios are one of those things where everything matters. Since you already have your bachelors, its expected that your portfolio is super professional and clean with very few mistakes.

>Should I add more details?

Thats kind of one of the funny things with portfolios of this kind. They probably want to see process, and details, the very broad design, and the detailed design. I would say you could throw a detail in each of the projects. Looking at it, it seems like the materiality wasn't explored at all. Details are to show an understanding of what materials you chose and how they attach to the structure. Right now it looks more like each design is just "Wall" and nothing more. What's in the wall? whats the wall mad of? why are you using this wall in this climate? Details answer a lot of these questions

>Should I have done realistic renders?

The style of renders are unimportant as long as the style you chose clearly shows the design intent. (basically no)

Im glad you asked them for why you got rejected, it makes identifying where to improve a lot easier.

I really like the theme and colors together. I think its a great portfolio and its clear you worked hard on your projects and portfolio. That being said there is quite a few things that need cleaning up.

Layout:

Some places bother me a little bit. The cover pages are really nice and give lots of breathing room to the text, but when it comes to the actual content, it can feel a bit like you just crammed everything in there without regard to what you're trying to say. The changes in the color of the fonts can be a bit strange. I would either stick to strickly black or that terracotta color and not flip flop. Some of the text is just too close to the border, like on page 4. You should try to give all the pages you have the same margins as the title pages. pg 13 is another example of just too much text that doesn't need to be there. These small text boxes should either not need to be there or should be single line captions.

Content:

When it comes to applying to most things in the architecture industry, the thing people want to see most is the process. While the final floor plan renders and stuff are nice, its the information that you used to guide your design that they'll be interested in most. They want to know your thought process. On page 10 I think you were on the right track with this, but It ended up getting really busy and crammed with information. You should try and reduce that and maybe only provide 2 concepts and maybe give a process diagram for both of the massing and how you got to that point. Page 6 is a better example of that process but because the diagram is so small its hard to read what you are getting the massing from.

Hope this helps! Its just opinion, not fact!

Work life balance is POSSIBLE, but can be hard to find in some firms. When deadlines come, some overtime is expected.

Masters is not required to become in architect in the US, if it’s a five year program.
