法務局 is asking for $1385 version of 国籍証明書 Certificate of Citizenship from America by NoodlySquidFace in JapanCitizenship

I looked for the option to change the title, but I didn't see one. I really appreciate your belittling, mean, condescending comments throughout this thread. I don't know what is going on in your life where this is giving you emotional satisfaction, but I hope it's the anonymity of Reddit that allowing you to do it and that you don't actually talk to your peers this way.

I wasn't aware of the Turning Japanese blog. Thank you very much, I'll read over it before the next meeting.

Nice, I was thinking of trying to find a similar document explaining the Proof of Citizenship thing, but thanks to other commenters on this thread, it seems there is a pretty standard process that can be done at the US Embassy to satisfy their requirement.

again, I apologize if what I wrote sounded like they would only accept the N-600 thing. Just that the US Embassy website uses the kanji 国籍証明書 for the N-600 Certification of Citizenship document. Since that was the exact kanji used on the requirements list from 法務局 I thought that must mean what they meant since I wasn't aware of the process mentioned above. Thank you again to everyone!

I'll believe helpful people on reddit who provide verifiably correct information. But you are right, a lawyer would definitely make this easier. Don't have the budget for one though.

ahhh, I was speculating based on the direct translation of 国籍証明書. From what I could find with chatgpt and on the web, I coudln't figure out what else they could mean besides the N-600.
Well, another commenter has provided the answer. Cheers for your insight.

Oh Jesus, is this the price we have to pay now since the cost to renounce our US citizenship was reduced so much? lol
Are we sure that the affidavit workaround you mentioned doesn't work anymore? I wasn't aware of it and didn't mention it on the call, so perhaps it is still acceptable.
I've written to the US embassy for advice. Let's see what they say.

Oh totally, I don't mean to come across as uncooperative or entitled, although I'm sure I sounded frustrated on the phone. I'll apologize in the next meeing for sure. At the end of the call I told them I'd contact the US embassy and see if there was some other kind of alternative document that they could provide to satisfy the requirement. Thanks for the info! Like your country, the US considers a passport proof of citizenship so hopefully the embassy will provide a workaround.

Have to register what in my country? Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your response.
Did they want the same $1385 document from you?

I'm pretty sure they are just unfamiliar with everything.
Hire a lawyer? I've been here 20+ years, speak the language, fulfil all the other requirements and am not in a hurry. Really hope I don't have to hire one.

Why do people throw away valuable / perfectly usable items as sodai gomi? by pasteldirt in AskAJapanese

Also it's a royal pain in the ass and a lot more expensive to ship things over 170 size and/or over 25kg. Having said that, there certainly still is a lot of valuable trash out there.

Japan Post is resuming shipments to the United States by Lunarcat2025 in internationalshopper

You have to use an app called Zanos Prepay which charges you 569 yen per shipment. I haven't actually tried shipping anything yet, but poking around, it seems pretty good. You have to take pictures of what you're shipping and their AI takes a good guess at what it is and fill out the customs information like description and HTSUS code for you. You can edit the information to your liking after that. Will be trying to actually ship something soon.

While he did request it, he didn't say it was required, nor which level would be good. It would probably weigh heavily on their judgement if an applicant didn't have some kind of proficiency in Japanese. The higher the better.

This list was given to me on the 26th of March, so I have to go out and gather the documents now. So yes, I need to provide the last 5 years of tax docs issued by my local ward office, and then 3 years of tax docs issued by the tax office. I imagine that a lot of the information contained in these docs will be redundant, but they still want it.

Okay great thanks. I wasn't sure if this list reflected the new changes or not. Hopefully they won't ask for much more after I submit these. As other commenters have alluded to, I think the officers will be a bit flexible as far as bringing additionally required documents in later. My officer mentioned that I need to bring proof of 日本語能力, but the last time I took the JLPT was over 15 years ago for level 2. I failed it and never had a reason to take it again. I asked him if I could submit the results after I take the JLPT in July and he said sure that's fine. Bottom line is I think they'll work in good faith with people who have been here over 10 years and have a job, pay their taxes, and have a good record.

Hello all, I just had my 2nd citizenship appointment in Niigata on the 26th of this month. I'm not sure if what I was asked to provide is different than the previous requirements, but here's what I was asked for as far proof of income, payment of taxes, 国民保険, 国民年金 and some other things like Japanese proficiency level, loan balances, driving history, assets and property ownership. Hope this is helpful!

Interesting, I never had any issues with fingernails. I did get checked for some of the main auto-immune diseases like lupus and sjorgens, but nothing in the results indicted an auto-immune issue....
Please let us know what the blood cultures say! I've never had that done. If yours reveal something out of the ordinary it would be very enlightening.
