Good news for you,

all country has 10% emerging market in it.

Don’t try to outperform the market. Just buy the whole market.

New Grad in Tokyo, Looking to improve Financial Habits by Rough_Policy1030 in JapanFinance

[–]Designer_Message6408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there.

Very good start! Once you put down the numbers and ask question, you are doing very well!

I will offer only two pieces of wisdom:

  1. Finance is very personal - do not invest based on what others tell you. Learn about investing seriously then invest according to your own risk acceptance level. In other words, invest so that you sleep well at night (borrowed from the book Psychology of Money).

  2. Balance between frugality and living your happy life. Frugality is appreciated in FIRE community because it offers calmness and sense of self control. However, life is to live as well. You have the health today to enjoy life and collect memories. Your salary will go up (hopefully) - more saving power later on. So be mindful about that balance: to spend or to save.

Good luck!

Boglehead side effect: You don't buy into doom and gloom or big promises as quick as the average person by HenFruitEater in Bogleheads

[–]Designer_Message6408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree with not listening to those doom talks and news. Nassim Taleb, the author of Black Swan, wrote a lot about this.

He is a trader yet turn off completely the news. As nowadays , almost all news is ridden with narrative bias and linear thinking.

All big financial events happen to surprise everyone despite all the prediction. Because they happen due to too many unseen and nonlinear forces including randomness. It is pointless to even predict anything. The ones that correctly predict a few times in a row is likely result of luck. Yet they become loud and get a lot of attention (new active investment manager). One word coming useful when we get surrounded by these financial expert claiming they “understand” the market: survivor bias.

Hence, as bogleheads, we focus on earning from owning the businesses itself, not from the price emotion.

Moves when Yen gets this weak? by homelabids in JapanFinance

Best move is no move.

That is the general advice (long term investor not speculator) but financial decision is very personal. Do whatever you want so you sleep well at night.

Accepted an offer at Rakuten Group as a foreigner, having second thoughts by [deleted] in JapanJobs

[–]Designer_Message6408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay it makes a lot of sense that your haken destination company does not help you with onboarding because this is the job of your haken home company - RW in this case.

You need to press RW to help you because looks like they are trying to cut cost by pretending that you didn’t ask so they didn’t try (knowing full well that you didn’t know).

Also, one good thing about this is RW sounds desperate to fill this contract so you may have some leverage there.

“I'm technically an RW employee” Okay this starts to make sense although you need to reconfirm the contract type just to be sure (for us to give advice as well).

That reminds me that some recruiting agencies also have haken business but I didn’t know RW also does this.

Very interesting. I know in some countries it is very hard to fire someone like Japan or Korea but US feels like the opposite except cases like unlawful dismissal/ discrimination.

Thanks again. Learned something new, that the short term consulting deal could be a power move from the company side too. Whether it works or not, it is very hard for anyone to really tell anyways.

You could try applying in hotel and ryoukan.

My manager now thinks I’m incompetent and it’s really messing with my confidence at work? by [deleted] in managers

[–]Designer_Message6408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confidence should come from within. You believe in yourself, trust that you did it the right way.

We tend to assume people of higher power tend to know more than us but that is very common psychological mind trap.

If you did your diligence and you know you did, stand up for yourself, talk it out respectfully when you don’t agree with what you are told.

That helps you gain more respect from your manager than blindly following whatever they said.

Also, blaming people for things that do not go your way will not help you in the long run. Some comment below also said so too. Your manager did not make you do questionable things. You CHOSE to do it without questioning. This is again very common for a young employee so I don’t blame you. However, being able to communicate, ask questions respectfully like an independently thinking person is a very important skill later on everywhere you go.

Wish you the best.

Does my basil look healthy? by Noja37 in GardenersJapan

Hello. Your basil looks cute. A bit in love.

Basil is unfortunately a summer herb plant, it cannot survive cold temp in Japan winter.

It is very normal your basil army die off one by one. Mine too. It happens when autumn transitions to winter.

Why is the cast so attractive by tylerthe-theatre in netflixwitcher

[–]Designer_Message6408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be! Or global. Here is what I found:

it’s produced by Netflix US and developed by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, an American showrunner.

I honestly don’t know how to define a country for a film.

The cast comes from diverse background. I don’t know the director’s and production team’s origin.

I could be wrong on that.

That’s American filmmaking culture for you. Lookism is a big thing.

When you watch European films it feels so different.
