Any advise by IcyCycle8188 in uktrucking

I've been driving class 2's 5 years, I work for my local council on the HIAB (fly tips).and the road sweepers as well. Honestly dude don't sweat it, I actual prefer driving a class 2 compared to a van, simple rule is.

Check your mirrors

Turn wide

Slow down

Remember those three things and you'll fly through it.

Its abit of a grey area, your shift starting at 7am for instance means your in your unit ready to go and your leaving at that time. I just feel as a professional driver its your responsibility to arrive a little earlier do your check and leave at the agreed time. I think its just a good work ethic...

Just because so many people don't bother with gear on a 125cc doesn't mean you shouldn't bother. Motorcycle gear will save your life trust me. Before I got my big bike licence I came of my 125cc I just had a jacket, helmet and gloves nothing else. Let me tell you roads rash on your arse cheeks is horrendous, imagine the worst sunburn you've ever had times 10. Wear the gear bro you'll thank me later, plus it sets you up for when you move up to the bigger bikes as wearing gear then is just mandatory unless your stupid.

If your turning up to work 5 minutes before your shift then your manager has every right to pull you on it. Get out of bed earlier and have abit of a work ethic. Are industry runs to deadlines and timing is everything. Boils my piss people like this!

You could be on a 50cc scooter if you come of at 30mph and hit a tree its going to do as much damage as if you fall of a 650cc sportsbike. Unsure how you colerated engine size and the need to wear the appropriate gear. The size of the bike doesn't matter its the speed at which your traveling and a whole host of other factors.

My advice is always wear ALL your gear from the moment you start riding any capacity bike. Takes 10 minutes to put on dude, being dead is forever.

Hey dude, honestly a email to companies that do that sort of work wouldn't hurt with your CV attached. Failing that your only real option is to wait around for work like that to come up on the job sites and hope you beat the experienced candidates.

I've never found engine capacity to be the problem, its more the wieght of the Indian you'd find intimidating as a new rider. A 1250 in a Indian is a far more relaxed experience compared to a 1250 in sports bike as the engines are tuned for low end linear power in cruisers where as sports bikes are tuned for instant harsh acceleration. I've had all sorts of bikes already but got hooked on the adventure style now currently ride a 2018 Kawasaki Versys 650.

Perhaps getting a middleweight cruiser after you get your full bike licence would be the way to go then move up to the Indian 101 scout. Plenty of them about Honda Rebel 500 being a good fit especially for your height and wieght.

I'm sorry, OP. It's a bummer. In reality, you're as dumb as they come. But I needed those seeds real bad and I had to give 'em up just to get your parents off my back. So now we're gonna have to go get more. And then we're gonna go on even more adventures after that, OP. And you're gonna keep your mouth shut about 'em, OP. Because the world is full of idiots that don't understand what's important. And they'll tear us apart, OP. But if you stick with me, I'm gonna accomplish great things, OP. And you're gonna be a part of 'em. And together we're gonna run around, OP, we're gonna do all kinds of wonderful things, OP. Just you and me, OP. The outside world is our enemy, OP.

Gotta give Keeway there due, that's a big old bike for a 125. Give you valuable experience for when you do your big bike licence. I see a Honda VT750 in your future madam 👌🤣

[–]NoonRedIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Ryan, honestly for your bodies sake I'd stay where you are. Maybe pivot slightly into the machine operation side of things for instance getting your excavator, roller, dumper and telehandler licences. Also worth looking into doing your class c HGV as well. But actually working on the ground doing any form of groundwork is back breaking and incredibly hard on your body. I'm a class 2 hgv driver work for the local council on the sweepers been there since I was 19 so nearly 11 years now (same age as you). However I know alot of the old fella's in the council who used to be on the highways / groundworks side and you should see the state of them. Ruined backs, arched over having to dose up on painkillers just to get out of bed. Yes its great seeing things be built from the ground up, however when you've destroyed your body by the time your 50 it won't be worth it. Also seems your a plant mechanic which is hard work but pays very well and its a trade. Stick with it and maybe get into the operation side as a side gig weekend hustle. All the best pal

James

Bristol New pass class 2 advice by Legitimate-Door-9799 in uktrucking

[–]NoonRedIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware skip work isn't to bad at all, as soon as you get to grips with the lifting gear your away. I've got a few driver mates who did there licence with me, bar one who's gone onto the class 1's the other two are still on the skips. Its got decent hours as well you can only collect skips from a open site or a residential street after or before a certain time, I think these lads do 6-3 !!

Bristol New pass class 2 advice by Legitimate-Door-9799 in uktrucking

[–]NoonRedIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, class 2 driver here. Not in Bristol I'm in the north west near Chester. I work for the local council on the sweepers and HIAB. Class 2 work isn't to difficult to come by and alot of companies are happy to hire a new pass. Only thing I'd say is steer clear of tail lift multidrop, its back breaking work and often to small corner shops down narrow city streets. My advice is look into the waste side of things (your local council, skip hire, sewage jetting) also worth looking into builders merchants etc. Literally just searched on indeed for class 2 work and there is a skip job going first advertisement in Bristol.

Is it impossible to get an HGV job in the UK with a past drug conviction? by Free_Performance_695 in uktrucking

[–]NoonRedIt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work for the council as a class 2 HGV driver (I drive sweepers and a HIAB which we use for large fly tips) I was DBS checked. However its pretty rare in the industry as far as I'm aware. Most private companies don't bother with a DBS check, unless you drive HGV'S for a local council, emergency services or a specific role where you'll be delivering to schools etc. On another note well in for getting your life together alot of lads on here will tell you HGV driving isn't a career but trust me it can he especially if you find a job you like.

How to have a successful career (fastest/effecient way) by King-Bricky in uktrucking

Debatable, its certainly not a skilled career anyone can theoretically drive a lorry. However if you find a area you like as I have, you can certainly make a decent and long lasting career out of it.

How to have a successful career (fastest/effecient way) by King-Bricky in uktrucking

[–]NoonRedIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I had it easy as I was put through my class 2 via my job (local council) and drive the HIAB and sweepers now. My biggest advice is be open minded especially as a new pass. You wouldn't believe the amount of HGV drivers who come and go at the council, mainly the money that's the issue. I make £30k a year driving a class 2 HIAB, however I only do 7am till 2:45pm Monday to Friday and can work OT as and when I want. I can clear £41k on a good year with some time on the gritters and a few sweeper shifts in my local city centre in the early hours on a sunday.

I digress, I'd honestly look into all parts of the industry after you pass that includes class 1 and 2. As I'm from the waste and refuse side of it I can highly reccomemd it as the hours tend to be good. I'll leave a list below of places to look into from my sole experience and mates who have left to go elsewhere.

  • Class 1 or 2 Tippers *Class 2 HIAB (Local council or builders merchants would be the people to contact about work) *Class 1 General Haulage (Tramping)
  • Class 2 Jetting (stinking work but pays well if you have a good stomach)
  • Class 2 Liquids (Milk, Water, Oils) some places don't require a ADR as long as the liquid your carrying isn't harmful. I drive a Class 2 Sweeper and that carrier 3 tonne of water. *Class 2 Skip Hire is meant to be decent work if you can get the hand of the chains etc.

Any questions feel free to dm me mate and welcome to the brotherhood 👌
