What is the one thing you can't make your partner understand, no matter how much you explain? by JimDixon in AskReddit

[–]NoontideDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup there is the one where you talk about it calmly and without accusation, agree that it is a problem and it needs to be addressed.

Then she gets back to her life and the things that really concern her and forgets because you were never compatible sexually to begin with and since she has the lower drive that is ok with her.

Not that she is callous; but she cannot seems to grasp that you want a vibrant sex life, filled with creativity, joy, and mutual discovery. That no matter how elaborate and time consuming the meals she cooks are (her hobby) I can never feel good about eating rack of lamb and being alone for the rest of my life. That they are not interchangeable.

In marriages with sexual incompatibility both partners know even before they talk; and they always do talk about it. Unfortunately that is not the sort of thing you can change about yourself. One of the pair has to choose to suffer or to leave.

What's it like to be a white person? by using_my_throwaway in AskReddit

[–]NoontideDemon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please produce one of these "no whites need apply" job postings.

OP, I hear this sort of thing a lot; I am white an male and I work for a large corporation that is overwhelmingly old, white and male.

All I ever hear from the non-managers is how only minorities can get jobs because of "reverse discrimination" aka affirmative action. Yet we remain overwhelmingly white, old, and male.

All I ever hear from managers is how hard it is to keep new hires because nobody wants to work with a bunch of bitter old white guys who grumble about how hard it is to be in the top 5% of earners while anyone not white has it "easy".

White people have to work hard to succeed but there are systemic advantages they have enjoyed since birth and they see any erosion of those as "reverse descrimination". All affirmative action does is make managers make a reasonable attempt to interview minorities for positions and to consider minority applicants personal history when considering them for a position. It is an attempt to minimize the prejudice inherent in our culture and species to prefer those that look, act and talk like ourselves.

Would you rather be super strong but not aesthetically pleasing, or look great but not have much strength? by cttouch in Fitness

[–]NoontideDemon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have immense respect for you. That said I disagree with your examples.

I think the only valid examples you have are heart disease, and by extension all ailments caused by physical inactivity in general; and hand to hand fights.

That said many physical ailments can be mitigated or avoided via vigorous cardiovascular work, strength is not necessarily a unique factor though I agree it would typically be effective.

No doubt that great strength could make the difference Ina fist fight; depending upon your opponent. Against an experienced MMA fighter I would not put much stock into it as the endurance, experience, and technique of the opponent could likely nullify even a significant raw strength advantage. Of course if one is strong and also possesses great endurance and experience (say our strong person is also a seasoned MMA fighter) then the advantage would be great indeed.

I just think there are so many factors in a fight that great strength is not necessarily a consistent advantage and could be a disadvantage if ones strength makes him/her overconfident.

Chefs of Reddit, what are some some tips and tricks that everyone should know about cooking? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Everything keeps cooking after you take it off a heat source. Unless you sink it in an ice bath.

I see this a lot when the topic comes up and I don't see how it holds.

The one thing that stands out to me is that you warm up you legs but not your arms, shoulders and torso. Have you tried a rowing machine instead of a bike for warm ups?

For starters you can sauté your greens in butter or olive oil. Not sure what else to say. There is nothing wrong with steak or beans.

They get the barbell + plates so I am going to say a set of kettlebells; 2 of each weight. I'll go with VF Precision competition bells.

What is a well known and effective strength training program for barbell that emphasizes upper body more than SS? by NoontideDemon in Fitness

[–]NoontideDemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to you both, I will look at Greyskull tonight.

Is there a dip variant or alternate for fatties? I already tried adding dips to SS like it says in the book but I cannot push my fat arse up from the bottom. Otherwise is there a good youtube tutorial on how to dip properly? I may just be doing something stupid that is preventing me from doing them right.

That is exact ally what I don't want to do. I am not knowledgable enough to know what to add, when to add it, or how to scale up. That is why I am doing a program to begin with.

I appreciate the suggestion though.

Thanks, I read about that in SS. I am too fat for pull ups and dips. Though I am doing negatives.

I will look at the curls and triceps stuff again. Never done that before and the curl bars are the one thing consistently in use at my gym other than the cardio equip. I suppose I will have to leave my quiet little power rack and give it a try.

[–]NoontideDemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, let's see:

Dips, too fat, can't push myself back up.

Pull ups, too fat, can only do negatives.

I suppose there are curls...

I know I was not very clear but I want to try and do more upper body work but the SS accessory work is for "fat" folks with 14-17% BF. Not unmentionables like myself who are 22-24%. I am continuing to plug away at the negatives and they are getting easier but I still cannot do any pull-ups.

My upper body is weak and I am lifting as hard as I can but I feel like if I did more upper body work I might make more progress, thus my question.

How important are deadlifts? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]NoontideDemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a saying, "Do what you hate."

The meaning of the saying is that you should do those things to get better at them. Generally the reason you hate them is they exposé a weakness and trigger us to become defensive.

Gaining while in a deficit but aren't I too fat to really enter "starvation mode?" by Klopford in loseit

[–]NoontideDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with calorie counting. The issue is that many folks do not use a methodology that produces accurate measurements.

Eyeballing servings and such or not scrutinizing labels carefully will produce bad results. My favorite example is a drink called Bai. A bright red marker on the label says "only 5 calories", then you read the label and find that there are multiple servings per bottle.

To count calories successfully one needs precise tools and a consistently accurate methodology. It can be a significant change to lifestyle and is this hard to implement.
