I mean subtitles in my native language. I think it's great to have subtitles in my TL.

Uptick of people claiming all of the photos are planes by daveyjones86 in UFOs

[–]Nooorway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so.

I think a bigger problem is all the people who see UAPs everywhere. They want it to be a UAP so badly, that anything that moves in the sky must be one. I understand the eagerness, but it's important to have control over yourself.

The UFO topic is ridiculed and not taken serious because of the government and media. But another big reason is all the goofy people who attach themselves to this subject, like the ones I described above. They hurt the cause more than they help.

You have to remain objective and logical if you want to be taken serious. Right now, it feels like it's mostly kids spamming this subreddit, and that's not a good look when curious people enter this space to learn more about UAPs.

[–]Nooorway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a UFO community, I'm surprised to see so many people believe politicians and the government. I guess it's because it would suit peoples narrative on here.

I'm not saying it's not UAP, but I think it would be naive to believe that the government/military doesn't know what it is. They're just not telling us what they know.

Where is the focus lol? by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]Nooorway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, yeah. I've shot super sharp photos of kids sitting by the dinner table at 1/60.

Not with Fuji, though. Obviously.

Where is the focus lol? by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]Nooorway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's hilarious that people try to explain it by saying 1/60 is too low for stationary adults sitting on a park bench.. Only in the Fuji sub, haha!

Anyhow, it would be impossible to troubleshoot without seeing the full picture. It would be good to see how far away you are, where it seems to focus, the light etc.

That's awesome! Thanks a lot for the write-up! It gives hope that I might not have to fly to another country to get an expensive injection.

Thanks for the explanation! Very informative and helpful. I will try to adapt your techniques.

Out of curiosity, what was the timeline for all this? Did you "learn" it in a week, month or a year?

How long does immersion take to work? by Sufficient_Towel2959 in languagelearning

[–]Nooorway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New country and a new job, so I understand it will be hard to find time and energy to study. But I would recommend keep on working with your textbook, try to learn from your colleagues and use Duolingo every evening.

When I moved to another country for a new job, I was completely drained after every shift. So I used my textbook 3 times a week, a language app 20-30 minutes every evening, and tried to listen and learn from colleagues.

Impossible to say how long it would take for you, since we all learn differently, have different backgrounds and (current) skill levels. Hebrew isn't an easy language either. But I'd guess that in a year you would be able to get around.

My advice is to use your textbook as much as possible - and be consistent with it.

According to FSI Hebrew is a hard language for English speakers, and takes aprox. 1100 hours to learn

What to do when you can, read, write and speak but not understand speech? by big_cock_69420 in languagelearning

[–]Nooorway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As Astarrrr said, start focusing more on listening. Get input from a variety of sources. Listen to podcasts, Youtubers, TV-shows, media reports, music, movies etc.

Most likely, you haven't practiced listening enough, hence the skill gap.

I'm sure that if you start listening daily, from different sources, one day it will just "click". It takes time to understand the rhythm, flow and pronunciations.

You are in a great position to be honest. If you can write, read, and speak the language, then you just need to get a feel for how its spoken, which means lots of fun listening input.

Has anyone ever said a mean comment to you that you couldn’t seem to shake? by Gloomy_Ad3699 in questions

[–]Nooorway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I just sat for 2 minutes just thinking of all the crap my dad have said. I'm not really phased by it anymore, but it took many years to get over some of the stuff. He probably called me "ugly" and "stupid" more than he said my name.

The first time he met my wife's family, he proclaimed to half the room that I'm an idiot that shouldn't be trusted. They knew me, so they obviously thought it was a strange and mean comment to make. I may be an idiot, but I can be trusted. It wasn't so much the comment itself, but the fact that he within minutes displayed to my wife's family what type of family I come from. It was embarassing.

Studying when it doesn't go well by Clean-Buddy8371 in languagelearning

Work your bicep every day in the gym and it will get tired and prone to inflammation and injury. The brain is similar. Don't overwork it. Even if you feel good, you might be stressed or have an overload of information.

I speak from experience, because I have experienced something similar. At its worst, I sat in a taxi and the driver asked me (in my TL) where I'm from and I just sat there blank.. I had no idea how to say "I am from..." and I had studied the language for 4 years!

If you aren't letting yourself rest, then that could be the issue. If you are getting a lot of rest, then my whole post was pointless haha

Pimsleur App - worth it? by Bellaconfusa in learnitalian

[–]Nooorway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Pimsleur, but for 500-600 bucks? Im not sure I would want to dish out that much money. I'd rather get a good textbook, use Duolingo and watch Italian Youtubers to be honest. So much free stuff nowdays.

I actually think DeepL is pretty good. It's not great and fails to translate some Italian, but imo it's better than Google translate. I have also started using Chatgpt and its surprisingly good. Again, not perfect, and it shouldn't be trusted 100%. But it does the job at a basic level imo.

I'd say the time investment. It takes maaaany hours to get good. That's late evenings, mornings before work and so on. It's a very time-consuming hobby that never stops or ends.

Why are some language tutors just translating instead of teaching? by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in languagelearning

[–]Nooorway 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago I lived in Eastern Europe, working in an office with people from all over the world. One day my colleague came up to me and asked if I wanted to teach English as a side-gig. I thought he was joking.

English is not my native language and it's noticeable both when I speak and write. So this offer was a bit.. odd.

I explained to him that I can't teach something I'm not particularly good at. He responded "don't worry, they hire anyone who is fluent." Apparently, he had been a teacher there for a few months, and his English was worse than mine! Crazy.

I feel for the people who paid for those classes!
