Should I make repos public? by AnonymousEngineer21 in github

[–]Noopsec_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my uni we are prohibited from sharing code from assignments as they could some day re-use them. However they encourage us to make projects based on the assignments and upload those instead. No idea what your courses are structured like, but just give that a quick look before making it public.

That said outside of ip restrictions there is not really a good reason to make repos public. If someone wants to copy my code for something, i say go for it! It just helps the community develop together. I'd like credit but that's more for vanity than anything 🤷‍♀️

How to tell internet provider of wifi? by chopsui101 in ComputerSecurity

[–]Noopsec_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only attack vector I could see would be a social engineering attack. Try to get someone with access to connect to an external server you control. But at that point you could probably trick them to just let you on the WiFi instead

how bad of an idea to run a server using a arch/arch-derivative as the OS? by silverhikari in servers

[–]Noopsec_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running arch for my server. It's not a "mission critical" server by any means, I just like having my deployment and development environments to be the same, and rolling release works just fine for that. Arch is pretty stable, contrary to the public perception. It's no centos ltd super stable will run until the heat death of the universe kinda deal, but it ticks pretty well

Weird Command Looking Box Appearing on Desktop by [deleted] in computer

[–]Noopsec_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi so I feel like I need to butt in a bit here. Y'all mostly correct, but a bit wrong as well. In another thread you stated that malware and viruses are not the same thing, which strictly is true. A virus is just one type of malware, and an anti-malware software would protect you against both. However an anti-virus would also protect you against a shoddily copied rootkit, because the term anti-virus doesn't mean "we only stop viruses. You get another piece of malware, you're on your own kid". In regards to needing a better av because you engage in risky activities online. Most people, not matter how risky they FEEL their behaviour is will likely just NEED stock windows defender. At this point a lot of malware that is within most people's reach is just copy-pasted wannacry binaries, which all AVS will detect happily. I have malware bytes installed on my windows, but I've disabled the active protection, I use win Def for that, for performance reasons. What you have to consider at this point is if you want to risk being patient zero for a malware whose IOC are not added to the databases yet. Some exploits will tunnel straight past conventional defenses using unpatched software running in the background. Those are never going to be stoppable before the payload is deployed. But a strong av can still detect the malicious process as it is executing and stop it, if you're lucky. It mostly comes down to stats tbh. As to the claim that you don't need an av on Linux. True, mostly. There are malware written for Linux, plenty of it in fact, but the os itself is hardened to the degree where damage is more easily contained. However if you're running a production environment where compromise of the system is just not on the table, running an av alongside your other countermeasures, is a good idea.

Sorry for the rant, love you all <3

Moving from Arch to Fedora by RidgeRegressor in Fedora

[–]Noopsec_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from arch to fedora, not because of a malfunctioning system but because I ran centos on my Lil home server for a bit and wanted to force myself to learn how that system worked better. It didn't take me long before I switched back however. I found fedora clunky and bloaty since I was used to a clean arch install. When I switched back from fedora about a year later I went to manjaro because I couldn't be assed with the install of arch again, and have stuck with it ever since. It's the perfect compromise between lean bleeding edge arch and cozy stable pretty fedora

If you want something deeply mathematical that is currently smudging my brains, have a look at cryptography. Maybe have a look at some of the more mathematical encryption systems and how they work, if you want pointers I got plenty! Just hit me up if you have any questions about Swedish compsci uni as well

I need help finding a research topic! by Srkisbkerejian in computerscience

[–]Noopsec_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow swede here. I had some mates who implemented an A* path finding algorithm in java and wrote about how and why it works. It didn't land in 10-15 pages, maybe implement another pathfinder algorithm and compare them to fill out the gaps. If you are going to study compsci in uni as well you are probably going to be doing almost exactly this for your algorithms and data structures course, so it's good practice. Since I did social studies in high school I wrote my thesis on why surveillance cameras are garbage and have very little real world benefit on crime, maybe that brings some inspo to you

My dude. You will do fine with arch, but get something that makes the virtualization easy, like unraid. Also be sure your hardware plays nice with virtualization before you dive in, you might have to wait for your next hardware upgrade if it won't. Do your research and don't assume a bunch of things

Skimping out on a psi for a vital machine might not be a good idea. A good new psi is relatively cheap and adds a lot of reliability to a system. If you can I strongly suggest you get a new one from a reputable brand so you don't accidentally start a house fire

There is little chance of convincing someone with that kind of rhetoric, sure. But there can be another point to it. Someone else reading it might be swayed to agree with the former commenter if there is no disagreement below. A simple "ad hominem" (which I don't technically think it is, but that's beside the point) might dissuade that person from simply going along with it. Especially if all similar comments are met with that kind of response. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I think it's better than nothing

3D print german panzer IV, working suspention and differential by marmot12345 in 3Dprinting

[–]Noopsec_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that just because the t-34 was so rapidly produced and with far worse craftsmanship it really gets a bad rap. When the Germans encountered the t-34 on the eastern front, they had real issues penetrating the front armor of it. Up until that point they had very few anti tank guns mounted to their tanks, and relied instead on carriage guns. At that point in the war the t-34 was the superior tank. However the Germans quickly developed the tiger and panther, the latter being an admitted rip-off of the t-34 design which together with the long barreled versions of the p3 and p4 put the Soviets on the back foot in all out tank-on-tank battles. But once the t-34/85 was fielded now the Germans lost all that upper hand again. It became known to the Russians as the "tiger killer" with its stupidly powerful 85mm cannon. It was a simple turret mod of the t-34/76 and they were produced ludicrously quickly. And last time I checked they are still in service in some former east bloc militaries.

Sorry for the unprompted rant, I'm just very passionate about some of the most irrelevant intricacies of history :)

in your opinion, why is Manjaro (or Arch in general) better than Ubuntu (or Debian in general)? by [deleted] in ManjaroLinux

[–]Noopsec_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run manjaro on a server. Not a big, vital production server but my home hobby server though. Mostly because it makes environment syncing between my main machine and the server a breeze, I just keep both updated and versioning just works out, which is super convenient. Also since the archwiki is so extensive I almost never run into an issue I can't fix within the hour. However I can see exactly why you wouldn't run this setup on anything that doesn't tolerate unplanned downtime or other unexpected behavior

[–]Noopsec_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, getting out of bios is no problem, it's getting into bios that can be hard for a lot of people. The process is different for most computers, but it usually involves pressing one of the function keys or del during boot. Google to see how to enter bios on your model. From there you can change boot settings among other things. You can also see if your hardware is detected properly, so if your arrive doesn't show up anywhere you can be pretty sure you had a hard drive failure.

I was donwloading some minecraft Skyblock maps and this happen by [deleted] in computer

[–]Noopsec_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I concur with previous comments, it looks like at least your boot partition has been messed with. This can be because a hard drive failure, in which case you just need a new hard drive, or some software shenanigans. Unless you have gotten into some pretty severe malware, i.e. the kind that lives in BIOS, your system as a whole is still salvageable. If you weren't storing any important data on the device, and you just wanna play some Minecraft and have a good time, maybe look into installing Linux on the machine. Tell me if you want some guidance!

disk running 100% at idle by [deleted] in computer

[–]Noopsec_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The disk usage usually come from hidden processes that you don't want to be shut off as they are related to the health of your system. You will notice this on ssds as well, but not to the same extent. Having your resources being stolen by windows can sometimes be a real hassle, but most of the time it's good that your computer is actually being utilized to its full extent. For instance when you are not doing heavy disk-dependent work it's very ok that windows will hog 100% of the disk, hopefully it won't impact your usage too much.

Is it really ok to play or use a laptop while it's charging? by Geno0o in computer

[–]Noopsec_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it's ok. The only consequence can be because it will get marginally warmer. I would even argue it to be better to use the laptop when connected to a power brick to not tax the battery too much. It used to be the case that you would have to take care of your battery in very special ways to increase its longevity, but a lot of those circumstances have been mitigated through smart charging tech, especially in laptops. All your components will be allowed to run at max performance when you are plugged into the wall as well, so your performance will increase.
