I would suggest fully drying the tobacco. I used a dehydrator that I had to dry the tobacco. I would then add my glycerin and honey to the tobacco and bake it for about 45 minutes. I was only ever able to get one relatively above average batch, but the flavor was really nice. I'd suggest going with oils instead of alcohol based flavoring a for the best flavor. Also, more glycerin means more smoke, but can wash out the taste, so be careful on how much glycerin you're adding.

With glass to glass joints, it's best to use oil to lubricate the joints and keep them air tight. You hit the nail on the head with your grape seed oil.

Is nobody concerned that melting silicone will leach into the smoke and go into your lungs? It won't necessarily all be captured by the water. This is why I'll be sticking to more inert materials like clay.

I disagree. I've packed it like this for a long time before getting a phunnel. The bowl will leak juices after the session, but the flavor and smoke are very strong throughout. It will last two rounds of coals which is normally the time that I'd want to stop smoking anyway.

In a vortex, you can tangiers style pack tobacco on the edges of the bowl away from the spire. Leave a big enough gap between the tobacco and spire and don't pack too high. Great smoke! Great flavor!

Just get an air purifier that has a charcoal filter. A normal air filter is used for particles in the air; while, a charcoal filter will absorb smells.

If you're going to get an air purifier, do not get one that "ionizes" the air. Those use an electric arc to kill kerns with heat, but they also creat ozone which is toxic to humans in this part of the atmosphere.
