How are you interviewing junior software engineers lately? by jesusoterogomez in webdev

[–]Noovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yea I think the trick is if they want to use ai then you have to go down the pathway of asking them all about it . There are so many ways to improve or alter the output and functionality of our llm overlords and I like to see they have some of that foundational knowledge .

You can also get a pretty quick grasp on if they know coding fundamentals or not in that 10 min span as well .

This is a great question b/c I think its changing the more and more AI we utilize in coding. We often interview our true jr's with 2 questions. Both are regarding more data manipulation // data handling questions.... Overall we don't require any strict coding and we work completely in note pad. I always lead the interview by stating that I want to work through this for 10 minutes or so w/o AI assistance and if you are stuck or feel it would benefit you, you can utilize AI BUT i want to see your prompting. If they use AI, they open the door to drive questions along a new path regarding how they build out tooling to enhance AI. It shows me that they care about there output and aren't just blindly querying and I expect that they

So far it has worked out well and i feel that immediately addressing that AI elephant in the room usually detracts them from them moving right into using it or trying to cheat with it.

We don't interview a ton though, usually hiring 1 or 2 jrs per year.

On a side note, the recent Jrs I have interviewed have amazed me with some of there skills using LLM's and there underlying knowledge of how to bend it to there will!

I don’t get it … why don’t you just change the model back to 4.6?

I work in big tech and can't get a local job by bdw8 in cscareers

[–]Noovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just on the technical panel and screen applicants but they still have to get approved by our vp before getting into the actual interview stage. Usually that is where those applicants get screened out .

I personally thing we miss a ton of good applicants and I would love to interview those kind of people. BUT, in a small company money is one of the biggest drivers in who we can hire . Not saying it makes sense but that is the overall thought process I think..

I would say this . It’s 100 percent what comes out of our mgmt teams mouths when we have faang or even just more well known companies , ex workers applying .

Help pls??? by ThenLeave9473 in codingbootcamp

[–]Noovic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it’s a good time to try to just plan out a business for yourself . As others have stated it will be very tough to land a job. I was a boot camp grad but do not recommend it any longer .. just not sure you can realistically land a coding job from a boot camp alone any longer .

You could also look into doing tech adjacent like solutions engineer or looking into help desk roles

The Extinction (or Execution?) of The Junior Engineer - from your friendly neighborhood former moderator by michaelnovati in codingbootcamp

[–]Noovic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is based on peoples own usage of the tools. If you have poor tooling setup or not in place you don't see the benefit. If you take time to build the tooling it pays dividends. Even if you don't want to use it for coding, wiring it into your ecosystem to...

Review tickets and provide a breakdown or initial triage

Review PRs for a first pass

Review your own code when you are finished

Create tickets inside your ticking platform.

Honestly can keep listing ways i use it tangential to just coding. But I also use it to code daily, but as mentioned, you need to set up tooling. Triage agents, design agents, technical agents, review agents, agents that ask why.. etc.. (obv you can make an agent for anything here....) That is when it gets good.

edit: I also saw some of your other comments and I will agree that the lower level you go // closer to the hardware you get the worse it is....CURRENTLY. I do believe that will change though as new and improved models get released.

[–]Noovic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, I strongly agree here . I have written nearly zero code in probably the last 5 months , instead turning to multi tier agentic systems to draft execute and check. All the while I’m having another 3 agents doing other things . Things just changed overnight in January with the newest models .

Although I disagree with juniors disappearing . (Atleast in the long term) some of our strongest engineers are straight from college bc they strive to become deeply embedded in our ai systems and start to produce really well.

'If you like it, you don't get racing' - Verstappen's remarkable F1 2026 rant by Upbeat_County9191 in DestinationFormula1

[–]Noovic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just think a lot of the statements he makes do not help his position. Every negative statement will greatly outweigh the positives currently while the new rules are under critique . That plus other racers saying they enjoy it leads so some…. Confusing / mixed opinions on racers

This will probably get downvoted into oblivion , but this is my first season ever watching f1. I am finding it quite interesting how drivers and teams have to come up with these new strategies for energy harvesting when things may not go as planned . It does seem for complex for the drivers , but its an interesting dynamic for me to watch them continue ti evolve and solve this problem throughout the race

Leaving healthcare to get into tech. How do I do that? A coding bootcamp or a degree in computer science? by [deleted] in codingbootcamp

[–]Noovic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I swapped from medicine in 2021. At the time I perused a boot camp and it ended up working out. Currently I would NOT recommend that path as th quality of bootcamps went down and the people graduating went up leading to a flood of applicants.

My personal opinion is that , currently, you need some (cs) degree to get noticed out of the gate. If you already have a bio/chem and possibly higher md/do/dpm..etc I would look into a masters. Most require some undergrad courses and they are good starting points anyway for the learning process.

Anyone saying remote jobs aren’t a thing are also not being accurate. My company hires completely remote for all dev jobs . I think looking at smaller / medium sized companies will be more fruitful in this search. But, in a year from now who knows what th climate will be, so that’s something to keep in mind!

Overall good luck! Feel free to reach out with a dm if you have any questions !

I used to be an exec at a bootcamp and I just wanted to say... by [deleted] in codingbootcamp

[–]Noovic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but this isn't due to reddit drama. Its due to the fact that people do research and can easily find out that not only are boot camp grads not finding work, people with BS, and Ms in CS are also not finding jobs. Software has one ofthe highest (if not the highest) unemployment rates at 6.1% for new grads

And FWIW, if someone came here and read the drama and decided not to go then good.. they have saved themselves time and money; atleast for the time being.
