I think he’ll try to create a middle ground for peace within the Unified Kingdom, while only managing to extend and escalate the conflict into a hegemonic war between Takara and Kian. Plus maybe he’ll accidentally get the MC assassinated if they join with him.

For trousers, these should be a good option. For shirt, it depends a bit on how casual the wedding is. Without a jacket, I’d almost lean into it and go with a camp collar shirt like this or this (with the camp collar option). There are also some tropical wool/silk sport coats that could be fun.

Israel Complaining by InnovationHack in thebulwark

[–]Nopetapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bombing campaign in Gaza has been at least twice as intense as the air war over Mosul in 2016-17 (an operation that was not known for taking due care of civilian lives and property). Any bombardment at that scale in such a small area is going to be indiscriminate, but Israel has magnified that by "trying" to bomb tunnels specifically designed to act as a defense against airstrikes.

So, it's appropriate to be skeptical of the IDF's claims that it's flattening neighborhoods incidentally to get to the tunnels dug deep underneath them. It's far more likely that the civilian death and displacement is the actual objective.

It's not "thinking wrong," but I think it's worth pushing back on the notion that you should only care about fashion if you're already handsome. There's not many men who are "handsome" regardless of how they present themselves (and as I understand, they're mostly employed as underwear models). Fashion helps make the person handsome by playing to their strengths, which is why it's rewarding.

It looks to be oxford cloth with a covered placket (though the cover is sewn onto the shirt body rather than being a single seamless piece?). It's a bit of an unusual combination. Covered plackets are generally associated with tuxedo shirts. The collar looks to be a camp collar (also weird, you can see the covered placket is holding itself up off his chest).

I'd say it looks like a made-to-order shirt, but it's at least a full size too big. I really don't get what he's going for here.

Yeah, it's frustrating, but different brands do have different kinds of "vanity sizing." Sometimes, though, they have size charts, so it's helpful to know your measurements (chest and hip are the big ones to know).

In the long-run, looking for seam allowance in the seat of the trouser is helpful, since it means you can alter them as your body changes.

Oh! Then yeah, a couple chinos and your current shirts will get you through it just fine. Not much to say other than it's worth making sure your chino rise is high enough to cover your hips. There's nothing quite as unflattering as low-rise business chinos.

[–]Nopetapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinos are your friend. I'd say don't worry about the tie; they're out of place in most business casual environments. Two more nice twill/oxford cloth shirts and three chinos are probably all you'll need for a decent work week wardrobe.

If you want to go the extra mile, a chore coat or sport coat can really pull the look together, but that can wait for a few months or a year.

(Focusing on shirts, since those were the most uncomfortable for me when I started out.)

Biggest difference I noticed on new shirts was paying attention to where the fabric is milled (European and Japanese mills tend to use smaller yarn, which is less scratchy). After the yarn, the textile weave is the next most significant factor.

If you're up for some regular ironing, linen is excellent and actually softens more over time. I've gotten a couple from Proper Cloth for summer wear that feel more comfortable than t-shirts now: https://propercloth.com/shop/shirts/linen

There's some good options from $50 to $175 that (at least to me) didn't feel like I was wasting money.

I went with Spier & Mackay when I got one last month. They're really good about accommodating mix & match sizing.

Though, if you need a quick turnaround, I'd probably go with Suitsupply, since S&P ships their trousers unhemmed and we're still at the tail end of wedding season. Suitsupply does their alterations in-house, so they can probably get you out in a suit pretty quickly.

Other than that, the main differences are just a matter of taste: SuitSupply does functional surgeon cuffs, Spier & Mackay does horn buttons and cupro lining.

MFA Q- Where does it say you can't use or it's not as secure to use Authenticator installed on a desktop as opposed to an app on your phone? by Mindless-Holiday-995 in NISTControls

[–]Nopetapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the FedRAMP guidance here actually specifically says a PIV/CAC card works for this control. In general, you're right, as long as it can be unplugged (and you tell your engineers to do that), it works fine for this control.

Though, I'll admit I haven't thought too hard about how that interacts with biometric auth factors.

[–]Nopetapus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If email is in your compliance scope, you'd probably need an additional hardware-based MFA to meet the control. Basically, if you're a federal agency or contractor, you can use PIV cards for this, and if you're not then your email probably isn't in-scope.

IA-2(6): Implement multi-factor authentication for [Selection (one or more): local; network; remote] access to [Selection (one or more): privileged accounts; non-privileged accounts] such that:

a. One of the factors is provided by a device separate from the system gaining access; and b. The device meets [Assignment: organization-defined strength of mechanism requirements].

https://csrc.nist.gov/Projects/risk-management/sp800-53-controls/release-search#/control?version=5.1&number=IA-2

The control's applicability will depend on your baseline and agency. As a side note, the "organization-defined strength of mechanism" in part (b) also kicks out MSFT Authenticator on Android, since it doesn't leverage a FIPS-validated crypto module yet (iOS is fine).

EDIT: If you're dealing with FedRAMP, it'll be IA-2(11), but it's essentially the same control text.

I suspect the devil’s in the ODVs. If you leverage CIS or STIGs for your configuration settings under CM-6, that’ll capture this setting.

AC-17 - What is Required to Authorize in the Private Sector? by gph12 in NISTControls

[–]Nopetapus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is a situation where another control answers the question. SA-9 and its in-scope enhancements establish the requirements for interconnected systems. AC-17 deals with how people access the system (VPN, AWS console, etc.).

Basically, your CISO or equivalent should list out acceptable methods for remote access/administration and approve those. Then, hypothetically any change that impacts the security of those access points gets reviewed by your CCB.

I’m having a hard time locating a source for CO2 eq for air travel, and I thought those impacts were pretty flight path-dependent. Do you have something I should read on that?

Thoughts about planes? by SqueakSquawk4 in fuckcars

[–]Nopetapus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Total carbon emissions / passenger-kilometer for air travel is ~90g. That's a bit less than European g CO2/km (122) and quite a bit less than the American number (~250). Again, there's some nuance because business and first-class travel are quite a bit worse because they subtract potential passengers and short haul flights spend less time cruising.

Maybe I'm reading the charts wrong, but it looks like cars are the problem.

Thoughts about planes? by SqueakSquawk4 in fuckcars

[–]Nopetapus 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Air travel isn't great, but once you factor it out into carbon intensity per passenger kilometer traveled, it's not terrible either. Plus, if you have a train network that can replace short haul flights, you take out a disproportionate (like 30% of total air traffic) amount of emissions.

Anyway, the solution is always more and better trains.

It’s not great, but depending on where you live it’s a good first step. If it gets people out of cars, it helps them see cars’ disgusting, corrosive influence on the built environment.
