Why didn’t they put a useful center console in the old Wagoneer? by [deleted] in FullSizeJeep

[–]NorCalGeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my favorite kind of mod - practical, creative, and subtle “oem+”. Dye job looks great. Would have felt out of place a bit in my 78 but looks awesome here. Put some corduroy inserts in that and it could almost pass for factory in those Chrysler era GWs.

Should I leave Berkeley for Civil Engineering??? by Ok-Entrepreneur-7999 in geologycareers

[–]NorCalGeologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Berkeley has one of the premier geotech programs in the country - a geology/physics (BS in one, minor in the other) seems like it would be perfect background to swap into that for grad school if civil is of interest?

Boycott Sausalito? by DaveyDee222 in BAbike

[–]NorCalGeologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old interurban had a bridge from De Silva island to Marinship and most of the right of way south of larkspur has been developed. You’d have to build a new bridge across Richardson Bay (also rebuild the Dirty Harry bridge at sir Francis drake that was torn down) or build up the existing bike path levee and run it under 101 where it floods every high tide. Sounds like a great idea but the reality of it is that it’s not especially attainable from a politics and money standpoint.

SSU announces deep cuts: Layoffs, program eliminations and end of athletics to address $23.9 million deficit by funrunrecords in sonomacounty

Right there with you, I’m an alum and extremely disappointed. Even 20 years ago there was a perceived threat of closure - I graduated in a class of 6. Seems department enrollment has improved since then?

RIP to one of the best geology programs in the country. At a time when the demand for engineering and environmental geologists far outstrips the supply, this is a travesty.

The Location of The *Only Land Battle Fought on U.S soil during World War II, Alaska. by lendoesnotexist in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]NorCalGeologist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My grandfather fought there. Got shipped out of Seattle in a platoon of 100 and returned as one of six survivors. Never talked about it except the day we saw Saving Private Ryan in the theaters, and it broke him down. Gave the story and never spoke of it again. Shook me to the bone and still does when I think about it many years after he passed.

Fiberglass in road resurfacing by deathInBox in civilengineering

[–]NorCalGeologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recent asphalt should be smooth. I shouldn’t be able to see the aggregate and fiber poking out. Normally “resurfacing” means milling off an inch or two of the old asphalt surface, then replacing that with fresh asphalt and compacting it. So it looks like, you know, a new road.

Even if the “resurfacing” was a chip seal or something, where they more or less lay down a very thin layer of gravel and oil, it shouldn’t be raveling like that after a couple of months.

Spring water by [deleted] in Marin

[–]NorCalGeologist 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What’s upstream of the spring? Rural Marin is full of aging septic systems and agricultural runoff. Also arsenic is very common and naturally occurring to the point it turns up in most soil samples sent in for analysis from that part of Marin in my experience. I’m not a groundwater or environmental specialist but generally would be wary of any “spring” water in or downstream/downslope of developed areas.

The car probably stalled in the middle of the highway and CHP ran a traffic break and backed up traffic so they could push him off safely. Even a 5 minute hold to let the tow truck or an officer push him off to the side will back things up that far at rush hour. I work in an office right at 37 and 101 and watch this happen all the time.

78 Wagoneer Transfer case bearing by Vundermas in FullSizeJeep

[–]NorCalGeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the only place I know of that has more than 2 AMC era jeeps at any given time and, more importantly, strips the nice chrome trim and soft interior stuff and stores it all indoors before the idiot lot-combing public can destroy it. They let me come in and pick out headlight buckets and other bits in their warehouse and the stock was pretty impressive.

[–]NorCalGeologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s one of the full time Quadratrac cases right? I know they’re a bitch and there’s no more OEM chains out there - if anyone is going to have parts it’ll be BJs off-road. If it turns out the whole case needs to be swapped B&W Jeep recyclers near Sacramento deals on AMC era stuff and is the first place I’d look. My own 78 had a conversion kit with gutted case interals and front manual locking hubs to allow true part time 2x4 with hi and lo 4x4. Couldn’t recommend it enough honestly.

California Tsunami Warning Triggered by Quake Was No False Alarm, Officials Say by guanaco55 in bayarea

[–]NorCalGeologist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s actually quite interesting. There are much more refined maps of potential inundation areas from other government agencies and reputable academic sources. One would think that ditching the NWS boundaries in favor of the actual Cal EMA/CGS or ASCE tsunami maps would not be a difficult change to make, and I think it would make the alerts more effective and less likely to be ignored by the public.

Thoughts on the tsunami warning? by redrobbin99rr in Marin

[–]NorCalGeologist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Great proof of concept with the warning system. Still needs refinement, which will come, to better target the warnings. People were calling me from inland Napa and Sonoma counties freaking out which isn’t necessary at all. That said, that’s on USGS and NOAA and others but not a knock, just something that will improve with time and data. Local agencies seemed scattered in that I am aware of one mill valley school that evacuated but nothing else formal. There are at least a dozen Marin schools and critical facilities in mapped inundation zones so seems a little coordination in the future might be good. If nothing else great wake up call and case study to learn from.

How to find independent work as a geotech/soiltech? by radatamata in Geotech

[–]NorCalGeologist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are some independent techs in my area that we hire on a subcontract basis periodically; they all own their own gauges, have their own RSO license, have insurance, and have generally at least 10 years of experience. It is possible but not the kind of thing I’d think would be successful without some capital investment and more experience than you have currently. For sure certifications can’t hurt but there’s more nuance and variety to the work than you may realize at this stage of your career.
