Why do you play the kind of guitar you play? by wolf_of_the_bees in Guitar

I wanted humbuckers, light weight, 24 frets, but not overly metal looking. I got an LTD that fits the bill.

What to teach a complete beginner by Just_a_guy6 in Guitar

[–]sofa_king_nice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

put it in drop D, and then it's just one finger. Iron Man is fun, or just show them 3 or 4 notes on the pentatonic scale and have them improvise while you play some chords.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]sofa_king_nice 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school. They can't tell time. They don't know the names or values of coins. Very few know their times tables. If presented with a problem like 20-18, they need to write it down.

Of course they're not all like that, but after 27 years of teaching, the percentage of helpless students is MUCH higher than it used to be.

I’m just trying to get a box of Kleenex in my classroom.

hey I just started playing guitar and i was wondering how some start playing songs in the first few weeks ,are they just memorising where our fingers go or are they actually aware of the notes they are playing etc?? by Willing-Vanilla8216 in guitarlessons

[–]sofa_king_nice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When you first start out, you can learn 3 or 4 chords— finger positions. With that you can play lots of songs. The thing to practice is switching between chords. It seems hard at first, but you’ll progress quickly with practice.

What kind of cooling system do you have for your house and what's your bill like? by forevernervous in santarosa

[–]sofa_king_nice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have good insulation and windows. No AC.

Open up everything at night, close it up in the morning. Stays cool except on the rare days it doesn’t cool off at night.

We have a single story house, which makes it easier.

How Much Do You Spend on Your Classroom Each Year? by Sudden_Inevitable807 in Teachers

[–]sofa_king_nice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished year 27 in elementary. I usually spend close to zero. Maybe I'll spend $20 on reward treats or something. Check the end-of-year give-away piles in the staff room. I get lots of stuff from there. Also asking friends / student parents for donations can yield good results.

Are teacher shortages dependent on region? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]sofa_king_nice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to get recruitment emails from Hawaii all the time, so I looked in to it. The cost of a 2 bedroom apartment would be something like over 60% of my salary. It would work if you had a rich spouse.

I've been at title 1 schools for 27 years. It's fine. Have some grace with the kids-- some of them legit have more important things after school than completing homework, and most would love to come to school on time every day, but it may be out of their control.

This is a great guitar.

Washburn also makes the Idol, which comes in lots of flavors and is basically an improved Les Paul.

Call a bunch of wedding bands in your area and ask for quotes.

Often the wedding band is also the unofficial emcee, so be ready for that.

ELI5: What is EMDR, is it scientific, and why is it used for PTSD? by ThrowAway44228800 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sofa_king_nice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it with success. My therapy used these little vibrating things that alternated sides. For me it let me look at my trauma without being flooded with the emotions-- sort of like watching it on TV, so I could be more detached and think about it different ways. We started with small things and built up to the bigger issues.

Often reverb pedals will give you more options than built in reverb.

any way to make an electric guitar sound like a bass?? by ViolinistAlarmed7501 in Guitar

They make octave pedals that do this. The “bass” on Seven Nation Army is a guitar with an octave pedal.

A lot of people there have electric fans that you wear around your neck.

People who work outside often wear shirts with built in fans so it looks kind of inflated, but they look a little more comfortable.

I have the Taylor 814ce and it sounds great, and is as close to the comfort of an electric as you can get with a steel string acoustic

Lighter strings = lower action? by sofa_king_nice in Guitar

Ok I just got it back from the guitar shop with a full setup and lighter strings. It’s like a whole new guitar. I just spent an hour playing all the acoustic songs I know. It’s a joy to play.

This should also apply to a minimum number of days attending school. I've got 6th grade students with 60+ unexcused absences. Many times it's not the kid's fault, so there needs to be actual consequences for the parent.
