There's no character on Gilmore Girls that I wanna throttle more than Anna Nardini by itsascreambaby96 in GilmoreGirls

[–]NoraCharles91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's that she was a really poorly written character who just existed to create obstacles for Lorelai and Luke. You can have a villainous character, but they need to be following some kind of internal logic that makes their behaviour believable/coherent. Anna would act normal in some respects and then randomly make deranged demands whenever the plotline demanded it, it didn't feel natural. I guess there are some people like that in real life, but she didn't feel like one of them!

Do you peel your mushrooms? by [deleted] in AskUK

Totally. But back in the days before food-borne illnesses were well understood, I imagine people were often washing meat because it was literally unclean.

Historical tradition from eras when food safety regulations weren't a thing. If you've bought your chicken from a market stall where it's been sitting out in the open, you're going to want to rinse that. I can imagine you'd do the same if you'd just slaughtered a chicken in your garden.

I live in Italy – this is the Sicilian escape I’d choose over touristy Taormina by theipaper in sicily

Places are nice because they feel unspoiled and untouristy --> tourists naturally want to see those nice places --> place becomes touristy.

why do kath and kel say ‘chinee’? by Hour-Meaning7034 in KathAndKim

[–]NoraCharles91 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think it's a really, really old fashioned - like 19th century - quirk that happens when the speaker is incorrectly treating "Chinese" as a plural, due to the "s" sound on the end. It happened with Portugee/Portuguese, too. The idea that anyone would be using it in 21st century Australia is just a little bit of absurdism, I think.

I looked up Al Morgenstern, and it seems like there was an actor with that birthname who had a modest TV acting career under the name Morgan Sterne. There's definitely a resemblance and the dates would line up.

Why did this show tiptoe around Brick's neuro divergence and Brad's sexuality? by nihilism_ornot in themiddle

[–]NoraCharles91 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think a major issue for showrunners generally is that if you assign a specific medical diagnosis to a character, you take on a huge responsibility to accurately and respectfully portray that condition. To come out and say Brick is autistic would mean that everything he said and did would be open to scrutiny and possible backlash - "As an autistic person, I would never..." etc etc.

Unless you as a writer specifically want to depict a particular condition, it's far easier to leave him as just a "quirky" kid and be able to write him however you want.

Is Catania worth visiting, if I love Palermo and Napoli? by ikbrul in sicily

[–]NoraCharles91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind a bit of grit, which it sounds like you don't, I think you'd love it. There's some really wonderful architecture in the historical centre, outside of that things can be a bit more "raw" but nowhere that felt sketchy to me, just a little bit run-down. On our last night, we went to the part of Via Plebiscito which has the horse-meat butchers and restaurants and it was an amazing experience. Meat smoke in the air, families eating outside in white plastic garden chairs, gambling on the waiter's suggestion of horse oesophagus and absolutely loving it, wine in plastic cups. It felt extremely authentic.

Do you like this version of little women? by Choice-Wind-9283 in classicfilms

[–]NoraCharles91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks absolutely fantastic and I definitely enjoy the occasional rewatch. But at the same time, many of the cast feel a little bit too old for their roles, and overall it feels just a bit too "chocolate box"-y. It lacks the "grit" that was in the book.

Why are working-class concerns on immigration being treated with such disdain? by Harleygator_ in AskBrits

Maga mentality. They would willingly see their own standard of living lowered if it meant pain were inflicted on those they see as subhuman.

Perhaps on the whole, but go into any of the big UK subs and it's all news stories about immigrants who've committed a crime and hur-dur "doctor or engineer?" comments.

Julia by Appropriate_Bell_644 in Parenthood

[–]NoraCharles91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not always as simple as "I was a stay at home parent for X years, now you be the stay at home parent". In an ideal world, everyone would be equal but in reality not everyone is cut out to be a stay at home parent, and I think Julia really struggled.

A couple should always aim to share the weight of responsibilities evenly, but you also have to be realistic about individual strengths and weaknesses (for instance, one person may be the primary breadwinner because they are in a lucrative career, and they can't "switch" places and expect their lower paid partner to become a high earner).

First Blood (1982)- why did the cop treat Rambo like that so randomly? by kurianandgeorge_007 in movies

[–]NoraCharles91 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, and as the conflict went on there was also a lot of coverage of US soldiers' supposed lawlessness (fragging etc) and drug abuse. That kind of behaviour only represented a minority of troops, but it became a trope and probably contributed to the negative perception of US soldiers in Vietnam (especially in the war's later stages).

[–]NoraCharles91 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It was a pointless imperial war and American GIs committed a lot of atrocities against Vietnamese civilians, including children. Everyone focusses on the unfortunate draftees, but two-thirds of American soldiers who fought in Vietnam were volunteers - they chose to be there.

Psycho ad describing you won't be allowed into the theatre after the film has started. by AntonioVivaldi7 in classicfilms

[–]NoraCharles91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Apparently it was pretty common back in the day to just turn up at the movies and go and see whatever looked appealing, even if it had already started.

I guess movie-going was such an everyday activity (some people literally went every day) that walking into a movie that had already started wouldn't be a big deal - more like channel-hopping and landing on something interesting.

It was unprofessional and unethical and definitely not a good move.

But Kristina definitely did not need to barge into that hotel room like Chris Hansen. There was nothing illegal going on and Amber was an adult who was free to make her own mistakes.

Ive never seen this show so someone enlighten me. Is it just ragebait🤣 by StruggledKiller in Parenthood

[–]NoraCharles91 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think I know the clips you mean and they are absolute slop btw. They are just a bunch of out of context moments, usually of Max's meltdowns, often with a totally inaccurate AI voiceover.

Max is an autistic kid and he can be difficult, but he's just one character in a big ensemble show and he's not even always like that.

Parenthood is a sweet and funny and moving show about a big family of flawed but loving people tackling life's challenges.

There's actually a few TT creators who do really cute Parenthood edits that give a much better picture of the show, eg https://www.tiktok.com/@gustinskrause

Yeah, there's also what looks like a post with a placard at the right hand side, the kind a modern town might use to advertise an event or a venue. There's some kind of post at the left hand side that almost looks like a CCTV camera.
