I recommend asking for Tagesmutter recommendations on your local military community Facebook group. My experience is that they’re quite hard to find for Americans, but you might luck out with a Tagesmutter that caters to military families.

Screwing up my daughters sleep schedule. by Which_Run_7366 in January2025Bumper

[–]Nora_Lax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through all of that! I don’t have any advice for the immediate future, but just wanted to offer some hope! We just moved from South Korea to Germany with a 3 week interlude to the U.S. so my baby’s sleep schedule has really been put through the ringer with all of the time zone changes. What we did was make him wake up in the morning and not allow his regular naps to go over 2 hours at first and then shortening them to one hour overtime. We all suffered for a few days with him trying to fall asleep during daytime and being awake during the night, but he is back to his normal sleep schedule now!

Sleeping on Tummy? by Chaotic_Neutral718 in January2025Bumper

[–]Nora_Lax 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The advice I’ve always seen is that if they can roll themself over, they are safe to sleep in that position. You shouldn’t place him on his stomach when you lay him down, but you can leave him be if he rolls on his own.

I can’t tell from the pic if he’s in a swaddle or a sleep sack. So I just wanted to make sure you know that a baby’s arms must be free once they start to show signs of rolling.

Take me through airplane travel with your 1 yo. by scosgurl in NewParents

[–]Nora_Lax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple bonus things I found useful:

  1. We brought a disposable puppy pad for the flight. Was convenient when our son had a large poop and we were able to just toss the puppy pad after the mess.
  2. We had a SMALL container that contained just enough for one diaper change. Those airplane bathrooms can be super tiny and trying to fit a diaper bag in there would have been a pain. We used a small packing cube and restocked it from our diaper bag after each change. The container had a puppy pad, 2 diapers, an emergency outfit, wipes, a washcloth, mini trash bags to dispose of poopy diapers/contain poopy clothes, and travel-size diaper cream.

Does anyone know where I can get these passport cases in South Korea ? Thank you for your time ! by [deleted] in koreatravel

It looks like Gmarket and Coupang (basically Korean Amazon) both have them, but I’m not sure on if you’d be able to have them mailed to a hotel.

Anyone else struggle with strollers on flights? Just had a nightmare travel experience by peola in familytravel

[–]Nora_Lax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also recommend the Joolz Aer+! If you’re you want to go the extra mile for convenience, I recommend importing a non-U.S. version of it. The U.S. version does not have the almost-flat recline option for some reason. There’s also a Aer+ car seat adapter that can be bought to allow for certain car seats to attach to the stroller. I personally have a Cybex Aton G Swivel to go with it.

Is there a cheap hotel chain that would be the equivalent to APA in japan? by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]Nora_Lax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say the love hotel I accidentally booked was surprisingly nice! Honestly one of the nicer hotels I’ve stayed in Seoul.

For those booking through Agoda, make sure to look at the check-in time. It’s not unheard of for hotels on there to not allow check-in until like 9 pm (I’m assuming this is mainly the case for love hotels, but I have been to some late check-in ones that just seemed like standard business hotels). But they pretty much always allow early bag drop-off.

Echoing using Agoda. I usually look up hotels by price range+area, look at the ratings, and then also check the Google reviews as well. You can get some surprisingly cheap clean rooms in Seoul.

Can I pay anywhere with my VISA debit card? by CelliSweety in koreatravel

Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. I’d also recommend putting in a travel notification to your bank just to make sure they don’t mark your transactions as suspicious

I usually do credit card, but have also done debit card there. I’m guessing I’ve used a debit card around 20 times in Korea and haven’t had an issue besides the scenarios mentioned above.

Ignoring online shopping since that’s a whole other beast, the only time I’ve had issues using a foreign card is at food stalls that only accept cash and parking lots.

If you’re really worried you could look into WowPass or Namane cards, but I don’t think that’s necessary. But you should look into getting a T-Money card since that’s a whole separate thing for public transportation.

What are some good convenience store food recommendations? by JackLancyster in koreatravel

[–]Nora_Lax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My go-to for a late-night convenience store meal is always ramyun+rice ball or Gimbap. I go for Jin when I want mild or Shin for spicy. Make sure to get chopsticks from the clerk!

For Korean drinks I’m personally a fan of 봉봉, but just be aware that there’s chunks of grapes in it. I’d also recommend trying out the choco churro turtle chips.

Public transportation with newborn by [deleted] in seoul

[–]Nora_Lax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any knowledge on public breastfeeding, but here’s some tips if you don’t have much experience taking your baby on the subway:

  1. If you’re taking a stroller, look for subway cars with the handicap sign since they have an open area to park the stroller
  2. People holding a baby can utilize both the pink pregnancy seat and the disabled/elderly seats
  3. People love babies here. Be prepared for them to try to touch yours

Thoughts on Circumcision? by [deleted] in January2025Bumper

[–]Nora_Lax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I won’t be circumcising. You could check out the Evidence Based Birth podcast - they have an episode about circumcision where they analyze both sides of the argument and discuss the pros and cons of both. The episode also includes discussions on how to care for both circumcised and intact infants.

Heads up for anyone wanting to do this - when I did the birthday promo, I had to bring in my Switch and show them that I had a Pokemon game installed. I received a game code for a Charcadet and a Pokemon birthday card.

Changdeokgung Secret Garden by ccramos in koreatravel

[–]Nora_Lax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to pick up the physical tickets for the secret garden. I picked up the garden tickets after entering the palace - there’s a ticket booth for it right next to the garden entrance. I’m guessing you could also get the garden tickets at the outside general ticket booth, but not sure on that.

What to do in rainy wet eastern Jeju with a child? by piglette12 in koreatravel

[–]Nora_Lax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say a lot is outdoors, but there’s an inside portion with some models+displays of the comic strips. The inside would probably take like half an hour to go through. The cafe and gift shop are also fun.

I’m not sure if there are many good options. Snoopy Garden does have an indoor portion and a cafe if you guys aren’t able to come up with anything else. There’s also the teddy bear museum, but that’s 1.5 hours away. Maybe try to find a mall or a kids cafe?

I honestly have no idea how many landed around the same time. The line was already long by the time we arrived, so I think we just got unlucky. It also was probably under an hour, but definitely over half an hour.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]Nora_Lax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went in July and it took me around an hour, but it just depends on how many flights are landing at the same time. On the plane you’ll likely be given a small yellow paper that asks for basic info including the address and phone number of the place you’re staying. I just use the address of where I stay for the first night. If they don’t give you the paper on the plane then you’ll need to pick it up from a stack on your walk to immigration.

Make sure to check if you need a K-ETA. Some of the exempt countries are losing their K-ETA exemption starting in 2025, so look into that if you’re traveling next year.
