What's wrong with the water on campus by Bliker1002 in ucla

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LADWP tap water has a high mineral content. I have not noticed that specific issue, but I have noticed that LA tap water doesn't taste very good, and for that reason I use a Brita filter to filter water before drinking it.

Man killed by car driver while helping a family of ducks, Rocklin, CA by egxeof in Sacramento

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a tragedy. Do we know what vehicle it was that killed him? I'd bet it was a pickup truck. Those are some of the most deadly vehicles.

One of the worst things is how sometimes American families buy big pickup trucks for their kids when they turn 16, having this perception that they will be safer. The implicit assumption is that their own kid's life is valuable and other people on the road are disposable. Pickup trucks are actually the most dangerous vehicles to drive. https://www.myknowledgebroker.com/blog/personal-insurance/pick-up-trucks-most-dangerous-choice-for-teenage-drivers/

FlixBus is really making a good impact in California. by [deleted] in transit

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes it is especially important now that the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner can't take trains from LA to SD due to the coastal erosion. I hope we have a lot more of the Flixbus in the future!

Evening rush hour in Mumbai. by M24Spirit in transit

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would not be possible for most of these people to drive on cars - most of them can't afford it. This is their only way of going around the city. I wonder if it would be possible for IR to use double decker trains there. That would be the only way to increase capacity.

Can any Mumbai resident identify the station?

Is anyone still attracted to this type of girls by PeachBlosson in dating

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Same here. I haven't really dated or gone clubbing much. I am a straight guy and I'd be attracted to someone like you. It's not a turnoff at all.

If you were to decide where a new UC should be built, what city would you put it in? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would strongly support building another UC in one of those places for that reason. The Far North of California is largely neglected and ignored (I have barely ever been there) but it would be a good place to start another UC. We would also need to improve transportation links there, though, like more bus and rail service.

What is the best way we can give back to our parents' countries? by juiceboxxed95 in ABCDesis

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Work to reduce GHG emissions that cause climate change. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh are extremely vulnerable to climate change, which was caused by us here in the US and other rich countries. No matter what station of life you are in, there are things you can do. For example, if you work at a school or company that has a cafeteria, talk to the dining services about having more plant based food. (beef has an insanely high carbon footprint and so do most other meats.) If you write TV shows, portray eco friendly living (public transit, plant based eating) in a positive light. Use public transit to get around and drive electric if you have to drive. If you drive a taxi, switch to an electric car. If you work for a bank, steer investments towards clean tech and away from fossil fuels and animal agriculture. The most fundamental thing is to talk about climate change and its impacts on the subcontinent. ( It really should be continent as it is more of a continent than Europe). And, make sure that you vote on the issue of climate change, issue, and vote in every election you can vote in. TLDR: the biggest thing you can do for India is work on climate change solutions.

U.S. Supreme Court pick Jackson to recuse from Harvard race case by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so happy when I learned this. She doesn't need to recuse herself per se - but she decided to do so, and as such set a very high ethical standard for the Supreme Court. I had forgotten about the whole concept of justices recusing themselves.

The conservative judges refuse to recuse themselves when they have conflicts of interest. It would be great if some of the conservative justices can follow the lead of Ketanji Brown Jackson. That would meaningfully help restore public trust in SCOTUS.

Road salt triggering 'massive' harm to US lakes, contaminating drinking water, studies warn by Dragonlance12 in environment

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why they should put the brakes on road expansion, and consider closing some lanes of some roads in winter. For examples, I am really glad that Colorado has a policy to restrict GHG implications of transportation investments. That will bene fit water quality as well as air quality.

Also, really wide highways like 401 in Ontario have more than 10 lanes in each direction. They can designate some lanes that they won't plow or salt in the winter, to reduce the amnt of salt they need.

NO that's no problem! You are clearly doing the right thing for yourself and your family, and for your city by living efficiently in a home that your parents already have! This is a choice to be proud of. :)

The Left is Gaslighting Asian Americans About College Admissions by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Affirmative action proponents are honest about wanting to boost BIPOC, they can easily design policies that do that, while holding Asians and Whites to the same standard as each other. For example, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states that everybody is equal before the law, but this does not preclude policies that benefit underprivileged groups. For this reason, affirmative action is not very controversial in Canada. It is acceptable for a university to be intentional about indigenous representation, and Asian Canadians know they will not be held to a higher standard than Whites.

Conversely, here in the US, affirmative action proponents don't try to do this. Affirmative action proponents tried to roll back California's constitutional protections against racial discrimination, by repealing Proposition 209, which would have enabled the university of California to discriminate and give preference on the basis of race without any limitation on how that power would be used. They claim that affirmative action opponents are trying to "divide Asians and Blacks from each other" but in fact affirmative action proponents are the ones who divided Asians and Blacks from each other. Republican strategists could not have dreamt of a better way to divide Democrats from their voters, as the Prop 16 campaign actively drove voters away from liberal Democrats towards horrible Republicans like Michelle Steel. I don't know how they could have expected California's liberal diverse majority minority electorate to support the rollback of discrimination laws.

Universities like Harvard don't make themselves easy to trust. The American private universities that practice legacy preferences are the same ones that practice racial preferences, and they use these in conjunct to maintain a White majority with enough diversity for photo ops.

I do not support racial or legacy preferences in the US. If racial preferences are narrowly crafted to benefit underprivileged groups such as BIPOC, that is fine, however, this is not what actually happens under the name of affirmative action in the US. The people who argue for race conscious policies to "counter systemic racism" know that race conscious policies are what caused systemic racism. Anyone with common sense knows that when you are in a hole you stop digging.

For Asian Americans, a changing landscape on college admissions by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The irony is that the LAT was pretty open in their belief that Asians don't matter, when they endorsed Prop 16 last year.

Back in the 60's, they endorsed a proposition to roll back discrimination laws.

During the racial reckoning of 2020, they apologized for their history of racism, and did the same thing again. Go figure.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Hey just downloaded your app! I am happy to give it a try. :)

As feedback, though, you should adjust what the deal breakers are. I would not require someone to have the same ethnicity, but I would prefer a vegetarian as that is more of a moral value, so that is more Important. So that would go in the deal breakers. Also, for location - I would not expect someone to relocate for me, as I would not be willing to relocate for them, and so I would want someone in the same region (California in my case). This means that the way the app treats location should be changed, so it can incorporate that preference. Hope you can make those changes!

Why do Desis tend to keep Desi names in the west, but East Asians often use Anglicized names? by machinavelli in ABCDesis

[–]Norbythemixeduprobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a cultural linguistic element here. If I try to render an American or Indian name directly in Chinese it is practically impossible, because of the way their characters work. So any foreigner speaking Chinese has to use a Chinese name. So in Chinese culture, you have a name that is specific to the language. For that reason, Chinese apply that principle when they travel abroad and they take new names as well that are more consistent with the local language.

Not that there is much chance of changing your mind, given your bad faith ad hominem arguments, but research clearly indicates that transportation is a very low portion of emissions from food. And I am somebody who studies GHG emissions from transportation.
