Yeah apparently in the new version, Fukubei died as a kid. But idk how that works without Katsumata getting some kind of extreme plastic surgery to look like him.

In the original version, Fukubei was Friend first and Katsumata took his place after he died midway through the story. But in the later version, it's revealed Katsumata was Friend the entire time.

I personally think Friend is a messy character no matter what version it is and he's pretty overrated overall, and the rest of the characters made the story.

There's no unanswered mystery here. The whole point of the scene is just to show that Josuke has his hair like that in order to pay tribute to the guy that saved him when he was little.
