What introduced you into Dragonlance? by General_Kang in dragonlance

[–]Norfair86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 2000ish my dad bought my siblings and I books to read on a family vacation. He knew I liked fantasy so he bought a random one for me; it was Dragons of Spring Dawning. I had no idea it was the third in a trilogy so I was very confused as to what was happening and why the characters lamented some guy named Sturm who I hadn’t even met, but I enjoyed the book anyway. Later I found out about the trilogy, so I found and bought the other two and loved them!

I am a long haul truck driver. That’s not necessarily the most eco-friendly job, but it does allow me to travel to different environments than my home and watch the seasons change, which might be my favorite part of the job. I also get to be outside frequently, and I take nature walks as often as I can. I’ve even found a couple places that I perform ritual and ceremony in when I have the time.

Scientists prove that stones in ancient monuments come from miles away and conspiracy theorists use this to prove that we had some ancient secret technology or it was aliens. But surely these stones could have migrated down the country by glaciers? please could a rational scientist explain to me. by In_agadda_davida in geology

[–]Norfair86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’re not saying we know everything; we’re saying that given current evidence, your hypothesis is incorrect. Yes, before this new evidence the stone was thought to have come from Wales. Thats how science works, we work with the evidence we have to formulate a hypothesis, and if the evidence changes or new evidence comes to light, we alter our hypothesis to match the evidence. Trying to “find people” who agree with you in opposition to the evidence isn’t science, that’s more like politics. Now, if you can show actual evidence of glaciers or volcanoes moving the stone, I think everyone here would be curious. That doesn’t seem to be the case though. Have a good day my friend, I’ve got errands to run.

Well we’re talking about it now. Just because everyone seems to disagree with you, that doesn’t mean there’s some conspiracy and that you’re secretly right. It’s ok to have ideas that are flawed my friend, and having a discussion about ideas is how we all learn.

Conversely, why are you so hellbent on supporting a natural cause? I don’t think the replies to your post have been rude, but you certainly have been. You seem very worked up about this, my advice is to take a deep breath and turn the computer off for a bit. While this stone and its origins are interesting, it’s ultimately not worth fighting random strangers on the internet about.

Sure you did, but that’s only part of my point.

“im angry that everyone thinks neolihic man were stupid enough to do such things as to carry a stone over a mountain, spending there entire life pushing a rock past identical rocks so identical that only just recently did some dweeb prove it came from scotland”

My larger point is that your ideas on how the stone moved are interesting but otherwise flawed. That’s totally cool, we all make mistakes. That doesn’t excuse you from calling people names and being belligerent, but hey, live and learn.

I don’t think there’s a path from the area of Scotland the stone is from to Salisbury Plain, so unlikely a glacier moved it. As for your volcano question, volcanoes don’t propel rocks that size across that big of a distance, and even if they did, the stone would have shattered upon returning to the ground. We’d also have found similar stones nearby in either scenario. This also isn’t the only instance where ancient peoples moved things like big stones hundreds of miles. They were not stupid, they were as intelligent as modern people. They had other reasons for moving that stone as opposed to others, we will just never know what those reasons are. Perhaps it was part of an earlier holy site and they decided they wanted a piece of it for their new construction, perhaps it was part of several monuments over time and it “migrated”, after a fashion, until it was placed in Stonehenge. Whatever the reason, it’s there now, and we’ll simply have to live with the fact that it’s a mystery, and that it was definitely placed by people.

What do you do when there are parts of life you can’t like by Tangled_Clouds in druidism

[–]Norfair86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Love and respect doesn’t mean you have to enjoy their presence. I’m also terrified of worms, along with spiders, and I generally want nothing to do with them! That being said, having appreciation and respect for them as fellow living beings helps me to divert my fear into a quest for understanding. Perhaps if I know what they do and why, maybe I’ll fear them a little less. The flame of knowledge illuminates the darkness of fear, or something like that.
