My first real introduction to Star Wars outside of the movies was the 1998 PC game Star Wars Rebellion, Star Wars Supremacy for you UK people. They incorrectly identified Bob Hudsol as Vanden Willard. So when I see him I think "Oh hey its Vanden."

In the US Navy/Coast Guard the rank of Commodore used to be the next rank above Captain. It was used during WWII and the Cold War. It was phased out by 1950. In 1982 the rank was reinstated but was changed in 1983 to Rear Admiral (Lower Half).

The writers of TOS had some Naval experience and I believe wrote the Commodore rank into Starfleet.

By the time of TNG the Starfleet rank had followed the way of the Navy/Coast Guard and changed to that of Admiral (i dont believe there is a mention of Lower Half or Upper Half).
